View Full Version : Davenport Diesel Locos
Rob. Have you got any pics of the Davenports etc? I live in Hat-Yai.
To put you in the picture a bit, approx the first km+ of the Old Hat-Yai to Songkhla was still used until 2001 for Bulk Cement Delivery. That has been discontinued and the level-crossing rails have been tarred over, but the track is still there.
There are municipal/provincial plans to make the line into a light-rail transit; connected to a monorail around Hat-Yai city-centre.
But I wouldn't hold your breath waiting!
Hopefully, Khun W will give us some uptodate on that.
I've only met one person locally who ever travelled on that line. My old boss used to go to school on it.

I have offered GWR a nice picture off my CD-ROM of Davenport 515 at Songhkla which is what he wants; sorry, this is not a public offering, it took many, many hours to compile this product and the rewards are small.
Yes, I know the old railways to the sugar mills are long gone.... At least we have some pictures of them at work thanks to Basil Roberts.
Are the mills at Wang Kapi and Lampang still open? And, if so, how old is the machinery inside them?
What a shame it's just another C56 at Ratchaburi. In China they recently discovered a steam loco from 1898 at the bottom of a river! It's the second oldest steam loco in the country.
Remember visiting the outdoor market opposite Hat-Yai Freight Shed in 1992 and seeing a Davenport busily shunting stuff around. Definitely brought to mind the Rev. Awdry's 'Thomas the Tank Engine'. And I continued to see it for some years after. But I don't remember seeing a functioning one of late. Do they still exist in Yai? Are they still operative?

For Davenport 500, better look at Thung Song ... I could see ONLY Krupp at Hat Yai Shed ... Davenport 1000 is veruy hard to find ... ONLY 1 at Sila At ... and NO more since SRT order ONLY 15 Daveneport Locos of 1000 HP Type.

I lived in Malaysia in the 1970s and have great memories of steam in Haatyai and riding the Songkla branch with the baby Davenport diesels.
This is an interesting information !
I myself and some Thai railfan are seeking information and photo before 1978 of Hatyai-Songkhla line.
I'm also the one who love steam locomotive.
