I'm doubt that Panthip Forum is a particularly accurate bellweather of local public opinion, but I do think the explanation offered below is plausible:

On the day the picture was to run, Thai Rath decided other news was more important that the students' victory. It did not want to have to give up a prime spot at the top of page one for the students, as the King actually had nothing to do with their victory. So they deleted his picture from the photograph, which allowed them to place the story lower down the page.

Hyping up public sentiment in favour of the monarchy is grist for the mill for the pro-government Manager, which no doubt hoped the story would portray Thai Rath in a negative light.

Thai Rath is a favourite target, because it opposes a government run by dictators - who in turn beat the pro-royalist drum every chance they get, to lend themselves greater legitimacy.

At the Pantip webboard, one reader has started a poll, asking who will be the victor in their ongoing battle to win over public opinion, in these highly politicised times: the Manager, or Thai Rath?

Thai Rath is a mass circulation daily, Thailand's most influential newspaper (even though it is a sensationalist rag), with more than a million readers a day. But, there are some things I must say:

1. Western nations have bigger problems than Thailand. Yes a few pharmaceutical companies are angry. It's easy to imagine in Thailand that farang nations (USA+UK) are out to get them. But COME ON, GET REAL, for USA Thailand is just a vacation spot, not a political concern!

USA KNOWS it can get cooperation from Thailand at any time, no matter which gangster is running (or raping) the nation. We got Thai help in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam. USA is the biggest gangster on earth, we know how to get the other gangster's cooperation.

2. Any power vacuum will be filled, its a law of political science. Since the Royalty doesn't involve in politics, someone else will. And of course, if they get powerful, they will want it all. Only way for Royal power is all or none, current system is unstable, thus the 19 coups. All power or no power for monarchy is only stable system.

Whether I believe or not the story about the Finland Declaration, I KNOW power greedy people, and that it's only a matter of time before one is encountered.

You can blame many groups, but the fact is NOTHING will change until the system gets to a point of relative stability. Different names, same game. 19 times over again! Thai people are angry mostly because of poverty, wealth distribution, and development related issues (money), and how each successive coup sets back the trajectory. So nobody can tell me that economic growth isn't the goal...that is a cop-out.

Even nations with bad people at the top seem to prosper, because they are stable, look at China and Vietnam. Instability, even with great caring loving wise leaders, does little for a nation. Nations, like enormous buses, take lots of time to get up to speed. In the case of Brazil, its economy didn't move until now, 4 years after Lula's policies were implemented.

I think the person who wrote the original story about the Thai monarchy,and the people who,in his eyes are trying to destroy it,or bring it down,are very much in error.Most "Farang" countries have a constitutional monarchy,and have had it longer than the Thai nation.To state that "farang" are trying to bring down the Thai monarchy is just plain wrong,and libellous!!!
Most "farang that I know,indeed respect the Thai Royal Family,and it would be better if you started to look more closely to home,say at the Muslim part of Thailand,instead of casting aspertions against foreigners.It's always easy to have a go at people who can't defend themselves,isn't it!!!

The Thai national rail service is a disgrace.It is run by people who,whilst working for the gov"t(have a cushy job for life),are always on the lookout to feather their own nests!How many times has a falang tou rist gone to the main station,at Hua Lampong,to try and get a seat from the public ticket office,only to be told there is nothing left for tonight or the next night,whatever!Then to be pointed in the direction of the travel agents upstairs,who lo and behold has some spare tickets for tonight,only they are 200-600 baht more than the published price!The person who directed you upstairs,gets a little bit,and the person who sold them to you gets an extra commission.I know plenty has been said before,about Thai rail,but until the gov't actually has the guts to take on the employees of Thai rail,and let things go along as they are,then you are going to end up with a rail system,comparable to Indian National Rail.This is no 555 !!!!!!!
