Hu Kaung Wildlife Sanctuary

From frontpage Friday, January 12, 2007

World’s largest tiger reserve threatened by gold mining - The Irrawaddy, January 9, 2007
[Can we find this on GoggleEarth?]
The world’s largest tiger reserve—the Hugawng Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in far northwest Burma—is threatened by extensive gold mining operations that not only devastate the environment but lead to human right violations and social problems in isolated communities, according to the Kachin Development Networking Group...
Here is the official site of the Wildlife Conservation Society, based in NY, which has been directly responsible for managing the sanctuary:

Adding placements to forums, the GWR way!

This is the method I have been using lately. There may be other more effective or quicker ways however.

First of all, register yourself on a Google Forum: -

http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/newuser.php?Cat=0

After that log in: -

http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/login.php?Cat=0
  • Open Google Earth.
  • Find what you want to showcase
  • Click the ADD PLACEMENT icon on the toolbar.
  • A dialogue box pops up with the coordinates. You can fill in the name of the placemark and add a description. You can 'drag' the map pin to the exact location you want and then hit the OK button.
  • Click SHOW SIDEBAR from the toolbar and select the placement item you have just added. (It will probably already be selected.) Deselect any previous placemarks you don't want to add to the forum.
  • FILE/SHARE-POST will take you to the Google Earth Community posting wizard.
  • Scroll down and select two boxes that confirm that you have looked to check that you are not duplicating a placemark.
  • Click CONTINUE.
  • Select what you think is the most appropriate forum with 'radio buttons'.
  • Scroll down & Click POST MY PLACEMARK.
  • If you have been a bit slow setting things up, you may be prompted to log in again. You may even have to go back to the FILE/SHARE POST process in Google Earth again.
  • Fill in a subject.
  • Choose an icon.
  • Edit the placemark text again if you want to.
  • Make a few other small adjustments, scroll down & press continue.
  • It will then ask you if you want to view the placement you have just added.
  • If you hesitate at this point, it will eventually take you automatically to the forum where you can probably see your already added placemark near the top of the page.
  • Right click on the icon VIEW IN GOOGLE EARTH.
  • Select properties. Highlight the entire 'address' at the top and hit COPY.
  • If you want to see the placement itself, left click the VIEW IN GOOGLE EARTH icon.
  • You can then choose to OPEN WITH GOOGLE. kmz file or SAVE TO DESKTOP. (The address can also be extracted from the 'properties' of the .kmz desktop shortcut.
  • Paste in the address in this or any other forum, like so. This one is for Ban Dara Railway Junction: -

It is a bit fiddly in my opinion, and I arrived at this method by trial & error.

If you want to export a placemark to a KMZ/KML-File - simply left-click on it and choose "SaveAs". Never tried to include a file into a forum article yet however.

If you want to share that link with other, there are two possible ways - either as described post it to the google earth community, or the alternative way is to find/create the Wikipedia article for that place, and add the geographic coordinates to that one. For details see the GeoWeb FAQ.

Or if the coordinates are known, simply put them into the "Fly To" box.

Coordinates for Hu Kaung Valley are:

26 15'00"N, 95 45'00"E

Alternative spelling "Hukaung" and "Hukawng"

Does anyone have the boundary coordinates for the Sanctuary?
