Purpose of the Organization
Teacher Training Center for Burmese Teachers (TTBT) is a non-profit educational institute operating independently in exile, currently based in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand since 2001. It seeks to improve the quality of education in refugee camps, ceasefire areas, remote areas of Burma and migrant workers in Thailand, by training new teachers, promoting active learning, critical thinking and democratic practice in schools, providing professional development opportunities for existing teachers, and developing educational policy and practice. TTBT is launching a three-year project from 2008 to 2010 called, "Prospect Burma Education Project." The four components of this project are:
1. Teacher Preparation and Professional Development
2. Education Leadership and School Management
3. Education Policy and Curriculum Development
4. Skills Development for Refugees and Migrants
Job Summary
The Director for Curriculum Development reports to the Project Director of the TTBT Prospect Burma Education Project. The Director for Curriculum Development is responsible for two major components: education seminar and curriculum development. These components include designing and facilitating the training seminar of the curriculum at the educational institute for Burmese teachers. The curriculum must be based upon the International Schooling System. The Director for Curriculum Development will also be responsible for training educators on the school curriculum (English, Thai, Burmese, Science, Environmental Science, and Social Studies) as well as how to deliver the curriculum to students. The training delivered by the Director will ensure that teachers and headmasters will be able to effectively execute and educate students based upon the International Education System in institutions supported in Burma and the border regions.
2008 will primarily focus on Language Arts Curriculum Development. The Director will be supported by a volunteer advisory panel composed of 8 Professors currently instructing in the US and UK.
Job Duties (Responsibilities)
Train teachers regarding how to implement school curriculum;
Research and design curriculum based upon the International Education System;
Educating teachers regarding the following subject matters (English language, Burmese language, Social Studies, Science, Environmental Science);
Educating teachers regarding the following International Educational curriculum (English language, Burmese language, Social Studies, Science, Environmental Science);
Administrating student matters including dealing with complex queries and possible complaints;
Providing administrative support to lecturers, tutors and others in the academic team;
Drafting and interpreting regulations for future schools;
Maintaining high levels of quality assurance, including course evaluation and course approval;
Contributing to policy and planning;
Liaising with advisors, academic colleagues and students;
Liaising with partner institutions, other institutions, external agencies, government departments and prospective students;
Organizing and facilitating a variety of activities, educational or social;
Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications or Qualifications
Candidates for this position must have a college degree and two years of experience in developing school curriculums based on the International Education System, and in scope to the requirements and duties required for this position. Expertise in the curriculum delivered at the International Education System and is essential as the curriculum designed must follow suit. Candidates must have proven educational skills in the areas of curriculum development, facilitating seminars, and teacher training. They must also be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication skills in one-on-one and group settings; strong written and verbal communication skills; enjoyment of a student-centered environment; and familiarity with computers (PC/Windows platform and Microsoft Office). References should speak to the persons dexterity and effectiveness in teaching; and to his/her ability to work harmoniously with colleagues. Candidate should be fluent in both written and verbal skills for English and Burmese. Fluency in Thai language and one of the ethnic languages of Burma is a bonus.

This position will be a full-time, administrative appointment on a full-year schedule (Jan 1-Dec 31) and renewable for 3 years upon review. The position is currently open and the expected start date is Jan 1, 2008; the starting date is negotiable but the preference is to start in the beginning of 2008.
