Department of Mineral Resources installs erosion sirens

Expert Counsel to the Department of Mineral Resources Worawut Tantiwanich (วรวุฒิ ตันติวนิช) stated that the nation must beware of erosion and landslides at two major times each year. The times are during the rainy season of May influenced by the Indian Ocean and the middle of the rainy season in August influenced by the Northwestern Wind.

Mr. Worawut said that during the raining season, the country is susceptible to landslides of disastrous proportions. He said that steep mountains that have been ravaged by deforestation are the most vulnerable to heavy erosion with studies showing areas in 51 provinces at risk.

The Department of Mineral Resources has made plans for the at risk areas and has set a general policy for offices throughout the nation to work on. A network of volunteers has been called upon to help in the warning of land slides with rain meters and sirens installed in over 4000 locations. The department plans to install the warning systems in a total of 6000 places within the coming years.
