Horse Rider in Chiangmai

With oil prices continuing to skyrocket, people are searching for cheapermeans of travel. Bicycles are an option but what about a horse? A resident in Chiang Mai has found his horse to be a man’s best friend when it comes on to transportation costs. We have more details in this report from Thai News Agency.

This is neither a scene in a movie nor a horse racing event. The sight of this middle-aged man riding on horseback side-by-side with automobiles is omnipresent in Chiang Mai’s district of Maejo.
Horse riding was initially a hobby for Panu Niamchompoo but the four-legged animal has now become his major means of transportation in light of surging oil prices.

“Riding my horse saves me a lot of money. I used to spend around 1,200 baht a month driving my car to and from work. Since resorting to horse riding, I pay only 300 baht a month. That’s for the horses’ food.” he said.

Panu is not alone in the horse-riding option as Maejo University has encouraged students to ride horses on the campus and in its neighbourhood. Not every horse can run on the main roads though. And not all of them can cope with the traffic rules like Panu’s horse. Worse than that, most horses are easily frightened when they hear a car’s horn or when a car cuts in front of them.

For distances longer than 10 kilometres or during rush hour, Panu still prefers to jump on his motorcycle to save his horse from having to deal with the heat and crowded roads.

Ironically, while Panu finds horse-riding a practical cost-saving means, an increasing number of motorists in the North and Northeast have been queuing up to have their vehicles fitted with devices to use natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas instead of gasoline.

“There are many ways to help one another reduce energy consumption. If you rely too much on oil, you can’t live a happy life as oil prices will never stop increasing. I don’t mean you have to ride a horse, cow or buffalo all the time. Simply live with nature and blend the new technology into traditional ways of living harmoniously.” said Panu.

There’s no sign of a decline in oil prices and many people are still searching for the best possible way to save money. Panu has his answer, and… a good companion on the road.

In the wake of rising petrol prices, Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung yesterday floated an idea encouraging district chiefs in the provinces to travel on horseback.

Chalerm was speaking at the monthly ministry meeting through video conferencing. There were no immediate reports on reactions from ministry officials.

District chiefs in Bangkok were also advised to pay inspection visits in their jurisdictions on foot.
