Bond Street Highrises at Muang Thong Thani
April 30, 2001
North of Bangkok is the "model" city Muang Thong Thani. These towers have always reminded me of some unfulfilled city master plan by Frank Lloyd Wright. MTT was an attempt to create housing for 150,000, but inexplicably it has narrow, 2-lane streets, no streetlights or streetsigns, and minimal parking. It rode the boom and bust cycle of Thailand during the 1990s. Now, the whole place is a bit overgrown with whole areas deserted and several towers unfinished. Quite a few people do live here, however, and with good transportation links to the city and ultra-cheap rents, it does have its charms.
Dispatch from Japan II - Hi-Tech Toilet Seats
April 23, 2001
One more glimpse of Japan before I return to Thailand: the famed electronic toilet seats. They have features such as temperature control (for warming the seat) and an automatic bidet-like sprayer that pivots out when the toilet is flushed (quite a surprise if you don't know about it first).
Dispatch from Japan - "Mmmm... 100-dollar melon"
April 16, 2001
Here's a pair of Japanese melons lovingly packed in a wooden box for sale in the Shibuya district of Tokyo. Yes, that's 25,000 Yen or about $206 US ($1=121 Yen as of April 13, 2001). I didn't eat any on this trip, but in the past I've tried expensive Japanese melons and believe it or not, they're worth it! They are so astonishingly delicious, it's like nothing else--not even other melons. For other interesting Japan photos see japanomatic.com.
SLS Main Hall
April 9, 2001
The school where I used to work was renovated. Here in the main hall, a Buddha image sits on a second-story platform overlooking the entire room. Below is the administrative office and to the left, on both the lower and upper levels, are classrooms.
Dog Cloud
April 2, 2001
Bangkok has some spectacular sunsets. Here is a giant dog cloud that showed up for a few minutes one recent evening. More of my Bangkok weather shots are here.
