"Thailand United Southern Underground" ceasefire - July 17, 2008
At noon today, starting on channel 5 (not channel 7 as The Nation claims), there was a announcement that the Thailand United Southern Underground group was calling a ceasefire in the south. There seemed to be emphasis that the King is their king and they want to remain part of Thailand. Also a warning that those who did not conform to the ceasefire would be punished.

Nation vs Bangkok Post - ThaiBlogs, July, 2008
...Regular columns and features were dropped or just didn't appear so often. People like the popular cartoonist Stephff disappeared. We started hearing rumours that staff were being dropped or were being asked for drops in pay. The Daily Xpress went from more than 48 pages to only 28 pages in last Friday's edition. Worse than that, we have started to get repeats of not only stories but also pictures that had already appeared in The Nation...

Land for a new parliament - and Temasek - translated and summarized from Krungtep Turakit; Column: Kae Roi Karn Muang; Author: Rak Montri, July 7, 2008
Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, House Speaker Chai Chidchob and other government officials embarked on a boat from Sathupradit Pier (on the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok) on July 5 to reconnoiter a land plot where a new parliament building could be built in future. The 200-rai plot belongs to the ‘State Railways of Thailand’ (SRT), with about 160-rai of the site possibly being allocated for the construction of a new parliament.
Before considering whether the plot is appropriate for the construction of a new parliament, we should examine agreements that have been reached under the bi-national negotiation process known as the Singapore-Thailand Enhanced Economic Relationship (STEER).
STEER is an ongoing negotiation process, between the Singaporean and Thai governments, with an apparent agenda of boosting Thailand’s economic development.
Among the important amendments to Thai law proposed during STEER meetings was one that would allow foreigners to gain ownership of a land plot for 99 years - in line with a policy envisaged by deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
It is widely-believed that the STEER negotiations have been deliberately engineered to ensure the granting of special landholding privileges to those foreign investors who wish to develop projects in Thailand.
There is an extremely interesting development project currently underway in Bangkok under the name of ‘Krungthep Pier’. This scheme - also known as ‘Klong Toei Complex’ - will be developed on a 2,000-rai plot of land in the vicinity of Klong Toei Pier. The project is expected to cost around 200 billion baht.
The main investor in this project is Temasek Holdings - the Singapore government’s investment arm. Temasek reportedly spent about 73 billion baht acquiring Shin Corp from the Shinawatra family back in 2006.
This is why the Krungthep Pier becomes a new choice.
If the government does not clearly explain its reasons for favoring this location for a new parliament, this issue could easily end up becoming as problematic as the dispute over the Prasart Preah Vihear Temple.

Vatana's escape - July 14, 2008
Above is a diagram from Daily News showing the escape route of politician Vatana Asavahame. Cambodia is a place where money talks and there is no repatriation treaty with Thailand, and thus it is the refuge of choice for high profile Thai fugitives. Previously Duangchalerm Yoobamrung and Chon Buri don Kamnan Poh fled to Cambodia to escape court cases.
Vatana (often spelled "Watana" or "Wattana") has held top posts in governments of the past and is part of the Asavahame clan prominent in Samut Prakarn politics. Once the leader of the Rassadorn Party, his star has fallen in recent years with election losses and continuous court cases over fraud, election irregularities, land encroachment, etc. although at present he is chief advisor of the Puea Pandin Party.
Like Chalerm Yoobamrung, Vatana also has unruly family members--his son Chonsawas was accused of assaulting a police officer at a traffic stop in 2007. His family also once had the dealership for large US-style passenger vans. One can occasionally see one of these with "Watana" on the spare tire holder on the back of the vehicle.
An earlier thread on the family is here.

Third-generation ruler - translated and summarized from Krungtep Turakit; Column: Kae Roy Karn Muang; Author: Reporter Number 10, July 7, 2008
People are now keeping a close eye on the current legal cases against members of the present coalition government led by the People Power Party (PPP) and its ‘de facto’ boss & lady boss. [deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife Khun Ying Potjaman Shinawatra.]
The judgments on these various legal cases could eventually bring some sort of finale to the numerous political conflicts that have wracked this country since the 2006 Coup. That said, the judgments could also increase the political temperature still further.
The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) is currently engaged in protests in an attempt to oust Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and his PPP-led administration from power. The PAD should now also be spending some time to consider how best to deal with Thaksin’s supporters at work in the PTV (People’s Television) Channel and the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD) political movement.
The various impending judicial verdicts against Thaksin and his allies could bring an end to this protracted political conflict. This finale has been long-awaited by Thais, who have found themselves broadly split into two opposing (pro- and anti-) camps over this issue in the past few years.
We will have to wait and see if the impending court verdicts will be sufficient to stop the political projects of Samak, the PPP and its ‘de facto’ boss and lady boss. There is now a big question arising as to who will become the third-generation political ruler of our country for the current political regime.

