From an (English) newspaper some days ago, I saw that someone in some krwatruang=ministry wants to make the Trains free around the main 31/12 and 1/1 getaway long weekend. Ordered SRT to make a plan! Not seen anything about it since, anohter pipedream?
Some years ago they made the BMTA (but only the hot red ones) buses free on night of 1/1, as curb against drunk driving

Also read that somewhere. Wasn't it Ai Newin who proposed/ordered it? Quite a nonsense. Guess it'll be quietly forgotten.....

Typical bloody politicians! Always the first to condemn loss-making services, but always expecting a free lunch themselves at the same time:

Transport Minister to request SRT and Transport Co. to lower fares
The Transport Minister, Adm. Thira Haocharoen (ธีระ ห้าวเจริญ), plans to ask the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and the Transport Company Limited to reduce their transport fares during the election period. Thus, people would be encouraged to cast their ballots in their hometown. The decision is expected to finalize in the next two weeks.

Following the Cabinet meeting yesterday (November 13th), Adm. Thira says the Ministry of Transport together with the Royal Thai Police will jointly facilitate commuters during the coming polls.

Adm. Thira says the SRT and the Transport Company Limited will be asked to lower their transport fares as well. The discount will be similar to the fare reduction during the constitution referendum in August this year. The SRT gave 50 percent discount for third-class tickets while the Transport Company Limited also lowered the fares by 50 percent. At the same time, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) provided public transport services free of charge.

Train fares to be slashed to help voters

(BangkokPost.com) – The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is making sure Thais across the country have no excuses for not going to the polls this year.

The SRT is offering a fifty percent discount on all second and third class tickets to encourage as many people as possible to cast their vote on December 23.

Pairat Rojcharoen-ngarm, an SRT public relations officer said the offer is valid between Dec 21-24.

Passengers will asked to present their personal identification cards to the ticket office to be eligible for the discount, which applies to train services to all destinations.

A 24-hour hotline, 1690, has been set up to provide more information for passengers.

SRT to slash fares in February

(BangkokPost.com) – In the climate of rising oil prices, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has decided to reverse the trend and provide some joy for commuters for a change.

Pairat Rotecharoen-ngarm, head of the SRT’s public relations department, affirmed that train fares will be reduced to lighten the load for commuters who already have to put up with rising oil prices.

"Starting on February 1, express trains traveling a distance of less than 300 kilometres will have their fares slashed," he said.

Commuters will be charged 20 baht each for the first 50 kilometres. Those traveling a distance of less than 150 kilometres will be charged 30 baht and 50 baht for a distance of less then 300 kilometres.

The SRT has also adjusted the entire ticketing system, a move aimed at improving the ticket reimbursement and postponement systems.

More details available on the SRT’s 24-hour hotline 1690

hello all, and Sawasdee phimai (guess this is my 1st for 2008, currently not in LOS).
I have some feeling that this ONLY refers to the rather high surcharges (is not that now 80 THB for express=rot duan?) and not to the fares themselves. Besides: there are hardly any real commuters (daily home-to-work) who use expresses, I guess. Otherwise its just newspeak for a giant farerise: 3d cl. is 1 THB per any 5 km: thus its 5 Bt till Don Muang, 6 bt. till Rangsit, 13 bt till ChaChoengSao=, or indeed 20 bt for 96-100 kms. about the most heavily used ''commuter''trains.

Hi,

I will be in Thailand in April and should book my tickets as I am travelling to Nong Khai just before Songkran.

Has anyone used the www.traveller2000.com website to organise tickets?

I did search the forum but didn't get any matches.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Charles.

Im not sure about using that site. But most people just book there tickets at Hualamphong or bang sue stations as soon as they get to Bangkok.

If you know someone in Thailand you can get them to buy the tickets upto 60days before the trip.

Just a note that train to nong khai will be very full as songkaran is the most busy travel time in Thailand. Its possiable if you cannot get a booking that you will have to stand from Bangkok to nong khai. This is a 12 hour long train ride. If find the train full, there are a number of bus companies operating out of Mochit 2 that can often get you there quicker.but again standing the whole way is possiable at songkaran time.

this comp is reported to be OK, though i myself never used it. HIGH mark-up for their service though. And on very, very busy days you may not get what you wanted exactly....
read seat61.com, it has a link to email the SRT direct and order tickets. BUT: seems to work only half/half (choi/choi we say here). In fact IMHO it seems that on really busy days like that they simply keep the tickets for the thai themselves.
Consider fly to udon+minivan direct from there: airasia.com or nokair.com; OR Thai itself, of course.

Hi,

I have received a reply from one of the companies listed on the seat61 website saying all tickets from Bangkok to Udon Thani are sold out from 10th to 17th April.

I think this means they have none to sell. Sounds like what pong says is correct about keeping the seats for the thais.

Charles.

In such a case, better ask Thailanders to buy this high season tickets ...

Otherwise, it is necessary to buy a standee ticket (third class) for either Udorn DMU Express 75/78 or Nong Khai DMU Express 77/76
