Satree
Lex in Tokyo August 27, 2001 This is a Japanese-language flyer for Satree Lex (Iron Ladies), a Thai movie being shown in Tokyo. It is loosely based on a true story: a volleyball team that happens to be made up of gay players wins the national championship. However, they are prevented from competing internationally, because, being gay, they might make the country look bad. |

Tuk-tuk
windscreen August 20, 2001 Drivers sometimes fill up their windscreens with lots of stickers. On this tuk-tuk we see registration and insurance stickers, a sticker honoring the HM The King, a Liverpool football sticker, several association stickers, and of course a bent license plate. Also this week: Large-scale portraits celebrating HM The Queen's Birthday |

Blast
from my past - The L.A. Riots August 13, 2001 It is 1992 and the LA riots are raging. This is the intersection of Beverly and La Cienega heading east. It looked like Atlanta burning in Gone with the Wind. Even now, all our riots/civil disturbances are connected with race. The next week I would be back in Bangkok just in time for the democracy protests--another complicated affair which ended in burning and shooting. |

No
escape from advertising August 6, 2001 This ad is put on your car's windshield when purchasing gas at Esso: "We are now filling your tank with 95 octane gas. Please turn off your engine. If you purchase 400 baht or more, you get a free Mah-mah (a type of instant noodle)." |