Communique from Norodom Sihanouk - Phnom Penh Post, July 8, 2008
I. Certain journalists are writing that the main entrance to the Preah Vihear temple faces Thailand and not Cambodia.
II. The Thais have said, say and have written and write that one of the “proofs” of Thai ownership of Preah Vihear is constituted by the fact that access to the temple is infinitely more easy from the Thai side rather than from the Cambodian side.
III. These journalists and these Thais seem to ignore the following historic facts, ones which amply prove that the mountain and the temple of Preah Vihear are 100% Cambodian and belong 100% to Cambodia...

Quest for the Paknam Steam Train - ThaiBlogs, April 10, 2008
BTW, the local authority in Samut Prakan are keen on buying the Paknam steam train from the sugar cane factory in Uttaradit. I don't think they will be successful because I got the feeling that they are proud of their train. But the local people here are putting a committee together and hope to raise enough money to buy it. I will let you know later of their progress in this. There was already a plan in place to build a memorial to the steam train in front of Paknam Market. They cleared a building for this last year. They were going to build an imitation train. That is partly the reason I went to Uttaradit to find the Paknam Train. I thought it would be better to have the real train. There was a story about this in the local paper a few weeks back.

Insecure Internal Security - Matichon; Author: Wasit Detkunchon; July 1, 2008
I was once a police officer working for the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) of the Royal Thai Police in Southern Thailand. I have also been a member of the police department given the honor of providing protection for the Royal Family.
I wish to comment on the June 20 attack in which 4 ‘State Railways of Thailand’ officials were killed on board a Sungai Golok to Nakorn Sri Thammarat train. I believe the militant attackers were aiming to discredit the Region 4 Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) unit responsible for overseeing transport security, since I note that they had disguised themselves as military officers. I would like to ask the Prime Minister - who is also the chairman of a committee that oversees ISOC - whether he believes ISOC policy is being sufficiently well-executed to provide adequate security for the locals and state officials who live and work in the restive South.

Hunt for a hero - the return of Gen. Saprang - secret meeting between Chamlong and Gen. Sonthi - Gen. Pathompong’s secret mission - translated and summarized from Matichon Weekly; Column: Special Report; Author: Paruehad Assadong, June 27, 2008
General Saprang Kalayanamitr has been called a hero for his role in the 2006 Coup d’état. Gen. Saprang has now surprised many people by secretively lending his support to the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD). He is also said to be providing the PAD with information about recent developments in the military. He is currently working behind the PAD scenes, whilst biding his time until his retirement this September - when it is said that we may get to witness him undertaking further heroic acts. He is even said to have commented that the PAD had gathered together a lot of “good people”.
In a similar manner to Gen. Saprang, General Pathompong Kaysornsuk is also said to be providing support to the PAD. Gen. Pathompong recently rescued Sunai Manomai-udom from police arrest. Sunai is a former Director of the Department of Special Investigations (DSI) in the Royal Thai Police. He is additionally an arch-enemy of deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Sunai once tried to expose an alleged illegal shareholding scheme in Thaksin’s SC Asset Company. Gen. Pathompong is also said to be urging the Thai military and the leadership of the PAD to remain vigilant in the face of possible threats to Thai sovereignty that might result from the current political turmoil over Khao Preah Vihear.
The recent return of the PAD to political prominence has been quite remarkable, as it is obviously receiving the secretive support of many in the military. Even General Sonthi Boonyaratglin is said to have agreed to assist the PAD. This support is hardly that surprising, since there are military factions that clearly share the PAD’s objective to eradicate the ‘Thaksin Regime’.
[A 2007 entry in the following forum says that Gen. Pathompong was then the chairman of an NLA sub-committee on SBIA that supposedly found irregularities in the King Power contract. ]

But everything the board has done has been right and proper. We are going to change the agency for the better. We have the price-reduction policy on pharmaceutical products, which could strengthen the organisation's position in the competitive market.

Pro-Thaksin groups prepare to confront their PAD allies - The Nation, July 3, 2008
...Last Saturday from early morning, two programme hosts urged listeners to leave home and gather at the rally in front of PAD-leader Charoen's gold shop and also at his house on Baan Huay Market Road.
Some phone-in callers who wanted to join the rally but lived far away were told they would be provided transport in pickups.
The station is apparently free from watchdog agencies, so it was no surprise to hear one caller say - without realising she was on air - she was on her way to the rally with two pistols. If some bullets were directed at the PAD supporters, she said, no one would be arrested, because: "No one will know who did it..."
