OK, I've been following this since I started reading 2Bangkok and I'm still confused.
I thought both Thaksin and Suriya were on the same side, ie. basically with interests in the auto business and hence against mass transit in general and Ch. Karnchang in particular? So why is Thaksin now stopping the nationalization,
and thus siding with BTS/BMCL against Suriya?

Don't be confused - Thaksin is only on one person's side and that is Thaksin's!
However, whilst this action may or may not be pro-auto, it is certainly aimed at next year's General election where present polls predict Thaksin will do badly in Bangkok - and the major reason - failure to deal with traffic!

I also primarily see this as a populistic measure ahead of the elections.
It should also be noted that there have reportedly been personal conflicts between Thaksin and Suriya during the last time.
Anyway, I am happy that this stupid plan is finally gone (or is it?), and neither do I feel sorry for "Ai Suriya" (as Khun Wisarut lovingly calls him).... :p

What do you expect from Toyota guy??
He bought a new RED Mercedez for (how much) 10 M Baht. And he won a bargain for a license plate #9999 which costed 4 M Baht.
4 M Baht for 2 aluminum plates!!
You can buy a fake set for 500!
It is business as usual and I am so delighted that this plan is a flop (or not?).
It does not work and it won't. BTS will eventually go for extensions as TRT can no longer persist pressure from BKK pepole.

I really hope that you are correct.

To nationalize or not that’s the question
First of all I follow the story only in headlines, living in Thailand the whole year around I might be overwhelmed by the stupidity this so-called soap generate.
The best phrase I read: reroute the skytrain. I’m wondering if the Toyota guy has a slight idea what the skytrain really is and ever had a close look at it or even better, ride it. For a Benz addict quit a challenge.
Here in Europe privatisation is the big word, although not in every case this is beneficial for the public.
See for example what happened with British rail after the government sold the system to the private sector.
Public transport is a necessity and not a mean to make money only, something almost the legitimated goal of a private enterprise.
Therefore public transportation in general should be a government task, without the sole objective to make profit but on the other hand not an organisation where taxpayers money disappear as snow for the sun.
However, in Thailand I am not so sure if the intention is quinine. No; it is a wild life out there, I presume the only thing that counts is self interest and not a common one. The day, on which his Benz will stick in traffic even without moving a few inches, maybe he is prepared to do things contrary on his own interest.
To govern means looking ahead. For the sake of many things; when will these boys wake up and get adult.
anohter simple reason may be that Thaksin (yes, I saw him a few days ago at the Sanam Luang farmers gathering: when I asked a nice lady at a Surin bus for my 200 baht, it was for Thai people only...........) very much admires Singapore (its Chinese too) and wants to catch up by that Asian model of business: and as you all know, it has a very good subway system. Also a new airport to compete with KUL, Shanghai etc.
