Regarding today's story (http://nationmultimedia.com/2007/11/05/headlines/headlines_30054914.php) about Nittaiji Temple and the Thai-Japan connection, this theme has also been explored at length in Yukio Mishima's magnum opus, The Sea of Fertility (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sea_of_Fertility).
The first volume (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_Snow), set in the Meiji era, features a pair of Thai princes being educated in Japan as major characters. Most of the third volume (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Temple_of_Dawn) is set in Thailand, with a Thai princess playing a major role, and vast amounts of dense Buddhist philosophy mixed in.
