Okay. Here are some translated quotes of the infamous speech of Miss Duranee last week at anti-PAD rally.

She was arrested on lese-majeste charges tuesday. And today an arrest warrant was issued against Sondhi, PAD’s leaders, because -apparently- he quoted some parts or her speech.

An audio file (MP3) is available at this address (not created by me). It lasts 30 minutes.

http://www.mediafire.com/?x3cq0ymxwg9

I should add that several thai forums are talking about this file, and of course the content of the speech.

I’m sorry, the translation is certainly not a shakespearean one, nor an academic one. I did my best with a thai friend, very quickly.

I invite experts to complete this work and/or to correct me.

Quote:
16 minutes
-Prem is an old ladyboy [general Prem, member of the Privy Council, thai word used without any doubt: "katoye"]

20 minutes
-PAD and Democrat Party are on the same side

21 minutes
-Before the kings in China believed in eunuch. This is why China and the kings were destroyed.

23 minutes
-the leader of the country [specific thai word for the king]… if you want to be a good leader… you have to be like in Japan or England.

28′30
-Or you want to be like Russia… the family of the king disappeared.

-Or you want to be like France… guillotine cuts the head [obvious reference to the french revolution and the deadly machine of Dr Guillotin...]

-Or you want to be like Nepal… people made revolution… the family of the king disappeared

-Since 2475 [thai year = 1932] we don’t have real democracy. Thailand can not be a real democracy because we have only one group. They want to keep the power. They don’t accept what people want.

-You don’t see us in your eyes… why we would see you in our eyes ? [meaning = why we would care about you]
So there is little doubt that Miss Daranee is in a way… toasted. ;-)

Her speech is obviously very, very strong and bold, compare to other lese-majeste cases, like for instance Jakrapob.

And now I understand better the promptness of the authorities.

CU lecturers appeals for "Da Torpedo"'s release

The Criminal Court is expected to complete its appellate review within seven days following Thursday's filling of an appeal for the temporary release of activist Darunee Chanchoengsilapakul, also known as Da Torpedo, who is facing a lese majeste charge.

Chulalongkorn University lecture Suthachai Yimprasert said he lodged the appeal as bondsman and friend of the suspect. He said he used his academic position as the bond.

On Wednesday, Suthachai tried but failed to seek the release of Da Torpedo. The court rejected the bail application on grounds of flight risk.

The academic you are refereing to is Suthachai Yimprasoed whose Alias name is "Comrade Somporn" sicne he has been in CPT after ocotber 6, 1976 Massacre ... Just like many of tyhe 2nd set of Octoberists, they have Anti-Monarchy Attitude since they always though that His majesty is the mastermind for ocotber 6, 1976 ....

This attitude have Splitted Octoberists into 2 major factions - the first ones who are not anti Monarchy and the second one - the Anti Monarchy faction

Highest Institutional Problems

Alien Thoughts

The increasing difficulty of staying on the right side of the lèse majesté laws can be seen in the travails of two of the leading cabal of the People’s Alliance for Democracy, a movement that up till now has tried to portray itself as firmly in the royalist camp.

PAD leader Sondhi Limthongkul has been issued with a warrant for his arrest, not as a result of anything he said, but for repeating the comments of Daranee Charnchoengsilpakul, better known as Da Torpedo, who had last Friday screamed an anti-PAD diatribe into a microphone for 15 minutes. She had, according to police who were able to decipher what she said, ‘affected several institutions’. She was already locked up on lèse majesté charges when Sondhi committed his alleged faux pas.

Meanwhile, Somkiat Pongpaiboon, who moonlights as a Democrat MP when not at his PAD day job (or is that the other way round?), has also been charged with lèse majesté, after allegedly denigrating teachers at a certain school by calling them ‘Khmers’. The school, inconvenienced by the never-ending PAD rally, had successfully asked the courts to restore access to the school for pupils, parents and teachers. The PAD had then unsuccessfully appealed this decision.

Now why this should goad the PAD leadership into calling people names (though they do seem easily goaded into name-calling) and why ‘Khmer’ should be chosen as a term of abuse (so much for friendly relations with neighbouring countries), I cannot explain.

But police have explained that the lèse majesté aspect arises from the fact that the school’s name was graciously bestowed by HM the King, who obviously cannot be associated with anything disrespectful. Or, apparently, Khmer.

The implications of these legal charges are rapidly becoming apparent. An investigating officer at Chanasongkhram Police Station has been suspended from duty when he was found to be listening to a tape of Da Torpedo’s speech. His claim that he needed to listen to the speech in order to file charges has been dismissed as a flimsy excuse.

Police units around the country have been warned to process all lèse majesté charges without examining the evidence. Observers, however, note that this opens immense opportunities for malicious prosecutions, since the police would be required to accept any and all allegations as prima facie evidence without further investigation.

