TA PHROM ELF

One day in February, 2000, I walked through Ta Phrom Temple in Cambodia, under a blistering noon-day sun and snapped a roll of black and white film. Unfortunately, the Czech-made film was bad and the roll turned out blurred and slightly overexposed (it wasn't my fault, really).

When I reviewed the photos, I noticed what looked like a tiny childlike figure in one of the shots. I am certain there was no one in this shot when I took it. If it is a real figure, it would be the size of a tiny infant.

Ta Phrom Elf
Low res scan optimized and sharpened (with Ulead PhotoImpact).
A blowup reveals part of the "figure" might be in the foreground, but the left arm (or wing) seems too angular. Maybe it is a sack.

The "figure" is in a path I walked down moments after taking this shot. I was trying to get a roll of photos with no people (for my angkor.com site) and I am sure there was nothing in the path as a proceeded ahead.

It might be an optical illusion composed of jumbled stones and leaves falling from a tree (?), but I think it is fun to imagine I was among magical things that day.

Scanned at 1200dpi. It looks awfully human.

Because of the frivolous nature of this (claiming something mysterious from a grainy photo), I put it here, but if you want some serious info on the Angkor Wat area and a Virtual Tour of Ta Phrom, try my Angkor site.

Update - On November 11, 2001, I was at Ta Phrom again and took some photos at the same spot. It seems the figure could be about the size of a tiny child (some of the children who hang around these sites to sell items to tourists are very small).

A reader also informs me: Regarding the elf, similar things have been seen in Sumatra and are known as Orang Pendek. The Fortean Times has been covering the story.
