Jamaica to revive railroad industry with China's help
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Jamaica is reviving its railroad industry with help from China to offset rising fuel costs and provide a transportation alternative.
Transportation Minister Michael Henry says the Chinese government has agreed to finance 85 percent of the US$354 million (euro228 million) project through a loan with Jamaica's Railway Corporation.
Construction of 18 new railway stations across the island is expected to take about three years. The train would connect cities such as Kingston, Spanish Town and Montego Bay.
It is unclear when construction will start. Henry said in a statement Friday that Jamaica will receive five engines, 45 passenger coaches and 68 freight coaches. - AP