Legal opinion is divided on the question as to whether even referring to the existence of lèse majesté cases itself constitutes lèse majesté. If it does, then the judges, court officials, prosecutors and witnesses in lèse majesté trials may find themselves charged with lèse majesté. The judicial system would rapidly grind to a halt as it became increasingly difficult to find judges who were not themselves on trial.

There are also serious problems with the decision to include disparaging comments against royally-named institutions within the remit of the lèse majesté laws. This arises partly because HM the King has generously granted so many names over the course of his reign.

Recurring problems with the CTX scanners at Bangkok International Airport, for example, have led to many passengers losing their baggage and in some cases to missing their flights altogether. Although it is widely believed that this is an ongoing consequence of the corruption scandal surrounding the purchase of the scanners, many passengers have been heard to make derogatory comments about the airport as a whole. Some have even written letters to the local newspapers on the topic.

But since the name ‘Suvarnabhumi’ was chosen for the airport by HM the King, there are now fears that such comments could be construed as cases of lèse majesté. Rumours have not been confirmed that a special ‘lèse majesté enforcement unit’ of the airport police has quietly been making arrests in the airport concourses.

Similarly there has been no confirmation that a zealously loyal official of Srinakharinwirot University has brought charges against a student there. It is alleged that after a particularly poor showing in his examinations, the student complained that (expletive adjective deleted) (expletive noun deleted) of a (expletive verb deleted)-ing university had been unfair in its grading of his performance. Since the university’s name was royally granted when it was upgraded from a College of Education decades ago, the student’s outburst may now fall foul of the lèse majesté laws.

Ultra-loyalists are campaigning for even more protection of the honour of the highest institution. There are reports that a bill is being prepared by the Ministry of the Interior to ban all card games where the Ace outranks the King. The Ministry of Commerce is seeking to ban all merchandise associated with the LA Kings of the National Hockey League, the Sacramento Kings of the NBA, and the newly formed Indian Premier League cricket teams, the Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab. And the Ministry of Culture is reviewing ways of ensuring that the late Elvis Presley is not referred to by his nickname.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also reportedly drafting an extremely delicate aide-memoire to be communicated to Hampshire County Council after the existence was brought to light of the small parish of Kings Bottomley.

Da Torpedo's bail denied

The appellate review on Thursday turned down the bail application filed by lese majesty suspect Darunee Chanchoensilapakul, also known as Da Torpedo, on grounds for risking a repeat of offence if released.

Chulalongkorn University lecturer Suthachai Yimprasert said as bail bond agent he was disappointed at the appellate outcome. He said he would consult with the defence team before deciding a next move.

Bail still denied for lèse majesté detainee after 24 days
Prachatai
16 August 2008

Outspoken anti-coup activist has been detained in prison since July 22. Two attempts have been made to post bail for her, but have failed.

Daranee Charncherngsilpakul, aka Da Torpedo, said that her close associates were seeking lawyers for her, and she had yet to see one. She wanted to be granted bail like Sondhi Limthongkul, leader of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), who was charged for the same offence for repeating her remarks, but got bail immediately. Unlike Sondhi, she said that she was arrested without a summons being issued first.

Daranee said that if she were to get bailed, she would not front the struggle for democracy anymore, because she felt hurt by the inaction of her fellow activists and the elected government only cared for its survival.

“It’s such a great pain that I am put into jail during the time of a democratically elected government,” said Daranee.

She insisted that Thai society needed to have the King as Head of state, like Japan and the UK whose monarchies are above politics. And Thai society should not allow the junta, the PAD, or anybody else to use the institution for political agitation among the public. Under a democracy, one needs to respect the rules, and it needs time for changes, she said.

She said the prison was crowded, with 82 female convicts in a 12 x 4 meters cell which normally accommodates 50. And she had difficulty in eating due to pain and swelling in a molar.

Suthachai Yimprasert, a fellow anti-coup activist, tried unsuccessfully to seek bail twice on July 23 and 25 using his own position as a lecturer of Chulalongkorn University as surety. The court denied both requests on the grounds that Daranee had committed a serious crime and would probably flee. Suthachai, however, will reportedly make another attempt.

On Aug 5, 139 people signed a public petition asking the court to release Daranee on bail, but to no avail.

Afterwards, a web-board member of www.sameskybooks.org posted an email from Amnesty International (AI) Thailand’s Director Boonthan Tansuthepweerawong responding to his inquiry that AI needed more information on the case. It needs to make sure that Daranee’s case fits the category of ‘prisoner of conscience’. If so, there would be a global campaign, but a thorough and comprehensive study of the case would need some time. AI Thailand has to forward the information to the secretariat in London as it does not sit on AI’s joint committee. It would be great if AI Thailand received the information in English to save translation time. Boonthan, however, finally said that there were certain issues that AI Thailand could not tackle, including political cases like this.

