For about 5 yrs now I have been using the excellent OCHA (UN Office Co-ord. Humanitarian Affairs) website called reliefweb (http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/dbc.nsf/doc100?OpenForm) . Recently it had an overhaul. It is an excellent source of maps (http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/rwb.nsf/doc114?OpenForm) and data on humanitarian emergencies.
Want to get the latest on the Tsunami relief effort? See the latest info (http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/dbc.nsf/doc108?OpenForm&emid=TS-2004-000147-LKA&rc=3) or view a diverse and comprehensive range of maps on the site (http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/rwb.nsf/doc404?OpenForm&emid=TS-2004-000147-LKA&rc=3). The whole site is volumous and easy to use. You can search by country, Thailand (http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/dbc.nsf/doc104?OpenForm&rc=3&cc=tha) , or by the latest emergencies (http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/dbc.nsf/doc103?OpenForm).
Want to know about himilayan Indian avalanches (http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/dbc.nsf/doc108?OpenForm&emid=AV-2005-000028-IND&rc=3), plagues of locusts (http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/dbc.nsf/doc108?OpenForm&emid=IN-2004-000071-MRT&rc=3) in africa and the Middle East or the most severe winter (http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/dbc.nsf/doc108?OpenForm&emid=CW-2005-000019-AFG&rc=3) in Afghanistan in 10 years.
And once the media spotlight has left this is probably the best site for informing yourself on the latest relief info and rehabilition/development phase. Links to policy and critiques and many links to NGO, govt. and UN agency sites.
A useful resource to get some insight into the real info behind the ubiqitous & fleeting disaster pictures and headlines.
