Bridge over Dong Nai River to be built

19/05/2008 -- 11:58 AM
HCM City (VNA) – Construction of a new bridge over the Dong Nai River connecting the southern province of Dong Nai with Ho Chi Minh City’s District 9 will begin at the end of this month.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed on May 16 between the Vietnam Road Administration Department and the Construction Corporation No. 1, the Dong Nai Bridge No. 2, will be built upriver from the existing Dong Nai Bridge .

The 461 metre-long, 20 metre-wide, five-lane Bridge will take 1.88 trillion VND (117.5 million USD) and two years to build.

Of the amount, 622 billion VND (38.8 million USD) will go towards land acquitisition and be provided from the State budget. The remaining 1.26 trillion VND (78.7 million USD), the actual construction cost, will be brought in by the Construction Corporation No.1.

To be built under the build-operate-transfer form, the company will operate and collect toll for almost 30 years.

The bridge is expected to reduce traffic on the 44-year-old Dong Nai Bridge , one of the major bridges in the south but now deteriorating.

With around 8,000 vehicles using the old bridge every hour during peak hours against a capacity of 4,600, safety has become a factor.

Authorities have forbidden trucks weighing over 25 tonnes from using it since last September.

Road Authority No. 7 has also mandated a distance of 30 metres between heavy trucks traveling over the bridge at the same time.-Enditem
