This suicidal practice is also widespread in Southern Thailand, where rural workers have access to the acids used in latex production. In the words of one radiologist, it is rarely fatal - so it is often a bit like a cri de coeur. The procedure to get the oesophagus back into a condition in which the patient can eat properly is protracted and agonizing in its own right. And the patient is then more likely to suffer cancer of the oesophagus in later life. One wonders if this particular person found a stronger acid, as death would often be much slower than this:
Worker dies after taking acid
SEREMBAN: A 31-year-old estate worker who married his childhood sweetheart in September died after consuming acid at his home in Kuala Jelai estate in Bahau yesterday.
J. Sarawanan was believed to have been distraught after his wife moved out of his parents’ house in December.
He was found groaning in pain by a friend at 10am.
His father, G. Jaganathan, 50, said they rushed Sarawanan to the Tuanku Ampuan Najihah Hospital in Kuala Pilah.
“He died 10 minutes after being admitted.
“I told him to be positive as things would get better. I never expected him to do this,” said Jaganathan.