Daranee was a vociferous supporter of Thaksin, hence her alias ‘Torpedo’. She appeared on the anti-PAD stage at Sanam Luang on the night of July 18, saying ……… (Reproducing what she said can lead to another lèse majesté charge as learned by Sondhi himself). At the urging of Sondhi from the PAD stage, the Royal Army issued a ‘most urgent’ letter on July 21 to the Metropolitan Police Commander to press charges against her. She has her own website which has been suspended due to her absence.

Sondhi Limthongkul, Thaksin’s friend-turned-foe, was also charged with the same offence for repeating on the PAD stage on the night of July 20 what Daranee had said. On July 24, accompanied by about 500 PAD supporters, he reported to the police and was immediately released on bail, guaranteed by Senator Kamnoon Sitthisaman, his employee at the Manager Media Group, despite the Metropolitan Police Commander’s previous claim of ‘one standard’. Gen Pathompong Kesornsuk, Supreme Command’s Advisory Committee Chairperson, was reportedly also present at the police interrogation of Sondhi, claiming to be Sondhi’s witness. Gen Pathompong, a close aide of Privy Councillor Chairperson Gen Prem Tinasulanonda, had previously appeared on the PAD stage, claiming Gen Prem’s consent and urging his fellow soldiers to follow suit.

Nowm, Manager Daily has pointed out that UDD men jsut abandoned Ee Dah Torpido in jail sicne the attept to abil her out fro this kind of crime would eebventual push thsoe UDD men alogn with those left wing intellectuals into Prison cells ... until they have been pardoned by His Majesty ... but may have the annitional crimes attached with them .... the come of attept to change the system to republican/communist regime ... the sure shortcut to lethal injection ....

If there is no additional crime attached, the court procedure on this les majeste case would take virtually FOREVER that it could turn Ee Dah into a real prison shipwreck ...

mud-slinging and more

Reporter-turned-activist Daranee Chanchoengsilapakul came out of nowhere to make the headlines of local newspapers yesterday. Daranee, or "Da Torpedo", was arrested on charges of committing lese majeste, thanks to what she said at Sanam Luang on Friday.

Although what the 46-year-old said was not reported in the press, her words were construed as being severe enough to prompt the armed forces to ask the police to take swift action against her.

On several previous occasions Daranee was a speaker at rallies held by the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship, but her connection with the DAAD could not prevent her from being prosecuted on this occasion.

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej on Tuesday ordered swift action against her. And Nuttawut Saikua, a DAAD member and currently the government's spokesman, said that Daranee was not officially part of the DAAD, even though he admitted that she had joined DAAD rallies several times.

The meeting that Daranee appeared at was called "The Voice of the People's Stage" at which most of the speakers were those who had previously attended DAAD rallies. The DAAD's nemesis is the Council for National Security, set up after the coup of September 2006. But even after the end of the CNS era, with a return to democracy, some DAAD members - including Daranee - formed a group to attack the People's Alliance for Democracy at Sanam Luang.

But her connection with the DAAD does not guarantee that she will be saved. What she is alleged to have said has already been made public, thanks to the Internet. Besides, the PAD have also referred to what she said.

The DAAD abruptly isolated Daranee. Nutthawut Saikua, the government's spokesman and one of the core members of the DAAD, said on Tuesday that "Da Torpedo is not related to the DAAD, even though our stances are close."

The news that she was arrested dampened the mood at the rally on Tuesday, even though the event was to celebrate the first anniversary of the DAAD's rally at the residence of Prem Tinsulanonda, chairman of the Privy Council.

After the news broke of Daranee's arrest, the DAAD's celebratory gathering became somewhat subdued. Key members such as Veera Musikapoing, Weng Tojirakan and Nutthawut also failed to make an appearance at the rally, which was organised at Sanam Luang close the venue of the Voice of People's Stage.

Daranee is a Bangkokian. She used to be a reporter for Pim Thai newspaper before she was reportedly sacked for an unknown reason. She then joined Thai Sky News before the cable network was closed down. After the coup on September 19, 2006, Daranee formed a group called the "People's Council" and used harsh words to criticise her opponents.

On the night of May 31, 2007, she joined a rally with PTV at Wang Daeng intersection before marching to Manager Group to attack Manager's ASTV station. The next day, Daranee joined a PTV rally at Sanam Luang and criticised the Constitution Court judges and Prem. Her choice of words was reportedly offensive to the point where Yupa Im-deang, a flower merchandiser who was doing business nearby, could not stand by any longer. Yupa, 34, threw human faeces into Daranee's face on the night of June 5, 2007.
