Termite Swarms
February 26, 2001
On cool evenings in Bangkok, termites swarm around every light source. It's amazing to see the insects encircling every light source in sight. The flying termites get inside houses too. In a few minutes, their wings fall off and they wander around until they die. One way to prevent the mess is to place a bowl of water on the floor. For some reason, all the flying termites will drop into the bowl. Sometimes I turn off all my lights, but leave on a light over my aquarium. The termites drop into the water and my fish go crazy eating them.
Dispatch from Japan II - Shibuya-Ku
February 19, 2001
Ever since the completion of the huge station connecting two subway lines, a JR line, and two privately run railways, the Shibuya area is more lively than ever. It's tough to take it all in in a single visit (or photo)--the grand sweep of the frantic-looking Japanese signs, multiple video screens spewing incomprehensible images, and the throngs of Japanese women tottering on impossibly high heels.

See japanomatic.com for more info on this interesting area.
Dispatch from Japan - Cool Hand Dryer
February 9, 2001
I don't know how new this is, but I have never seen this kind of hand dryer before. You put your hand in and two extremely powerful bursts of air automatically start, each pressing against your hand from opposite sides. As you raise your hand slowly, the "knives" of air strip the water from your hand and it falls into a drain below. It takes about three swipes of one's hand this way to get completely dry. I also went to a restaurant that gives you a pager when you pay. You sit down and when the food is ready, they page you.
Ki Mot Dang--Delicious Ant Larvae
February 5, 2001
A dish from Esarn. Thais refer to them as ant eggs, but they are actually ant larvae (and the occasional ant) with chilies, garlic, and onions. If one can overcome the prejudice against eating insects, it's a delicious treat.
