Does PTV (People's Television) have a website?

Did a few searches and can't find anything. Also took another look at the photos and nothing on them either. This report says they have been in some form denied an internet connection by CAT Telecom.
So, reports says that this practice run (and also the earlier media introduction session) came complete with TRT sloganizing. If they really want to make the coupmakers look truly ridiculous, they are going to have to do much better than singing the praises of the Prime Minister and party that stomped the once-popular 1997 constitution to death. One doesn't expect balance from a junta, but one does kind of expect it from a station that bills itself as 'People's TV'.
And talking about fiasco, I hear that Samak Suntaravet is also expected to turn up and show his support for the channel sometime soon.

PTV says 'CAT attack' ruined debut
PTV executives prepare for their debut at a studio in Lat Phrao, but the station failed to broadcast. PTV says CAT Telecom refused to provide an Internet link. CAT says PTV did not apply for the service.
Yesterday's inaugural broadcast of PTV, the new satellite television station, turned out to be a dress rehear-sal as the station management failed to secure Internet access to relay the programme from Bangkok to an up-link station in Hong Kong.
PTV management blamed CAT Telecom for refusing to grant the Internet link while the government-controlled service provider claimed it had never received an application for its service.
Despite the technical glitch, station executives turned out in full force for the inaugural ceremony to greet 300 well-wishers and supporters of the Thai Rak Thai Party.
The executives included Veera Musigapong, Jatuporn Promphan and Nattawut Saikua. After three hours of failed attempts to get Internet access, Veera decided on a half-hour demonstration. The session was recorded so that CDs could be distributed to the public.
At the end of the session, the royal anthem was played amid applause and shouts of "Thai Rak Thai Fight!".
Nattawut told reporters he was disappointed that the authorities were treating supporters of the former ruling party as second-class citizens. "PTV management has fully complied with the laws, yet the broadcast is being blocked without justification," he said. He added that a PTV satellite dish for Thaicom broadcast transmission had gone missing and was presumed stolen.
Jatuporn alleged that General Saprang Kalanamitr, junta leader and chairman of CAT Telecom, was behind the attempts to block his station's broadcast.
"Although the inaugural broadcast was blocked by authorities, management will fight on and not back down even if they take our lives," Veera said.
CAT Telecom senior executive vice president Jirachai Srijohn said PTV had failed to request Internet access. "We could not lease the Internet access because we did not receive a [request] letter from PTV," he said.

I check this site and it works!
great detective work! thanks!
This looks like a fairly cynical way for Sanoh Thienthong to remind people of his annual birthday extravagansa and his new party. Almost the opening shot of the election, I suspect:
Veteran politician Snoh Thienthong dropped a bombshell yesterday by claiming that an unnamed person was funding public anti-coup rallies.
The Pracharaj Party leader said he had information about the matter and would "tell all" during the celebration of his 73rd birthday tomorrow at the Alpine golf course.
Allegations have abounded that ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra provided financial support to the organisers of the banned PTV station, who organised anti-government rallies at Sanam Luang last Friday and at the City Hall grounds yesterday.
Snoh, who is credited with being the main driving force behind the rise of Banharn Silapa-archa, Chavalit Yongchaiyudh and Thaksin Shinawatra to the premiership, yesterday attended a religious ceremony to mark the inauguration of the Matchima Group of politicians led by Somsak Thepsuthin. Representatives of major political parties attended the event.

BMA and Metropolitan Police to obstruct elephants to travel to city to demonstrate
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Metropolitan Police set up checkpoints to prevent elephants coming in numbers to rally in Bangkok.
99 elephants are reportedly planning to travel into the city to join the May 30th rally, a date scheduled to issue the court’s verdict of party dissolution case. Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayothin (อภิรักษ์ โกษะโยธิน) has urged all state authorities to monitor situation closely.
Metropolitan Police Bureau Commissioner, Pol Lt Gen Adisorn Nonsri (อดิศร นนทรีย์), has asked for cooperation from Interior Ministry to help prohibit removing of elephants from its areas.
Meanwhile, mahouts have been requested not to bring their elephants to Bangkok.

Jakrapop Penkair says the coup was wrong, and can't get over why those he admires at The Nation are incapable of opposing the coup. What he tries to forget is his obsequious interviews of Thaksin Shinawatra in the past on issues that really required hard-questioning by anyone who says they want to get the elite off the backs of ordinary Thais.
I want to know just what he thinks Thaksin Shinawatra was capable of delivering to ordinary people when that man has always been so obviously an unrepentent member of the establishment.
Just what was it about Thaksin that made it so necessary for Jakrapop to become a TRT party spokesman?
Is a man of such obvious intellect (and self-reported care for the population) totally incapable of becoming a founding member of a truly-representative socialist party or similar?
What was the need to join and participate in a party that is so obviously bankrolled for the sake of one clan and its business associates?
Having heard so many eloquent politicians here in Thailand (Thaksin included) who went on to dupe the population big time, it is obvious to me that it is possible here to talk of one's care for society while at the same time entirely serving one's own interests. I can only conclude that Jakrapop is another sweet-talking hypocrite with a massive ambition and ego:

Just a few years ago Jakrapop Penkair was a model celebrity - thriving on a good blend of knowledge and sweet personality. Not anymore.
Listen to how the smooth-talking man, now the most charismatic leader of the pro-Thaksin and anti-coup campaign, has transformed himself over just the last few months. In an interview with our reporter, Kornchanok Raksaseri.
He attacked virtually everyone, from the president of the Privy Council to rival politicians to members of the media.

