Thai monarch recovering from blood clot
Hospitalised Saturday for treatment of cerebral ischemia, Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej underwent about eight hours of surgery and related treatment for a blood clot which obstructed the flow of blood to his brain.
King Bhumibol, approaching his 80th birthday on December 5th, was taken to Siriraj Hospital about 9am Saturday, according to a statement from the Royal Household Bureau.
Cerebral ischemia means that the brain or parts of the brain do not receive sufficient blood to maintain normal thinking and bodily functions and can result from various diseases and obstruction of arteries such as by the blood clot removed from the monarch's leg.
Some eight hours of treatment alleviated the weakness in the right leg, according to the statement.
Born in the city of Boston, Massachusetts, in 1937, the monarch has occupied the Thai throne for more than 60 years, and is the world's longest reigning king.
His Majesty is greatly revered in Thailand and his health is a subject of great national concern.
Earlier surgery in the past little more than one year for lumbar spinal stenosis and a rib fracture leaves the Thai public worried for his well-being.
The team of royal physicians means that the monarch is receiving the best state-of-the-art medical attention that Thailand can offer, together with hopes and prayers of a loving and grateful citizenry. (TNA)

Accomplished Princess
Following is a biography of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana.
Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana was born May 6, 1923, in London, England, as Her Serene Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the only daughter born to Their Royal Highnesses the Prince Father and the Princess Mother.
On her sixth-cycle birthday in 1995, His Majesty the King performed an investiture ceremony, appointing her as Krom Luang, in accordance with ancient tradition, for the first time in the present reign, as Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra. In former days, senior royals were appointed to rule major cities and regions in the name of the king.
The Princess represented His Majesty the King at various functions, and dutifully carries on the noble works initiated by the late Princess Mother.
She paid close attention to all of the projects under her royal patronage, which were extensive and varied, mostly in education, sports, social welfare, medicine, and public health.
As a keen educator, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana realised the importance of basic education, at pre-school and primary levels, for the improvement of the people’s quality of life.
During her trips in the company of the late Princess Mother to remote areas of the country, she took on the task of experimenting with educational tools and toys developed by the Association of University Women Foundation, so that effective educational media for elementary students nationwide could be developed.
The Princess also took up a guest lecturer post with various local universities, focusing on foreign languages and linguistics, especially French. She also sought new methods and theories to improve the teaching of language, and frequently gave advice to teachers of language and literature.
The Princess founded the Association of Teachers of French in Thailand, aimed at improving teaching methods and promoting research into language, art, and culture at all levels and in all disciplines. The Princess served as President of the Association from 1977 to 1981, and was the Honourary President.
Her Royal Highness was a staunch supporter of Thai youth participation in academic Olympiads, in both science and mathematics. She granted the use of her personal funds and the funds from the Princess Mother’s Charity Fund. She also followed up closely on events held in various parts of the world, giving encouragement and constant support.
She also supported several sporting activities for youth.
Continuing with the good works of her royal parents, the Princess accepted under her royal patronage foundations related to social welfare, and public health. She served as Vice President of the Princess Mother’s Charity Fund, Honorary President of the Princess Mother’s Mobile Doctors Foundation, and succeeded the Princess Mother as President of the Siriraj Foundation.
There are other foundations that were also under her royal patronage:
* Cardiac Children’s Foundation, to help cardiac children from poor families, affording them care and treatment by specialists;
* The Princess Mother’s Prosthesis Foundation, set up at the initiative of the late Princess Mother and Princess Galyani Vadhana, to provide artificial limbs for needy amputees. Inexpensive prostheses are manufactured for the purpose;
* Autistic Foundation, set up by the Princess, to take care of autistic children, enabling them to study with other children. Some have even managed to graduate from university;
* The Princess Mother’s Thanyarak Foundation, to create awareness and understanding of breast cancer, “than” being a formal word for “breast.” A Thanyarak Center was set up at Siriraj Hospital as a full-cycle breast cancer center, and
* The Princess Mother’s Mobile Doctors Foundation, with mobile medical units sent out to rural and inaccessible areas. The Princess took the mobile units to those areas herself. Some patients were accepted under the Princess’ royal patronage for medical transfer and treatment in the provinces or Bangkok.
Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana was keen on literature, the arts, culture, and history. On her trips abroad, she always visited archaeological sites and places where she could learn about the world’s heritage. The trips were documented and published as well-written books that serve as excellent references.
Also much appreciated are books such as Busy Fingers on the late Princess Mother’s hobbies, Mother Told Me on the private life of the Princess Mother, Young Royals Juvenile Kings on their young days, and The Princely Postcards, a collection of the Prince Father ’s postcards.
With her steadfastness, and the gratitude shown to benefactors and her royal parents, Her Royal Highness contributed greatly to the country and the royal institution. She was invested with titles and the nation’s highest decorations.
Her academic achievements also earned her high commendations from foreign governments and organisations, such as the Commandeur de l’Ordre National du Merite, presented by the French government, and the Victor Hugo medal, presented by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation.

