This report seems a bit garbled to say the least. I'm rather more interested in the small comment on new tramlines:

Cambodia lays tracks for regional railway network

Phnom Penh (VNA) - Cambodia is looking at showing up its railway system in order to link it with Singapore, Thailand, Viet Nam and Kunming province of China, according to the Cambodian Ministry of Transport.

The blueprint calls for Cambodia to repair and build a railway section from Phnom Penh to Poipet of Thailand and another from Phnom Penh through Battambang province to the border of Viet Nam .

The Ministry also reported that, Thailand would invest 500 million USD to build two tram lines in Phnom Penh. Construction is slated for next year and will be completed by 2011.-Enditem

I was back in PP two weeks ago for the first time in a few years and was surprised at the increase in road traffic. Given the wide and boulevard type design of many of the cities majort roads it would be perfect for a LRT system. However, the lack of adherence to road rules in PP will make a street level system highly exposed to vehicle accidents in the first couple of years.

The two lines that are indicated seem to be a good start but one would hope that someone would be commissioned to look at design a future network over the next 20-30 years especially with the huge explosion in tourists (30% a year although most go only to Angkor Wat) and growth of the city east across the river.

I wonder if this is really a serious investment by Thailand?

France's Alstom Plans To Operate Trams In Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Nov 26 Asia Pulse - A French firm has said it plans to operate trams in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital, and Siem Reap to help reduce the number of traffic jams and ease air pollution, local media reported Monday.

Jean Lousiv Menuel, president of Alstom, presented his company's plan to run trams in Phnom Penh and later in Siem Reap province during a recent meeting between a French business delegation and Phnom Penh Municipal Governor Kep Chuktema, the Rasmei Kampuchea newspaper said.

The tram railways will maintain the environment and beauty of the cities, Jean Lousiv Menuel was quoted as saying.

According to the plan, a railway to be called Tranway will connect the outskirts of Phnom Penh to its downtown, from Phnom Penh International Airport to the center.

Kep Chuktema offered his support to the plan, saying that he hopes it will help reduce traffic jams in the city just as the number vehicles on the roads is markedly increasing.

The municipality will cooperate with Alstom to carry out a feasibility study, he said.