Anti-government rally at Sanam Luang - 10:00pm, June 15, 2007
It was a large crowd--perhaps 15,000. By 10:00pm the crowd was thinning out. A speaker read out a long and loud harangue against General Saprang. Then there was another loud and sarcastic speech about how Thaksin was the only Prime Minister for the nation. The speaker brought up other options such as Sonthi, Chuan, Abhisit, Somkit, Banharn and skewered each one for being an aloof politician not connected to the people. All the speakers kept repeating the charge that Sonthi was a liar.
The crowd was enthusiastic, vocal, and extremely attentive, cheering and calling out in laughter.

2Bangkok.com editor Ron Morris notes: Few taxi drivers wanted to go to Sanam Luang after government warnings for them to stay away. A taxi driver who was willing to go was listening to "92.2 Democracy Radio." The volume was adjusted from the taxi's radio, but the radio did not seem to be on. The station was crystal clear and without advertising. I got the feeling the taxi had some kind of alternate receiver installed to receive the broadcast. The speaker on the radio was warning that it was dangerous for the country if Thaksin did not return as Prime Minister. When the taxi driver saw me taking notes, he got nervous, turned off the station and refused to turn it on or speak about it.

I don't see this as a struggle for democracy. I see this as a war against the aristocracy. - The word 'war' conflicts with your later protestations of peaceful protest. Is it going to be more like 'The War on Drugs', in which Thaksin and elements of the dreaded elite snuffed out small dealers (without any form of justice) and thus wittingly/unwittingly prevented any of them being involved in prosecutions against the real kingpins of the trade (such as their own kind). Hardly a good precedent for the way Jakrapop intends to carry out his war! He practically condoned this barbarity when he went to work for the Thaksin government.
This interview made it clear to me that Jakrapop sees himself as a future PM. If you believe that Thaksin might be using the PTV crew, you might want to do a double-take. This interview suggests that Jakrapop deliberately ignores the seemy side of Thaksin in order to continue to receive the funding that could eventually propel him to the corridors of power. Thus, Jakrapop could be seen as using Thaksin. Shame he will achieve power and be tainted by the funds of corruption before he even starts!:
I couldn't breathe the air of dictatorship. - So why did he join a Thaksin government which was so definitely run in a dictatorial manner? Thaksin's stupidity also brought this junta down on our heads. Thaksin could have avoided this crisis, if his motives hadn't been so obviously dictated by his own greed. Hell, the guy had practically the entire elite rooting for him in his first term. They even went so far as to let him escape scot-free from flagrant tax avoidance on Day 1.
We are now planning to make our programming here and send it to the United States for Thai communities to see there. In July we should be having more revenues from the American side of the business. ..... We produce a show here at lower cost and we air in the US. We charge advertising at American rates so we are profitable, but its not happening yet.
So it's not exactly Thaksin TV, but it probably uses at least some of his money.

Thai people have been very divisive. ;-) ..... Some people like Khun Thaksin very much. Some people can't stand him. That situation calls for a civil war, right? ..... but if it has to lead to a civil war, I'm ready!
I would like people to know khun Thaksin is not a perfect man. He has flaws. He did some mistakes. So he couldn't find a better leader? I would suggest that it was loads of easy Thaksin money that prevented Jakrapop looking any further than the end of his nose.
They are not my enemies. I see them as people who don't understand the real world.
Aristocrats are enemies to democrats.
People behind CNS, like Khun Prem should be kicked out. These are the people who really destroy democracy. These are people who the King should fire. khun Prem destroys democracy by not acknowledging the people's will. The plotting of assassination against Khun Thaksin .... khun Prem has been a good leader, but after a while he went off the course and turned out to be very imbalanced in the way he judges his enemies. You can't expect a person of 87 years old to be sane and balanced all the time. ..... [Khun Prem] was a good Prime Minister.
Why would the opinionated Jakrapop want to continue playing second fiddle to a man he himself labels as 'flawed'. He can hardly be surprised if some people suspect he wishes to ride to power on Thaksin's funding.
We can not khun Aphisit and Khun Barnharn run the country. Khun Barnharn is too stupid. Khun Aphisit is too inexperienced. The two are not pro-democracy. I don't trust them.
Khun Thaksin is a good leader, but he has to correct some of his weaknesses. ..... And he has to tell some of his friends and cousins to stay clean.
khun Thaksin is not a greedy person, but he has been an ambitious person.
We should ask how the likes of Khun Aphisit and Khun Barnharn survive. ..... Khun Thaksin is already rich, so we don't need to ask him. The same muddled thinking that the rich are incorruptible.

