Copperfield's show in Bangkok likely to be cancelled

David Copperfield's "World of Wonder" show in Bangkok in November next month is likely to be cancelled following FBI's investigation on sexual misconduct accusations by an unidentified woman on him.

His shows in Malaysia has already been cancelled but the organiser in Thailand, RS, has not yet announced the cancellation of his Bangkok tour.

The Kuala Lumpur-based Star quoted Arianna Event Management director Arianna Teoh as saying the cancellation was due to the investigation by the FBI on the master illusionist.

"He needs to help in the investigations. Copperfield is not prevented from leaving the United States but he needs time to get to the bottom of things," Teoh said.

She said to be fair to all Copperfield fans, the management decided to cancel the shows here and would give him a week's grace after the conclusion of the investigations.

The FBI raided Copperfield's warehouse and a theatre where he performs in Las Vegas following sexual misconduct accusations by an unidentified woman.

The agency would not disclose the nature of its investigation, saying only that federal agents had raided the warehouse as part of a criminal probe based in Seattle.

Published reports said the woman had accused the popular illusionist of sexual misconduct while both were in the Bahamas, and that agents had seized some US$2mil (RM6.7mil) and computer equipment.

Copperfield, 51, uses the warehouse as an office, for rehearsals and to store memorabilia and props and keeps an apartment on the second floor.

Meanwhile US media reported that David Chesnoff, Copperfield's lawyer rebutted an allegation that Copperfield "forced himself" on a woman.

"An unidentified woman has made serious allegations against David Copperfield," lawyer Chesnoff said Friday in a statement.

"It is important these allegations be put into perspective," Chesnoff said. "Although authorities have not revealed her identity to us, we know these allegations are false because David Copperfield has never forced himself on anyone."

Neither Chesnoff nor law enforcement officials would provide details about the allegation or the warehouse search.

Seattle FBI agent Robbie Burroughs said Thursday that the Las Vegas investigation was part of a Seattle case.

"The Seattle case is pending and that means we can't say anything about it," Burroughs said.

FBI agents on Wednesday searched the Hollywood Theater at the MGM Grand casino-hotel, where Copperfield regularly performs, casino spokeswoman Yvette Monet told The Associated Press.

Agents also conducted "investigative activity" at a warehouse where Copperfield stores tricks and memorabilia, dubbed the International Museum & Library of Conjuring Arts, FBI agent David Staretz said.
Copperfield, 51, has been a longtime performer at the MGM Grand, where he has performed in six- to eight-week stints several times a year, Monet said.

Note these reports are now saying "rape" rather than "sexual misconduct":

Indonesian promoter to sue magician Copperfield for cancellation

JAKARTA -- Indonesian promoter Buena Productions plans to sue magician David Copperfield for cancelling scheduled shows in Jakarta, local media reported Tuesday.

The celebrity American magician cancelled shows across South-East Asia after agents from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided his Las Vegas warehouse and a casino theatre where he regularly performs after an unnamed woman accused him of raping her in the Bahamas last summer.

"This is my worst experience in show business. I don't know about other promoters, but I plan to sue him for 3 million dollars for cancelling his tour," Peter Basuki, owner of Buena Productions, was quoted as saying by Jakarta-based Kompas online news portal.

Copperfield was scheduled to perform his "World of Wonder" act for six nights in Jakarta starting Tuesday.

Basuki said he had contacted promoters in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore to join him in suing the magician.

"I have contacted Copperfield's agents and lawyers, but they said he is missing and difficult to reach," Basuki said, adding that his company had sold 29,000 tickets for Copperfield's Jakarta shows.

About 12 FBI agents raided the warehouse on October 18, where Copperfield stores props and memorabilia from around the world. Copperfield, 51, has been a longtime performer at the MGM Grand Casino Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip./DPA
