Spokesperson for the Transportation Ministry J.A. Barata said Wednesday that a consortium of PT Kereta Api and PT Angkasa Pura II would build a railway line from Kalideres in West Jakarta, to the airport.

He said that they would build the 10-kilometer line next year and hoped to finish it in 2009.

The new route will pass Manggarai, South Jakarta, Dukuh Atas and Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, Grogol, Pesing, Rawa Buaya in West Jakarta and Kalideres stations.

Some areas need to be cleared in order for the Rp 700 billion project to start, he said, giving no details on the technicalities of land acquisition.

"We are doing our job as efficiently as possible. Angkasa Pura owns most of the land where the line will pass so a clash between the project and the community can be avoided," he told The Jakarta Post.

As efficiently as possible? :D A year ago I would've given this a 0% chance of happening, now I'm willing to upgrade it 1%...

I am actually wondering why Jakarta will want to waste money to build a rail link from Kalideres, West Jakarta to Soekarno-Hatta Airport which is in West Jakarta too because the rail link is not going to link to the domestic and international terminals. What will be more helpful will be a rail link linking Soekarno-Hatta Airport to Halim Perdanakusuama Airport in East Jakarta.

I am actually wondering why Jakarta will want to waste money to build a rail link from Kalideres, West Jakarta to Soekarno-Hatta Airport
Because the current rail head is in Kalideres. They can run through trains to other stations from there.
which is in West Jakarta too because the rail link is not going to link to the domestic and international terminals.
Garuda domestic flights already use Terminal 2 (the international one). I don't think there are that many people transferring to other domestic operators.
What will be more helpful will be a rail link linking Soekarno-Hatta Airport to Halim Perdanakusuama Airport in East Jakarta.
Why? HLP is very lightly used these days, it only has a few turboprop flights and like.

"Airport railway to finish by 2009" - an impossible timeline! Great to see this project progressing.

Airport railway to finish by 2009 City News - January 19, 2008

JAKARTA : A railway project to Soekarno-Hatta airport is scheduled to finish by the end of 2009, an official said. "The design is almost done. We're now waiting for the detailed planning," the president director of PT Railing, Masdhratul Hidayat, said Friday.

PT Railing, a subsidiary of the railway company PT Kereta Api, and the airport operator PT Angkasa Pura, are managing the project. After the details are finished, PT Railing will secure funding. "We expect the funding will be disbursed by March or April," he said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com. "We can't comment on the budget needed for building the railway track as we are still calculating it," he added.

The railway track will pass several train stations, namely Manggarai, Dukuh Atas and Angke. The track will be an alternative means of public transportation to and from the airport besides buses and taxis. "Each year, 30 million people flock to the airport. So the need for alternative transportation is also increasing," Masdhratul said. - JP

Jakarta's Airport Railway Project To Be Completed March 2009

JAKARTA, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- State-owned railway company PT Kereta Api (PT KA) is expecting its airport railway project in Jakarta to be completed in March 2009, which is about five months earlier than scheduled, Antara news agency reported Wednesday, quoting company spokesman as saying Tuesday.

With a total cost of Rp3.6 trillion, the project aims to connect Manggarai railway station in central Jakarta with Soekarno-Hatta international airport via Muara Angke station -- a distance of 33.7 kilometres.

"The financing problem will be solved this month so that construction can start in March and the project can be completed one year later or about five months earlier than originally planned," PT KA President Director Ronny Wahyudi said here Tuesday.

He said he was optimistic there was great investors' interest in the project because a study had shown that after reaching an operational state it would financially reach a break-even point in at most eight years' time.

Several bank syndicates had officially expressed interest in financing the project.

"This morning (Feb 5), we signed a deal with Bank Mandiri, BNI, BRI and Bank Mega," he said.

Wahyudi said 70 percent of the project's cost would be covered with national syndicated bank loans and 15 percent with the implementing consortium's equity. The consortium's paricipants - PT Railink, PT Jasa Marga and PT Wika -- would provide 15 percent of the required investment based on a 40:30:30 ratio.

The remaining 15 percent would be offered to other interested parties.

Administration considers jumping onboard rail project
Mustaqim Adamrah , The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Sat, 05/03/2008 11:14 AM | City

The Jakarta administration is studying a possible railway system to connect the capital to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

"We support the idea about improving our transportation system, among others, by connecting the city to Tangerang and Soekarno-Hatta Airport," Deputy Governor Prijanto said Friday at City Hall.

"Most importantly the future railway system must be integrated within the existing railway and busway systems, as well as future monorail and subway systems."

The administration still needs to study all the financial consequences, he said adding that he will report to Governor Fauzi Bowo prior to further decisions.

Fauzi is visiting Japan to meet with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and is scheduled to return by the end of the week.

