I always enjoy reading Chuwit Kamolvisit's billboard around town.

Can someone remind me of his political status since he fell out with Banharn, is he banned from politics or just a lose canon?

In other words will be be eligible as a candidate for Bangkok Governor in September?

How would you like Bangkok to develop over the next four years: as a city of cultural tourism, a city with a good quality of life, a city without vice, or kept just the way it is?

Here are the positions of possible candidates to succeed Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin after his term ends in the next few months.

Chuwit Kamolvisit, former deputy Chart Thai Party leader, was the first to announce he would contest the election. This is Chuwit's second attempt for the post - and he is confident. He believes he is the only one who really challenged Apirak last time around and though Bangkok voters chose Apirak then, he deserves his chance now. Other candidates should wait another four years, Chuwit says.

People might be surprised to learn that the former massage-parlour tycoon proposes to turn Bangkok into a city of cultural tourism - though he has not expanded on exactly how he will achieve this.

Since night-time entertainment venues are common in cities famous for their tourism, he has no plans to crack down on these businesses, but he will halt new construction projects such as roads or bridges to cut expenses.

Former Democrat MP Kriengsak Charoenwongsak has also announced he's in the running. After quitting the party last year, he has decided to run on his own to be free of the party's interference.

Kriengsak says besides his ties to his hometown, he wants to use the knowledge and ability to help the underprivileged gained from joining a group doing social work in Bangkok and the Northeast. His plan is to turn Bangkok into a city with a good quality of life; a more caring, sharing city.

Kriengsak says he will be a dedicated governor who will work for all Bangkok residents, not just certain groups. He also has support from various sectors in the city to help him.

Television personality ML Nattakorn Devakula or "Khun Pleum" is another candidate for the governorship. He plans to crack down on night-life areas, especially where prostitution takes place - and wants to improve the manners of bus drivers.

With the dream of becoming a politician, Nattakorn says the coming election could be a good start for him. However, he will pull out if high-profile figures like Purachai Piumsombun, Somkid Jatusripitak or Banthoon Lamsam contest the election.

The Democrat Party's executive has not yet decided on a candidate for governor election, but Panich Vikitsreth, a former deputy to Apirak, is likely to get the party's backing.

Panich resigned as Apirak's deputy last month, saying he wanted to dedicate his time to help party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva. However, he said he was ready to represent the party in the upcoming election.

Apirak to announce on second term

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin will soon announce he will run for a second term, a city administration source says.


The Democrat Party deputy leader has reportedly been given the green light from the organisation to contest the position. His terms ends in late August.


The opposition party considered Apirak's future because he was included in an Assets Examination Commission investigation over his role in a controversial purchase Austrian-made fire vehicles for Bt6.7 billion.


The AEC is yet to decide if Apirak will be charged. The source says the party needed to make a decision over Apirak's position before it became too late to register as a candidate.


The source adds the party believes there is no better candidate than Apirak and says his popularity among Bangkok voters is high. He can maintain the party's image in the capital.

Apirak for reelection as Bangkok Governor

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin has notified the Democrat Party that he will seek a reelection bid in August, party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said.

"In my personal opinion, the Democrat Party will definitely endorse Apirak's candidacy," he said.

The Democrats will finalise the decision on the gubernatorial race after they elect a new executive board on July 15, he [Abhisit] said.

The party will also wait for the final ruling by the National Counter Corruption Commission, expected on July 9, whether to indict Apirak relating to the fire trucks scandal, he added.

Bangkok gubernatorial race tentatively sets for October 5


The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration on Friday proposed October 5 as the balloting day for the race for the position of Bangkok governor.

Incumbent Governor Apirak Kosayodhin is scheduled to complete his term on August 29. Under the election law, the gubernatorial race must take place within 45 days upon the completion of the four-year term.

Apirak has indicated his intentions to seek a second term.

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said Friday that he would stay in office until he completes his term on October 12.

He said he would not leave office before completing his term even if the Democrat decides to run him in the next Bangkok governor election.

Bangkok Governor says he is ready to run for another term

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayothin revealed that tomorrow a meeting of the Democrat Party's executives will determine the candidates to run for the next Bangkok governor post. The meeting, to be presided over by Mr. Banyat Bantadtan (บัญญัติ บรรทัดฐาน), will also be attended by Mr. Apirak. The matter is expected to be concluded by early August. Mr. Apirak said that he did not know whether his party's leader had proposed his name, but assured that personally he is ready for another term.

Meanwhile, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Bangkok Anant Siripasraporn (อนันต์ ศิริภัสราภรณ์) affirmed that the city's administration is ready to hold elections on October 5th. Over 50 district offices are already preparing to actively publicize the election.

Democrat Party to send Mr Apirak to run for BKK Governor next term

The Democrat Party earlier held a meeting today (July, 29th) between a committee responsible for the selection of the party’s Bangkok governor candidate. The meeting was presided over by Banyat Bantadtan (บัญญัติ บรรทัดฐาน). Mr Banyat said the party will not propose any one except for Mr Apirak Kosayodhin to run for the Bangkok governor post.

As for the fire truck and boat scandal which involves Mr Apirak, Mr Banyat said that the case’s investigation by the Assets Examination Committee (AEC) does not indicate that Mr Apirak is guilty of the charges.

At the same time, Mr Apirak will be proposed to the party leader and the secretary-general of the Democrat party before a meeting on August 1st to authorize and officially appoint him as a governor candidate.

The Democrat Party executive board Friday voted unanimously to filed Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin in the next gubernatorial race.

Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said the board saw that Apirak had outstanding achievements as Bangkok governor during his four-year term so the party decided to run him again in the upcoming election.

The party also saw that the Assets Examination Committee did state that Apirak took part in the corruption in the fire vehicles procurement but the AEC's report simply stated that Apirak was accused of being involved.
