Rama IX is a cable-stayed bridge (as is the Rama VIII Bridge).

I am not an engineer, but I gather it's as follows:

A suspension bridge has 1) main cables connecting its pylons and 2) other cables attached to (and going down vertically from) the former, from which in turn the road surface is hanging (suspended).

Whereas a cable-stayed bridge has oblique cables connecting the bridge surface directly to the pylons.

Maybe try this page and compare the Rama IX and Golden Gate Bridges (click the pix to enlarge):

See the difference?
