today i happened to be at the MRT station, and found that the highest fare is actually S$2.80, close to 3 dollars. during the commissioning years, any train system is bound to have teething glitches. i am sure there is hardly a system that does not have these. SMRT did have its own set of glitches, although i am not sure exactly what they were. when NEL, run by SBS Transit, opened, there was a fault at one of the terminal stations, affecting opperations between the terminal and the next for around 1 hour plus. then one of their trains stalled on another day, causing system and service disruption for 6 hours. these have since been ironed out, and a year on, the system is moving very smoothly. SLRT operates the Bukit Panjang LRT. the bukit panjang LRT has seen numerous breakdowns in its years of service. this is because there were electrical faults and mechanical faults. bombardier, the company that produced the trains, has been called in to upgrade and supervise the opperations. Sengkang (and upcoming punggol) LRTs will be run by SBS Transit. Sengkang LRT, in one year of opperation, has seen only one computer breakdown where the system was disrupted for 1 hour. during the commisioning of the KL Monorail, which is a bit different from Skytrain (the train wraps around the track), a wheel fell onto somebody's head and opening was delayed by 1 year or so. but the monorail is one of malaysia's most successful attempts at easing transportation woes. the trains were built by malaysia. and all civil engineering works undertaken by malaysian companies.
