There's a massive construction project going on in Din Daeng, between Prachasongkro and Mitmaitri (not far from Vibhavadi Rangsit), including a 20-story building nearing maximum height and what looks like piling works on a huge area all around -- we're talking Paragon-sized or larger here. Anybody know what this is? I'll try to get a few snaps later today...
On this map (http://www.bangkok-maps.com/images/bkk-ratchadapisek04.gif), the area in question is the blank square to the right of Vibhavadi Rangsit, above the stadium.
[Ed: Link fixed; there is evil anti-cut-n-paste technology in use on the map site, but nothing the nefarious haxx0r tool known as View Source can't defeat!]
The link doesn't work for some reason (it's blank).
But I think I know the site you're talking about. The only major construction project in Din Daeng as far as I know is the new Bangkok City Hall. It was designed many years ago but seem the construction has only started recently.
There are some info on my website: http://www.geocities.com/topsyturvy_6051/unco02.html#cityhall
I have more photos of the plans / renderings from an architectural magazine. I'll have to scan them first.
Don't think this is for the BMA as the Kor Tor Mor area is south of Mitmaitri.
I remember standing on an appartement building on Sutthisan 29 last year when I saw that construction site as well.
Well I'm pretty sure it is phase 1 of the BMA complex.
But just to be certain it would help if we can see clearly the map Jpatokal is referring to (a recent photo may be useful to).
He did mentioned that the area in question is 'above the stadium'..so I guess that's the Thai-Japanese stadium.
When I get home I'll scan the location map & floor plan of this new BMA complex. This project does have a big building footprint and I don't know of any major project(s) with 20+ storeys tower in that vicinity.
Mmh, my girlfriend is working for Kor Tor Mor, let me recheck with her...

I think Khun Pas is right! Took a few pictures today:

Sorry about the crappy picture quality, these are literally taken from my window as I couldn't find a way to climb up to the roof without breaking my neck. Anyway, the BMA theory is supported by the facts that...
one of existing buildings in the background (http://jpatokal.iki.fi/tmp/DinDaengConstruction.JPG) has "BMA" on it in English (too small to read here, but it does)
the big blue construction site sign (http://jpatokal.iki.fi/tmp/DinDaengConstruction_Sign.JPG) has the BMA logo and says "Krung Thep Mahanakhon" up top (and the only other thing I understand is that this will cost a cool 2.4 billion baht)
the highrise (http://jpatokal.iki.fi/tmp/DinDaengConstruction_Highrise.JPG) looks like that on Pas' website, and the funny cross-shaped building in front is in the correct place too
The construction of that building has been processing so slowly! (A floor every three months or so) and has been going on for years. I thought 2Bangkok had some renderings of it somewhere on the site (that we got from Pas), but I can't seem to find it... It was supposed to have three towers, but now only the middle tower is being built.
Yes the construction is so slow
Here's an aerial photo of the site (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/passean/bma_site.jpg)
from "SpaceView:Bangkok" book. The building under construction is indicated as "Samnakgarn Rabai Nam" ie. Department of Drainage & Sewerage.
Note the existing City Hall building (Sala Va Garn Kor-tor-mor 2) is the lowrise building with frontage to Soi Mitmaitri 2.

from "SpaceView:Bangkok" book.Pas, FYI, that's satellite imagery (IKONOS), not aerial photos.
Jpatokal, now we know where you live (when you happen to be in BKK, that is)! (All it takes is to combine a) your photos and b) the satellite image - there can be no doubt about the building.) :D
