Happy New Year from a Thai Santa
December 31, 2000
This is a wall display at the Asian Hotel at Hat Yai in southern Thailand. It shows Santa with a Thai drum holding his hands up which indicates he is dancing in a traditional Thai style.

Working on Christmas Day
December 25, 2000
One of my biggest thrills when I first came here was to realize I had worked on Christmas Day. I really was in another world... (This photo courtesy of our new Axis network camera.)
Christmas Eve
December 24, 2000
While Christmas is not really celebrated here, it happens in the same festive month as HM The King of Thailand's birthday and New Year's Eve which means lots of Christmas lights, fireworks, and people milling around. On this Christmas Eve, I'm watching the perpetual traffic on Ratchadamri Road. On the left is the seasonal beer gardens in front of the World Trade Center. In the background is the Watergate Hotel and the Bayoke II Tower.
A Taxi Ride
December 22, 2000
Here is a typical view from the passenger seat of a taxi. Stuck on the windshield on the far left are registration and proof of insurance stickers. The large black rectangular thing on the dashboard is a light that is lit when the taxi is unoccupied. To the right of that is the square air freshener. To the right of that is a small statue to honor King Rama V and underneath a sticker warning passengers to buckle-up. On the right side of the dashboard is a glass-encased buddha made of shredded money and in front of that a tiny portrait of King Rama V. Outside from left to right are: crowds on the sidewalk (they may run into the street at any moment!), the back of a tuk-tuk (increasingly rare in town), and another "meter-taxi" in the opposite lane with its unoccupied light lit.
Election Posters
December 19, 2000
The general election in January means one thing--election posters on every corner. Here's the view I have turning out onto Suthisarn Road. The poster on the other side of the cement telephone phone perfectly obscures the view when turning to the right.
The ISS in Bangkok
December 5, 2000 - 5:53am
The trail of light is a time-exposure photo of the International Space Station making its first appearance (courtesy of new solar panels) over Bangkok. It traveled from NNW to SE, reached a maximum height of 54 degrees, and was visible for 7 minutes. It happened to coincide with the birthday of HM The King of Thailand, a national holiday and traditionally a time when fireworks are set off. ISS evening appearances in Bangkok are much harder to see since the sky is aglow with lights.
