View Full Version : Statistics on highrise in BKK
Is there any records of number of highrise buildings in BKK?
I'm wondering whether what area in BKK has the most higrise? Sukumvit? or Silom? or other areas?
And also would be interesting to know mumber of how many units of condo BKK has and where.
How about Emporis (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/ci/?id=100454) for a start (though their database isn't necessarily complete, but still much better than www.skyscraperpage.com)?
Another option: ask Khun Pas, he knows a lot about BKK high-rises! :)

At a guess I would say that there are TOO MANY!

At a guess I would say that there are TOO MANY!No, there can never be too many (I love skyscrapers!).... but as we all know, the planning is poor (or rather non-existing), making the city a jumbled mess. :D
anyone can have a planned generic city.
how many countries have the fine chaos of bangkok.

Well, actually most any larger third-world city qualifies for "chaos"... whether it's a fine chaos or not I'll leave up to debate.
As a fair estimate I think there are over 1200 completed buildings with 20 storeys or more...It's hard to keep track of all the highrise projects in Bangkok though.
And yes, Sukhumvit seem to have the highest concentration of them.

Here's Emporis' list of the most skyscraper-dense cities in the world:
http://www.emporis.com/en/bu/sk/st/ma/ci/
Top 3 are Hong Kong (7,422), New York (5,444) and Singapore (3,503). Bangkok comes in at #16 with 710.

You raised a good point there. It depends what one see in the midst of all these "chaos" I suppose.
The other week I went to a presentation on Transit Oriented Development in North American Cities. Portland and Vancouver were (as usual) singled out the most successful cities in terms of its transport planning and land use planning integration.
What amazed me more is the current level of highrise construction in Vancouver, especially around their 'skytrain' stations and its waterfront areas. For a city with stunningly beautiful natural scenery as Vancouver, it makes me wonder why are there so many people wanting to live in those (expensive) highrise buildings.

Bangkok's list is far from complete though :)

Because you can see the scenery better when you have a vantage point high up? That's why people pay good money to visit observation decks and why penthouses command such lofty prices. Even Jakarta, from where I'm typing this, (almost) looks pretty from the 27th floor at night :D
