End of an era!?:

MAS And Singapore Airlines End Shuttle Service Deal

KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines have mutually decided to terminate the Shuttle Agreement on their services between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, with effect from June 1.

The two national carriers started the shuttle service in 1982, in response to demand for shuttle-like flights between the two cities.

In a joint statement, they said the termination of the Shuttle Agreement will not reduce frequencies or change the fact that a wide variety of fares are now available on the route.

The Shuttle Agreement provided for the carriers to agree on a common fare to charge customers who turned up at the airport on standby for the next flight, they added.

The progressive deregulation of the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur route and the ever-increasing use of the Internet for a variety of transactions such as booking of tickets and check-in (even at the last minute), has changed the travel landscape, removing the need for a shuttle service, they said.

The newly-deregulated market has opened up opportunities for the two airlines to offer more frequency and fare options, which will better serve the needs of the travelling public, they added.

Malaysia Airlines Commercial Director, Datuk Abdul Rashid Khan said bilateral airline co-operation has evolved over the years into comprehensive and more flexible arrangements to cope with the ever growing challenges faced by the industry.

"In our case, co-operation with Singapore Airlines has moved into dynamic code-share that allows each airline to determine its own fare options and yet allow uplift of each others passengers," he added.

It is only natural that the earlier shuttle service arrangement which served both carriers' needs earlier is phased out, he added.

This is a bit of a shame, although it's not unexpected. The big deal about the shuttle service was that you could use an SQ ticket on MH flights and vica versa, but that got a lot less convenient once both started implementing e-tickets, which couldn't be "switched" unless you went through the trouble of converting it into a paper ticket first -- while this could be done at the airport, it was a silly hassle. Then SQ cut frequencies during the SARS scare and never brought them back again, turning what had been hourly flights into once every few hours, so you couldn't really just "show up" and expect to get on board... and now of course you have Tiger, Jetstar and Air Asia clawing for a slice of the market and on track to expand their services massively at the end of the year.

But I'm not going to shed too many tears: if Air Asia has its way, they alone will be running hourly flights soon enough, and unlike the shuttle service, you won't have to pay almost S$200 one-way for a 35-min flight!

MAS to stop flights to 15 destinations
Published: 2008/07/08

IN line with its Business Turnaround Plan, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) would cease flights to 15 destinations which suffered heavy losses.

Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat said MAS management was forced to make the bitter decision and has nothing to do with politics.

“The destinations are KL-Manchester, KL-Vienna, KL-Zurich, KL-Fukuoka, KL-Nagoya, KL-Ahmedabad, KL-Kolkata, KL-Pontianak, KL-Xian, KL-Chengdu, KL-Cairo, Kuching-Perth, Kuching-Sydney, Langkawi-London and Penang-London,” he said in Dewan Rakyat today.

Ong was responding to a question by Fong Po Kuan (DAP-Batu Gajah) on which MAS routes were facing losses.

He said MAS would cease the flights in stages.

On whether there were plans to let low-cost airline, AirAsia Bhd, take over the routes, Ong said the matter required study and discussions with all sectors, including the two airlines. — Bernama

Huh? AFAIK MAS hasn't flown any of these in several years. Are they just changing "suspended" routes into "terminated" ones...?
