View Full Version : Hat-Yai Unwired Project
There's a major advertising campaign around Hat-Yai right now to publicise the 'Tessabahn Nakorn Hat-Yai' project to put street cables in underground ducts. I'll post some pictures of the promotional material soon.
Hopefully, there will also be a campaign to improve sidewalks too.

Here's one of the large promotional boards:-

The sign says that a contract has been signed for the placement of electricity cables (& presumably telephone lines) in underground ducts on the main streets of Niphat-Uthit 1, 2 & 3 and Thanon Saneanusorn (in the region of Lee Gardens Plaza) The poster features (TOP) before & after shots looking North up Saneanusorn towards the Regency Hotel; and (Bottom) B&A shots looking South down Niphat Uthit 3 in the region of Ocean Shopping Mall. The top right picture shows pedestrians walking down the middle of the street, from which I surmise they intend some kind of partial pedestrianisation. This figures, as this street is already often pedestrianised during special festivals & promotions.
This work to be completed in 2006.
Reading the poster again, I note that they do talk about placing telephone cables (and I suppose fibre-optic cables) underground too. But the one thing I wonder about (having seen some evidence of it in the BEFORE pics) is whether they have given any consideration as to what they are going to hang the perpetual fairylights and street banners from in future. Bet your bottom dollar they haven't; in which case they'll then have to spend millions of Baht creating some unsightly gantries for the almost-all-year-round street decs. At which point, we'll be back to 'Costly Square One'. I don't suppose for one minute they would be able to dragoon all the shopowners into attaching street decorations to their store facades.
'Hat-Yai Unwired' seems to be the English slogan for the quoted Underground Ducting Project in Hat-Yai. Here's one side of a promotional leaflet to show you some of the photographed 'before' shots and airbrushed 'after' shots in greater detail:-

Yes, I have seen from the Final Report of Hatyai's Master plan prepared by http://www.a7corp.com/.
There is a plan for sidewalk improvement.

I'm told that the Hat-Yai City Municipality underground cabling project has actually started. One visitor spoke of the main streets looking like a warzone as a result of all the excavation in progress. And the road surfaces and sidewalks are now even more perilous than previous. I'm also beginning to think that this might also partly explain the terrible internet service in the district in the last three months.
Picture of one of the flood alleviation canals that bypass floodwater around Hat-Yai City Center. This photograph taken halfway between the city and Songkhla Lake:

I have just been downtown to inspect the effects of the 'Hat-Yai Unwired' Project on Saneh Anusorn Road. Compare with the linked 'Tinypic' images above which contain some rather dingy 'before' shots. The project isn't completely finished, as there are still some light standards to erect. You will also note that some very large and rather ugly transformer poles for larger commercial premises are still in situ. Other streets in Hat-Yai are still being recabled in this manner, so road surfaces and sidewalks are worse than usual at the moment. Notice the paviored road surface. This street is often pedestrianised for special events. You will see they are here preparing the Hat-Yai Christmas 2007 & Hat-Yai New Year Countdown 2008 events. There's a free concert tonight with Thai, Malaysian and Singaporean bands & singers. Quite a few tourists around! Click on the thumbnail below for the fullsize image:

Here's a rather more romantic picture of the same street (possibly on the same day) from BoyHY. Loads of interesting Hat-Yai pictures in the forum link below:

The letter below - not exhaustively translated - seems to indicate a further step in the 'Hat-Yai Unwired' project. Apparently, as of this February 20th, there will be work beginning to bury street cabling on Petchkasem Road from the VL Hotel all the way East to Khor Hong Intersection - a distance of about 4 Kms. The letter announcing this development seems to come from Khun Rungrot at the Hat-Yai City Municipality. With posters already up for the upcoming Mayoral Election, it is obviously essential for the current Mayor Prai Pattano to look as good as possible if he is to be re-elected. Anyone like to translate a bit more of this for us. Or to follow up on the source of this letter in the Hat-Yai thread on Skyscraper City. Loads of Hat-Yai info and pictures in that thread, but most of the text is in Thai:
