Now that's cool...... didn't know that there was such thing as Khmer Rouge Cartography:

Administrative Zones of Democratic Kampuchea (http://www.yale.edu/cgp/maps/bigmap01.gif)

Description of the map (http://www.yale.edu/cgp/maps/bigmap01.html)

Same zones in English (http://www.yale.edu/cgp/maps/bigmap02.gif)

Apart from that, of course this Genocide Mapping Project is important and probably long overdue.

Yes, Yale Uni has a world-renowned reputation with its Genocide Studies Program and documentation of Genocide including other recent work on East Timor, Rwanda etc. I think it has been going for about 10yrs now. The current director Ben Kiernan has written extensively on Cambodia (some of you probably have one of his books) and East Timor.

In fact the Yale program has also had 'input' of material to the prosecutors offices of ICTR & ICTY (UN war crimes courts in The Hague) and also the Special Court for Serious Crimes in East Timor (a joint UN/national war crimes tribunal).

Now that final technical aspects of the agreement for the Cambodian War Crimes Tribunal have been finalised btn UN & Cambodian Govt. funding is being promised by donor countries (esp. Japan). We may well finally see prosecutions begin of former Kmher Rouge leaders (the few that are alive) sometime next year.

Unfortunately, Cambodia would only agree to a small pool of potential indictees so the scope of investigations is very limited, ("...to senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea and those who were most responsible...", Art. 5 (3) of the Agreement) and only during the accepted 'reign' of the KR (17 April 1975 to 6 January 1979, Art. 1 of the Agreement) even though many atrocities took place after this time in areas of the country the KR retained effective control after the Vietnamese invasion.

Most of the indictment material is readily available being already well documented by UN, NGOs,academics incl. Yale. However, political interference by current Cambodian politicians (who have already 'dragged their heels' for the last few years), many with links to KR, will be the key to the success or otherwise of the tribunal particularly in relation to witnesses being able to 'freely appear to testify to the tribunal.

Hopefully Cambodians will see the process as a form of justice, if belatedly!

Also, given the Thai militarys previous 'cosy' relationship with much of the KR leadership there may well be some light shed on the support given to the KR by old retired Generals/politicians.

Although much of this support was especially in the years after Vietnam invaded. KR Generals and soldiers were frequently crossing the Thai border to visit 'entertainment establishments' in Ubon for years. And of course much joint Thai military/KR black market activity is alleged to have taken place during this time.

An interesting one to watch.....

Was it Pol Pot or Ta Mok who had his own Filling Station somewhere in Isaan close to the border?

For some reason, this is the only part of the site that has a selection of maps.
