View Full Version : Future Capital:Ban Na
This subject has been talked about for many years: mainly amongst the politicians (this may also be of relevance to the current debate over location for a new parliarment house).
Bangkok is already overcroweded. It's one of the largest 'primate city' in the world (primate cities are cities that capture such a large proportion of a country's population as well as its economic activity). The city has about 8 million people, which made up approx 12% of Thailand's population. Yet the City generates over 50% of the country's revenue (GDP). The City is easily more than 20 times the size of the second largest city in Thailand, Nakhon Ratchasima. Should we try to decentralise the city before we further marginalise this 'capital' city and other regions of Thailand.
Should we shift all central government offices out of Bangkok and build a new administrative capital city like Washington DC, Canberra, New Delhi etc. Or should we create a new hi-tech capital city like Putrajaya?
Where would you like the new capital city to be located? And what name would you give to Thailand's new capital city?
I think that Thailand would need a new capital some day in the future. Bangkok is seriously overcrowded. But I don't think the new capital can be that far from the current one though.
so in my opinion, it should in a province near Bangkok like Nonthaburi, Saraburi...
The govt. should now plan ahead so that they can prepare all the infrastructure for the new capital. USA and Australia are a very good example for this case. All the government related are in one place. Go Bangkok!:)
Amidst all the megalomaniac mega-projects, what ever happened to the New City at Ban Na?
It's been quite a long time since we last read about it....... Anyone heard anything?
Well, I guess the cronies are still in the process of cutting the proverbial cake (i.e. clandestinely hoarding valuable landplots, pre-allocating lucrative orders, etc.) before the final plans are announced and construction can start.........

The whole thing has gone very quiet, but in the BKK-Korat study we are still having to look at one route that would serve the new city, even though at this point, it makes no sense whatsoever.

I'm not sure about the full concept plan but I though BMA was doing some planning framework study that was linked on their planning website (Didn't Ron post this on the frontpage one day???).
There is a thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=114082&page=2&pp=20) on part of the project, for the immediate airport area, on the skyscrapercity forum which has some renderings.

(See here (http://2bangkok.com/2bangkok/MassTransit/newcity.shtml), for example.)

aah, sorry yes. for some reason I read 'Ban Na' as Bangna and just assumed that you mean't the airport area. :o Perhaps I need to check my eyesight...
However, there must be a few of these 'megalomaniac meg-projects', very apt! :) , that seem to have fallen by the wayside. or perhaps like the Makkasan project it is all just shrouded in secrecy whilst everyone works out how to make their riches...as you more elequently suggest!

I do not know which Suwannabhumi City!
There are 2 studies by NESDB and Bureau of Land Use Planning. NESDB emphasized on the east of SBIA. They called it "Aerotropolis Project". It will be located along Sriwaree Noi Road. With commercial complex, hotels, etc.
The other one is Suwannabhumee City on the west of SBIA. It is located along Bang Na-Trad, Onnut&Lad Krabang, King Kaew and Outer Ring East Motorway.
Khun Wisarut may check any available data from internet.
Each city may attract more than 1M population which will make both cities bigger than inner Silom & Sathorn. Aeropolist posts some problems where the area has been used for fishing (TRUE.... they are fish!). and irrigation routes. It is difficult to change code "green" (agricultural) to "red" (commercial).
It is unlikely NESDB will make it, just like they once planned Shinkansen from BKK-Chonburi.
You may wonder NESDB had nothing to do with transport planning!!
The west of SBIA is in code "red" already, but the land has been mixed used (factories, warehouse, housing, golf courses, temples!!). They talked about "land use relocation" which I did not have any clue!
Both projects will require gigantic resources (I mean budgets).
What is shown in the link is, as I remembered, land development plan for commercial complex inside the airport.
There's some information on the new city project at the Department of Town and Country Planning website:
http://www.dtcp.go.th/04work/newtown/detail/title04.html
the page is written in Thai. The website says detail masterplan should be complete by 2006. I think land resumption started in 2004.

I wonder whether this project can be realised given the current financial situation. The government is already under heavy pressure to cut spending on many mega projects.
From information cited by Khun Wisarut in this thread (http://www.angkor.com/2bangkok/2bangkok/forum/showthread.php?t=1032) on the proposed High Speed Rail to Khorat:
The 2nd option is Makkasan - Chachongsao - Klong 19 - Kaeng Khoi -Khorat -> 293 km
This has dimmer perspective after the proposed new city at Banna has been canceled.