In a meeting on Wednesday at Vice President Jusuf Kalla's office, the Jakarta administration was asked to participate in the project.

"The offer came to us as one of the stations is planned to be built in Dukuh Atas, Central Jakarta," said Prijanto.

Transportation Minister Djusman Syafii Jamal, Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto, Forestry Ministry Malam Sabit Kaban and Banten Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah were also present at the meeting.

Initially, the project -- which will connect the train station in Manggarai, South Jakarta, to the airport -- is projected to swallow at least Rp 4.6 trillion (US$499 million) for new railway construction, Antara reported.

"But the Vice President suggested the project use existing railways (that have been abandoned)," said Minister Djusman.

"As a result, the project will need only Rp 2.2 trillion to build 15 kilometers of new railways."

Jusuf demands that all required public biddings be carried out "as quick as possible", Djusman said.

The new railway construction is expected to start by July and to be completed in November next year.

The future railway system has been at the planning stage for years and has faced delays due to land acquisition disputes.

The system is expected to serve as an alternative to the Sedyatmo turnpike, a main passage to the airport, and is expected to help the transport goods and commuters faster.

Seems like a fair enough concern - just build a local and express service. I like the quote by the Gov; "The railway system will only serve those who want to reach or leave the airport quickly. Not many of those people are Jakartans". So either Jakartans don't use the airport or they only want to reach or leave SLOWLY!?

'City won't invest in airport train' - The Jakarta Post 05/07/2008

JAKARTA: Governor Fauzi Bowo rejected Monday the idea the city administration would invest in a railway project to connect the capital to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang. He said the administration would take the idea seriously if the project was designed mainly in the interest of Jakartans. "The railway system will only serve those who want to reach or leave the airport quickly. Not many of those people are Jakartans," he said at City Hall.

However, Deputy Governor Prijanto said the administration might take part in the project after a meeting with Vice President Jusuf Kalla last Wednesday. The new service -- headed by PT RaiLink, a subsidiary of state railway operator PT Kereta Api -- will connect Manggarai train station in South Jakarta to the airport. -- JP

Train project attracts few investors, Mustaqim Adamrah The Jakarta Post , 04/07/08
Investors are reluctant to take part in a railway project that will connect Manggarai, South Jakarta, to Soekarno-Hatta airport despite lucrative prospects, says a government official. Director for railway traffic and services at the Transportation Ministry, Sugiadi Waluyo, said PT Railink was the only company to express investment interest in the project, which they did Thursday.

Railink is a subsidiary of state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II and state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api. "Investors are not yet convinced of the project. They are considering many factors, including the projected number of passengers, which may be unstable," Sugiadi said Thursday.

He said he hoped more investors would be interested if the government came up with more project details. The central government plans to build the 32.7-kilometer railway system to deal with traffic congestion and flooding on the Prof. Sedyatmo toll road, used to access the airport. The railway construction project, worth Rp 4.6 trillion (US$498.6 million), will traverse through several main stations, like Dukuh Atas and Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta, as well as Muara Angke and Pluit in North Jakarta.

Sugiadi said the ministry would announce the details of the construction projects after the government, and the Jakarta and Tangerang administrations agreed on certain details of the railway construction, including repairing the deteriorating railway conditions in several parts of the two regions. "We'll publicly open the tender after we reach an agreement," he said. "I hope investors will be interested afterwards." Sugiadi also said investors should not worry about the number of passengers considering 32 million people took flights from the airport last year.

The ministry's director general of trains, Wendy Aritenang Yazid, said the complexity of the railway construction was another hurdle that the construction company would face in the project. "The construction won't be simple. The tracks will be slightly elevated from the ground," he told Bisnis Indonesia daily last week.

The ministry had planned to begin the line's operation in mid-2009, but postponed it until 2010 because of the complex elevated track system, he said. The government has set up a committee responsible for the tender. The committee members comprise officials from the Transportation Ministry, the National Development Planning Board, the Finance Ministry and the Coordinating Ministry for the economy, said Sugiadi.

Railink, initially assigned to deal with the construction and operation of the railway project, is currently drawing the detailed engineering design of the project. "We hope the design will be finished by the end of this month," Railink chief executive officer Masjraul Hidayat said Thursday. "We'll also build train stations at three terminals at the airport," he said. Masjraul said the state ministry for the environment was analyzing the environmental impact of the project. (ewd)

i will support and board Railink from Soekarno-Hatta to Manggarai if that means faster travel to the Jakarta city centre without paying any toll fee just like travel from KLIA to Kuala Lumpur. Manggarai is convenient since it connects to other parts of the city centre by TransJakarta buses. I detest Jakarta taxis due to their exorbitant fares and higher fuel prices.
