Regarding the latest map by Dick van der Spek(http://2bangkok.com/paknam-dvds.jpg - as beautiful as his Tramway and Maeklong Railway maps, btw):

Did the Paknam Railway have 10 or 11 stations?

The overview of Bangkok Tramway Lines (http://2bangkok.com/2bangkok/Tram/routes.shtml - scroll down to line 8) mentions only 10, while the map shows 11.

Questions/remarks regarding the stations on the map:

4. Is it Ban Kruay or Kluay Nam Thai? (The latter makes more sense to me.)
5. Phra Khanong - the one not mentioned on 2bangkok.
9. Must be Sisa Jorakhe (which translates as "Crocodile's Head").

And a final question, also related to the 'Timeline of Thai Railways' list: the Paknam Railway was meter gauge, not standard gauge, right? And the tramways?

Initially, it is ONLY Ban Kruay and then the new STOp next to ban Kruay -> Kluay nam Thai (Sukhumvit 42).

Yep, it is a meter gaugeinitially run by steam locos (one is PRESERVED as the monument at the SRT HQ).

It is considred a tyram after the electrification of the track and the Belgian firm had suppled the tram cars runnign on the meter gauge track of Paknam Railway

I am confused as Kluay Nam Thai does not appear on the Map!

Khun Enforcer,

So what is the ultimate answer? Now we have 12 stations already! Compare the list given at http://2bangkok.com/2bangkok/Tram/routes.shtml:

1) Hua Lamphong
2) Saladaeng
3) Klong Toei
4) Kluay Nam Thai
5) Bang Chak
6) Bang Na
7) Samrong
8) Sisa Jorakhe
9) Bang Nang Kreng
10) Pak Nam

But apparently we have to add Ban Kruay and Phra Khanong to that? Correct or not? What does your "radio script from Public Relations Department" actually say, Khun Wisarut?

And then, you also implicated that some of them were just stops, not stations? Which ones?

Please do not misunderstand I am not blaiming anyone, I was just trying to find out what all the stations were!

What I was trying to outline was that the list of stations in 2b and those marked on the map do not tally.

So is it 10 or 12, please guys.

Why is it telling me at the bottom of the page, All times are GMT+7 hours. [Fine, that would be Bangkok time.] The time now is 05:47 AM, when in fact it is 4:47 PM??? So what is displayed is GMT-4 hours= time for the Eastern US. In other words, you have to add 11 hours if you are in Thailand. Seems to stick to the forum default settings?

Ron? Can you enlighten us? Can that be changed?

What it says now (Thai Time = 1328) is

All times are GMT +7 hours. The time now is 02:25 AM.

No, you can change the time under "user cp > edit options", but I found that all time zones are lagging 11 hours behind, for whatever reason. So, in order to get Bangkok time, you have to choose GMT-6, not GMT+7. (-13 = the same as +11 in a 24 hour system.) Now I finally got it right...... though it displays "All times are GMT-6", but the time is correct for our zone! But of course, the date is wrong (i.e. 1 day behind) whenever you cross the line back past midnight!

Now, it seems to me that you are REALLOY oput of topic ...

Well, I had recorded the names of the statiosn and stops of paknam Railway form the Radio Script from the PR Dept ... now the original script is in National Archieve ... but too bad I LOST that record so I cannot printed here.

Nevertheless, one thing I would like to tell you.

From 1893- just before 1916 -> There were 10 station alogn Paknam Railway Line.... from Niorat Rotfai (Journal about Railway)
recorded by Buddhist monk during the trip to Paknam on April 19, 1893.

However, I found that paknam railway Company Limited had to add anoither 2 stations (but 2 stops would be more appropriated) to meet the increasing demand ... and the number of station along Paknam railway has been frozen to 12 stations intil the nationalization on September 12, 1936 ....

Later on, those station along the tracks (expet both terminals at hua Lamphong and Paknam) had been downgraded to Stop (without station master - only ticket sellers) .... to cut down the expenses ....

Thanks Khun Wisarut but please .... which were the pre-1916 stations and which two were added?

The Talk about the days I was young fby Uncle Yai Naphayon (Penname).

