Taxi drivers required to ask?

I take taxis twice a day. Since last month, every time I get in a taxi, the driver (somewhat wearily) asks me "what country are you from?" I answer and then the driver falls silent as if he is required to ask all passengers that question. This has happened so consistently I'm thinking it must be part of the new security procedures. I wonder what would happen if I answered I was from Pakistan or Saudi Arabia?

oh..i think they might only know how to say that sentence. and just trying to be friendly with foreigners maybe. :D

but security concern is becoming more serious around the world nowadays i think. especially during the APEC, they must be extra careful due to the threat from terrorists.
