View Full Version : Rattanakosin Hotel
What is the "real" name of the Rattanakosin Hotel at Phan Phipop Lila Bridge near Sanam Luang? I am asking because to foreigners it is actually known as the Royal Hotel. On the facade above the entrance it says "Rattanakosin" in Thai and "Royal Hotel" in English. Does it have two names? Why?
Know what? In December they had a poster advertising their lunch buffet on the exterior wall. And that one said "Royal Rattanakosin" (in Thai writing)!
So probably that is the real (original) name of the hotel? And then some interesting cultural selection process happened: the Thai people dropped the "Royal" (because it was too difficult to pronounce), while the Westerners dropped the "Rattanakosin" (for the same reason)?
Just a theory.....
Here are some pics to illustrate the matter:
At the entrance (http://tinypic.com/4gnh44) it says Rattanakosin in Thai and Royal in English.
The lunch buffet poster (http://tinypic.com/4gnh4x) in Thai language, with Royal Rattanakosin on it.
On the other hand, the 1950 ad (http://tinypic.com/4gnhao) (from the 2B mainpage) speaks of the Ratanakosin Hotel in English.....