Festivities to be scrapped from Children's Day
(BangkokPost.com) - Ministry of Education ordered the suspension of all festivities on the annual Children's Day that falls on Jan 12 this year in the light of the death of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana.
Charueyporn Tharanintra, permanent secretary of the Education Ministry, revealed after having discussed with Education Minister Wijit Srisa-arn that the Children's Day will still be held although entertainment activities will not be organised.
Only activities including knowledge contests will be held to celebrate the event.
Activities, which have been held at Sanam Sua Pah in front of the Dusit Palace, will be organised at the field close to the Education Ministry.
The change of venue is because the Royal Household Bureau announced 100-day mourning period for the late Princess, thus organising the event near the palace is not appropriate, Mrs Charueyporn said.

This seems to indicate that the cremation will occur after the 100 days of mourning, but we will hopefully get some clarifying comment from our members:

Website shut down over royal content
Published on January 6, 2008
A website containing content critical of the monarchy was shut down on Friday. The site's Web host was threatened with being closed unless it withdrew the site.
Thanapol Eiwsakul, editor of the Fah Diew Kan political magazine website http://sameskybooks.org/ , told The Nation yesterday it was no longer accessible.
"It was like shutting down a printing house that prints a magazine. This is the price we're paying," said Thanapol, who insisted he always cooperated with the authorities and deleted material considered offensive to the monarchy.
He believed the posting of critical remarks following the death of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana on Wednesday might have led to the shutting down of the site by the Information and Communications Technology Ministry.
Ministry spokespeople were unavailable yesterday.
Some visitors to the site posted critical remarks to the effect that the news media generalised when it said the whole country was in grief following the death of the Princess.
One correspondent expressed refusal to follow the mourning dress code.
"I think we're one of the few sites posting remarks against the monarchy," Thanapol explained.
Reaction was quick at another website, www.prachatai.com , an online alternative newspaper, after it reported the shutdown yesterday. Correspondents both supported and criticised the closing.
Thanapol said he was considering legal action against the ministry and the host company, Internet Service. It sent him an e-mail explaining the site had been shut as a result of offensive content.
He added, however, that he had no faith in the judicial system.
"The interpretation of the law will never side with human rights; it will likely endorse unjust use of power, but we insist on the principle of human rights and that we're innocent and open about expressing critical views. We don't see the government as acting in the open when it pressures private companies," he said.
Thanapol said he had received no warning from the ministry.
Freedom Against Censorship Thailand, a free Internet campaign group, released a statement yesterday saying it believed the closing to be illegal under the Computer Related Crimes Act.
"Such censorship must be by court order only, and no application was made for one. This must be preceded by a letter of inquiry, not immediate closure. Furthermore, should an entire business be shut down because of private-individual posts to its site? Are the other websites hosted on the same server merely unimportant collateral damage?" the group said.

No surprise at all for thew case of Fah Diaw Kan (Sameskybook.com) and Prachatai (prachatia.com) since many ROyalists have FED UP with these left wing website who have the nature of anti-Monarchy ....
Furthermore, many columnists have drawn a parallel between the Regime chanign in Nepal and the current Political turmoils in Thailand ... The colunists in Post Today has pointed out that the participation of ANti-Monarchy demostration by the left wign Thai intellectuals is a SURE sign that those highbroiw profess have planned the conspiracy AGAINST Monachy for sicne they were highschool students ... durign political turmoils betwen 1973-1976 ... Even after becoming professors in universities, they NEVER give up their ideology of conspiracies ....
They even keep braniwahsing students in Social Scence courses so they can possess the new "Red Guards" to seize the country once His Majesty has gone to meet Princess Mother, Prince Mahidol, King Anadamahidol, and Princess Kalayaniwatthana ...

NEWS HEADLINE :. Culture Ministry preparing chariots for HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana
Minister of Culture Khunying Khaisri Sri-arun (ไขศรี ศรีอรุณ) met with members of the Ministry of Cultures Department of Fine Arts to discuss and plan the preparation of three ceremonial chariots that will be used in the funeral procession of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana to a specially constructed funeral pyre at Sanam Luang. The Fine Arts department has been tasked with readying the three chariots for the ceremony, including cleaning and restoring the vehicles which have been used in such ceremonies throughout the decades.
The three chariots Phra Maha Pichai Ratcharot (พระมหาพิชัยราชรถ), Wechayan Ratcharot (เวชยันตรราชรถ) and Ratcharot Noi (ราชรถน้อย) are currently being kept at the National Museum. The Fine Arts department also must ready a casket to be used in the ceremony.
Khunying Khaisri will report the Fine Arts department’s progress to the Office of the Prime Minister which will then inform His Majesty the King.