1) Every morning (6 AM) and evening (6 PM), the old Chinese fishmonkers and Chinese coolies were carrying crams and
fish catched from Pak Nam to downtown BKK (Hua Lamphong)
by Paknam Railway. Some of thsoe street urchines (including
the author) had stolen the mackerel and crams from thsoe Chinese fishmonkers by putting their hands deep into the
bottom to the fish baskets

2) There are several stations of Paknam Railway he could remember even though he has admitted that some stations
were missing.

1) Hua Lamphong (terminal) -> Original 10
2) Saphan Sawang (stop - minor station) -
near Trok Phraya Sunthon . This station (stop)
had so many food to eat there at the price of
3-5 Satang.
3) Saphan Lueng (stop - minor station) -
opposite to tramway depot and near
Tong Kok cinema [Chinese Cinema whcih
showed Sun Yat Sen picture before Thai king]
4) Sam Yan (station) -> Now, Samyan Subway station
5) Sathan Saowapha (stop - minor station) ->
Sathan Saowapha is Thai version of Pasteur Institute
6) Saladaeng (station) -> Original 10
Now, Si Lom Subway station
7) Sathon - Witthayu (station) -> This one must become a station after 1936 ->now Lumphinee Subway Station
8) Klong Toei (station) -> Original 10
9) Kluay Nam Thai (stop - minor station) -> near Berlie Jucker Co. Ltd. (the old trading firm which has been in business since 1882 and still be in business)
10) Phra Khanong -> Orignal 10
(the station near Phra Khanong canal)
11) Bang Na -> Original 10 (near Naval Ordinance)
12) Bang Nang Kreng (AKA Bang Chakrent) - (stop - minor startion)
13) Naval Rating School (staton)
14) Mahawongse (stop - minor station) - This station seems NEVER gain the status of the major station since this one seems to be less important thant otehr station.
15) Paknam Samut Prakarn (terminal station)

Note: Uncle Yai forgot to mention Ban Kruay station which has implied that the old Ban Kruay station has become LESS important than the newer Kluay Nam Thai stop.

Furthermore, he skipped Bang Chak station, Samrong station and Chorakhe station even though Samrong station has a pier for the boat to Chachoeng Sao via Samrong canaland Chorakhe is hte place where Paknam railway and Sukhumvit road has intersected.

Note2: Naval rating school (Rongrian Chumphon Thaharn Ruea in Official Thai anme or Rongrain Jar Taharn Ruea in colloquial Thai name) is the Naval NCO school - before moving the NCO school to Kret Kaeo - near Sattahip Naval Base and transform this Rating school into Naval Academy whcih come back from Sattahip since 1952. After moving there, many collage girls from Chulalongkorn U. were riding Paknam railway to see theri boyfriends at Naval Academy.

Note 3: Uncle Yai seem to forget putting the name of Phrakhanong Witthayalai stop, Talad Klogn Toei stop, Suan Oy stop alogn Paknam railway since there stops were much less impprtant that ONLy local people aroudn Klong Toei and Phra Khanaong has noticed at all.

Is there anything left of the Paknam Railway Line today?

if so is it easy to access the railway reserve and is the track still there?

what is on the railway reserve today?

Could this line be rebuilt as an electric commuter line ?

Well cross the river near the Sheraton Orchard hotel to Klong Sarn market.
This is the former terminus of the Maeklong line (TCR).
Walk down the Thanon Charoen Rat, in the middle of that road once there was a track.
At the Wongwian Yai station you can catch a train if you want and explore the still existing parts. A real adventure is looking for the remains of the former Ban Bua Thong line, some still to be found. (treasure hunting for e.g. bridge foundations) And if you are interested in trams as well, not all the remains are gone. (rail in pavement) That’s for Bangkok, if you go beyond enough old tracks to uncover.

Ltd (the now-defunct state enterprise responsible for the sugar mills) in July 16, 1942 even though the actual paymnet had to bewaited until 1947.

Forthe case of WongwianYai - Mahachai line, they no longer stop at Rang Sakae stop and Chomthong stop due to the lackof demands ... you can see the reed covering rang Sakae stop (next to Karn Keha stop) while
Chom Thong stop (near Wat Raj Orot) has been vandalized
