This week's photo
The Elephant Tower
July 30, 2001

On the corner of Phahonyothin and Ratchadapeisek Roads is the Elephant Tower. It's a condo-commercial highrise that is emblematic of the hyper development that went on during the 1990's. Yes, that's the elephant's eye, ear, and tusk on the right-hand side. As an architect's son, my mind spins every time I see it. The Elephant Tower has its own website here and the Bangkok Highrises page has background info on its design. Another type of elephant building, the Erawan Shrine, can be seen here.
Dispatch from Paris - The Catacombs
July 23, 2001
This has nothing to do with Bangkok, but I've been wanting to use this photo I took last year in the catacombs of Paris. The catacombs contain the bones of six million Parisians that were dug up from cemeteries and stored underground in the late-18th century to make room for development. CNN had an interesting article on the reopening of the catacombs last week after renovations. "Some 300 km (190 miles) of passageways..." create "a network of tunnels twice as long as those of the Paris underground metro system." And you can get lost. Philibert Aspairt decided to "explore the tunnels alone during the French Revolution. His skeleton was found 11 years later." We'll all end up like this someday... and how long will it be before they dig up our bones to make way for development?
Mars over Bangkok
July 16, 2001
On June 23, 2001, Mars made its closest pass to the Earth in 5,000 to 100,000 years (depending on what source you refer to). Even in the light-polluted Bangkok night, it was brighter than any star. Here is a three minute exposure of Mars in the foot of the constellation Ophiuchus at about 10:30pm. See 2bangkok.com for a mention of an unintentionally humorous article about viewing Mars.
Police sign sponsored by Coca-Cola
July 9, 2001
I love the sponsored police station signs. Here's the Chai Mongkon mini police station in Songkhla with a sign sponsored by Coca-Cola. The ad part reads in Thai "We love," then in English, "enjoy Coca-Cola," and then in Thai "and forever."
Pet monkey
July 2, 2001
On a small side street in Songkhla is a mom-and-pop shop with a caged monkey.
