Construction on historical Lao-Viet museum begins in Savannakhet
The construction of new historical museum recounting the co-cooperative victory of Laos and Vietnam during Indochina war officially began Monday in Dong village of Xepon district, Savannakhet province.
The Supervisor of Ideology and Cultural Affairs, Mr Samane Vinhaket, lays the foundation stone for the new museum.
The stone-laying ceremony was attended by the Supervisor of Ideology and Cultural Affairs, Mr Samane Vinhaket; the Deputy
Prime Minister and Defence Minister, Major General Duangchay Phichit, the Information and Culture Minister, Mr Mounkeo Oraboun and Savannakhet's Governor, Mr Vilayvanh Phomkhe.
The site is locate d on Road No 9, at a point that links Laos with the Ho Chi Minh route of Vietnam .
“We've been planning to construct the museum for many years, but this month, our plans were realised. We expect to finish construction by 2010,” said the Director General of the Museum and Archaeology Department of the Information and Culture Ministry, Dr Thongsa Xayavongkhamdy.
He added that once the construction is complete, the museum will display various battle memorabilia items, such as tanks, guns, bombs and other weapons. It will also feature battle photos of soldiers and local people, as well as speeches from local history experts who have a first-hand appreciation of the fighting that occurred in the Indochina war, especially in Xepon district.
His department and the Department of Information and Culture of Savannakhet would cooperate with each other to find and display all the relevant historical photos, he said yesterday.
“The museum aims to commemorate the morale of the devoted soldiers from the combined Lao-Viet side that jointly fought the same aggressor, especially during the Lam Son battle, the site of an offensive campaign in 1971,” said the Deputy Director of the Information and Culture Department of Savannakhet, Mr Khampong Mangsouphab.
He said it would also be an important tourist site for tourists who travel on road No 9 of the East-West route from Vietnam to Laos and Thailand .
This ceremony also marked the celebration of two historical events in relations between Laos and Vietnam – the 30 th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation and the 45 th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Laos and Vietnam .