Govt to use Bt150 million to build crematorium for HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana
The Fine Arts Department is seeking a budget of at least Bt150 million for the construction of a royal crematorium and surrounding structures for the royal funeral of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana.
The elder sister of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej passed away at the age of 84 last Wednesday.
"The budget should be between Bt150 million and Bt200 million," the department's director general, Grienggrai Sumpatchalit, said Monday.
He said the cost estimate was based on the Bt165 million spent for the HRH the Princess Mother's royal crematorium and surrounding structures in 1995.
According to Grienggrai, the design for the royal crematorium for the king's elder sister is a new draft based on old traditions and ancient beliefs about three worlds (earth, hell and heaven). Surrounding structures will include pavilions, toilets and entertainment halls.
"The construction will take at least four months," Grienggrai said, adding that between 300 and 400 workers will be needed.
Arvudh Ngernchuklin, who chairs the Fine Arts Department's panel in charge of the royal cremation construction, disclosed that the draft design of the royal crematorium for the Princess was now ready to be forwarded to His Majesty for consideration.
Culture Minister Khunying Khasiri Sriarun said the draft would be presented today to the committee organising the Princess's royal funeral. Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont heads the committee.
"The government will then present the draft to His Majesty," she said.
Khaisri met Monday with His Majesty's Deputy Principal Private Secretary Thanpuying Putrie Viravaidya to discuss the necessary preparations for the royal funeral.
She added that relevant officials would be urgently deployed to clean and renovate chariots to be used in the royal crematorium. [See previous post.]
Meanwhile, the National Archives of Thailand was now compiling information on the royal cremation for the Princess.
According to Putrie, information from all media, including newspapers and TV broadcasts, will be collected. Documents from the Royal Household Bureau, announcements about the Princess's illness and treatment at Siriraj Hospital, and details about the royal funeral would be compiled.

BMA requests all districts to cancel entertaining activities during Valentine’s
Deputy Governor of Bangkok Phutthiphong Punnakan (พุทธิพงษ์ ปุณณกันต์) reports that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has requested all districts to cancel entertaining activities during this year’s Valentine’s Day due to the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana.
However, the deputy governor says other activities can be held to celebrate the Valentine’s Day.
Mr Phutthiphong says he expects that there will be less Valentine’s Day activities this year and some districts have informed that they will arrange no activity. However, other districts especially the Bang Rak (บางรัก) has affirmed that it will organize activities on February 14th as many couples wish to register for a marriage license this day.
In addition, the deputy governor says the Bang Rak district will also arrange exhibitions to commemorate HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana.

I would be grateful if you can clarify for me .. which one actually contains the body of Princess Kaliyaneewattana? Is it the octagonal urn or the rectangular coffin?
In the past, the Octagonally urn-shape coffin would be used for carrying the body to the king/prince or the queen/princess durign the cremation. The last time the Octagonally urn-shape coffin has been actually used for carryign the body is the cremation of Queen Rambhaibanni on 9 April 1985.
However, the change has come since the day Princess Mother passed away on 18 July 1995 -> the retangular coffin is the one that actually carrying the body of Princess Mother ... and now Princess Kalayaniwatthana .... The Octagonally urn-shape coffine has become a decoration instead.

Now, you have Chance in your life time to take a photo of crematorium until Nov 30, 2008 before being removed for other uses.
Hmm, removed for other uses........ does that mean they will dismantle and re-erect it elsewhere?

Never forget that in the past the wooden structure of crematorium complex had been used to build hte buildings of Siriraj Hospital in 1888-1889.
However, the metal parts (steel structure) inside that crematorium complex can be recycled for otehr applications.

I read somewhere, that the Meru of the cremation of Mae Fa Luang (Srinagarindra) back in 1995 was dismanteled and rebuilt in the backyard of Wat Pathum Wanaram. I never went there to check it. Is that true? Is it still there?
And does in the meantime somebody know what will happen to Princess Galayani's Meru?

Yes - that part of the Crematorium complex for Princess Motehr went into the museum at Wat prathumwanaram and the Crematorium complex for pricness Kalayaniwatthan may follow the next.
Now, even the visiting period has been extended to 11 PM at night for the Crematorium complex, the officers from Palace Household Office will have to take until 1 AM to move the last visitors of the day out due to the popular demands.
The Crematorium Complex will be dismantled on 00:59 of 1 December 2008 and to et all cleared up by midnight of 4 December 2008

After 9 PM, the exhibition closed - aand the crematorium complex is abotu to be dismantled at 00:59 of 1 December 2008 - a few hours later.
The small trees will be given to the people at 8 AM of 1 Dec 2008 -> giving one tree per person .... and givign to 200 persons at oen time ... while the big trees will be returned back since they are leased trees.
Mr. Rattanawut Watcharothai (the one who run the exhibition) siad this exhibition is truely successful. The exhibition committedd expected that there will be 5 Million visitors from 18 to 30 Nov 2008 but the actual number is now 10.1 Million Visitors. The first week of exhibition is already over 2 million visitors. Even thogu the annoucement isadi the exhibition will be closed at 9 PM, it is expected to be extended to Midnight ....
Hmm, removed for other uses........ does that mean they will dismantle and re-erect it elsewhere?
After dismantling the crematorium complex, some of them will eb preserved in The National Museum.
