Apparently Google has taken over Keyhole (http://www.keyhole.com/), the result being that anyone can now enjoy worldwide satellite data (high-res imagery restricted to the US, it seems). It's only the beta version and unfortunately has no map scale, but usability/navigation is already quite nice - simply drag and zoom (broadband connection recommended, though!) And the search function is a breeze, you can find US street addresses in a second, plus it can even give driving directions.

http://maps.google.com (Click on Satellite to switch from map view to image view.)

And something related (already mentioned on the 2B mainpage): Google sightseeing (http://www.shreddies.org/gmaps/)

Google maps may be a bit too intrusive:

http://www.defectiveyeti.com/archives/001238.htmlOh yeah, those old fears that spy satellites can identify individuals, read license plates from space, etc. (and even look inside closed buildings?) :p :p :p

(Also see this thread (http://www.angkor.com/2bangkok/2bangkok/forum/showthread.php?t=964).)

Google has recently launched a new beta online service called "Google Earth" at http://earth.google.com. (http://earth.google.com/)

You can either donwload a free version of Google Earth (http://earth.google.com/earth.html) or pay a little extra for a Google Earth Plus (http://earth.google.com/earth_plus.html) or quite a bit for a Google Earth Pro (http://earth.google.com/earth_pro.html) or even more for a Google Earh Enterprise (http://earth.google.com/earth_enterprise.html).

Coincidentally, as mentioned on 2b mainpage, MSN has just launched a new online service called "MSN Virtual Earth (http://virtualearth.msn.com/)"

I've tried Google Earth, the free one. Its user interface is way too cool. Love it!

Interestingly, on its map, it even says Krung Thep instead of Bangkok. Though it uses the same set of satellite pictures as found on Google Map.

It's actually that cool. I got motion sickness from virtually "flying" from one place to another... I'm not kidding!

Have any of you checked Google Maps in Thailand lately? It looks like Google has added street map data for all of Thailand into Google Maps. Typing the place name in English sometimes works. No luck with Thai names or addresses though.

I don't see the street names in Google Earth...but I do see them in Google Maps. (of course, in Thai) Am I doing something wrong?

I know for wikimapia...u also have the street names...u have to use hybrid or map mode. Also, the highest zoom for some reason makes the street names disappear. If you zoom out 1 step, the names reappear...a small annoyance.

Maybe this entry in the GoogleEarthBlog should answer it - http://gearthblog.com/blog/archives/2007/04/new_google_maps_russ.html. According to that one they will adopt it for GE as well, but it may take some time till it will show up there. And as that blog was from April and said approximately half a year, it may come soon now. Hope it will have more areas with hires imaging as well...

According to the Google LatLong Blog (http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2008/01/first-release-of-2008.html), the street maps known from Google Maps are now available in Google Earth as well. Sadly I am stuck with an old laptop right now which cannot run GE, so I cannot confirm it yet however.