It's a lousy election. I wouldn't run for it. It's a low class election ..... Why shouldn't people ask for the '97 Constitution back? It's a lousy constitution drafted by Prasong Soonsiri, who is a lousy person.:D :) How much did Jakrapop's 'flawed' hero ever respect the '97 Constitution either?
If the CNS is ousted but Khun Prem remains in power we will have a coup. Khun Prem is a coup leader. Khun Prem has to be ousted.
[Thaksin] is a very normal person. khun Chuan is an abnormal person. Khun Aphisit is abnormal. These are fake people.
I'm fed up with the 'Poo Dee' I want to get rid of all of them.

Politician proves the adage: like father like son
By making important enemies across the board in one fell swoop, Jakrapob Penkair seems to have duplicated Thaksin Shinawatra's style of politicking down to a T: making everyone else look bad so that you will be put automatically in a different light. It's as simple as that.
By describing himself as "well-educated", Jakapop exuded the air of self-importance just like his former boss did during his heyday ("I'm a PhD, remember"). One wonders if, by uttering such words, one would still look wise even if one behaves in quite the opposite fashion.
By calling important people names and treating people who contributed to the country since before he was born as bad, stupid and inexperienced and shower praise only on his former boss, Jakrapob tells us so much about his philosophy and politics.
In answer to the question of what impressed him most about the ousted premier, Jakrapob said very succinctly: "He gave birth to my political career". Now we all know what made him tick. The driving force behind this man's political struggle is as grand as his own words suggested.

Poor Jakrapop! My heart almost bleeds for him. He obviously can't find a killer excuse that would destroy the persistent notion that he is Thaksin's paid rabble-rouser. All he has to do to let himself off the hook is to encourage his PTV colleagues to protest against the junta's destruction of democracy without resorting to hero worship of Thaksin. The need for immense social change is something much more important than any one individual - especially a wealthy Prime Minister who could not be bothered to run a transparent government. The fact that Jakrapop does not highlight and revere those who have long tried to bring changes to Thai society speaks volumes. Obviously, Thaksin has more worth than a whole pile of real grassroots activists to Jakrapop. Wonder why?

The Bangkok Post article on Jakkrapop Penkair is no longer available, but there is this slightly longer quote.
A Satit Kaset school teacher who taught Mr Jakrapob from Mathayom 4 to 6 said he was "different" from his peers.
"He was very good at acting when assigned to speak in front of the class, but his ideas and points of view were not so sharp," the teacher recalled. He won a number of awards in school-level debates. "Jakrapob is a good public speaker, but not a good thinker."
http://bangkokpundit.blogspot.com/2007/06/not-good-thinker.html#8679055594209112419
But as Bangkok Pundit points out, that the local education system may not be a particularly capable judge of its students thinking abilities.
But BP also brings up another quote (a 2001 conference, at John Hopkins University) which is perhaps much more appropriate to the discussion of Jakkrapop's alleged hypocrisy. JP was then Vice President of the Thai Broadcast Journalists Association. He was sharing the stage with Kavi Chongkittavorn of The Nation - one of those people JP tells us he still admires but can't understand why they have grown so critical of Thaksin.
There is an overwhelming sense of apprehension within the media that they have lost the power they once had to set the agenda of government and society; worse, that this power had effectively been seized by Prime Minister Thaksin himself. The media are now held hostage to the manipulation of Thaksin. Thaksin employs sophisticated spin tactics to weed out discontent and to shape public opinion.
Furthermore, he has centralized the government’s public affairs funds so that he can more effectively monitor and control public relations. What is more alarming, however, is that interference is no longer restricted to state-owned media. Even journalists of privately owned print media are feeling pressure from their proprietors and editors. The absence of critical political coverage—something utterly unusual for the normally aggressive Thai newspapers—demonstrates the extent of the "control" the present administration has over the private media. Through strategic planning Thaksin has devised ways to confuse, segregate and control journalists.
He has successfully overpowered journalists not through brutal coercion but instead through cooptation. He has charmed journalists by maintaining friendly relationships and doing whatever he can to facilitate their work.
Slowly but gradually journalists have lost the ability to ask the prime minister tough questions, in fear of biting the hand that feeds them. Moreover, Thaksin has also been able to garner an incredible degree of support from the Thai public. This has made the public more hostile towards the media if they should cover the prime minister in a negative light
JP has obviously lost the ability to ask the ex-PM tough questions himself. I can understand why someone might change their thinking about a politician, but JP has called the ex-PM flawed. The real question is why JP has become such an ally of the PM. If a person is not impressed with the current state of politics, wouldn't it be better to look for or create better long-term political alternatives?

A MAN OBSESSED
Jakrapob Penkair's unflagging loyalty to Thaksin Shinawatra has upset even some of his closest friends
Story by KULTIDA SAMABUDDHI
Jakrapob Penkair addresses demonstrators who braved the rain at the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship rally at Sanam Luang, which started on May 26.
After 31 days under rain and sun at the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship rally, 40-year-old news analyst-turned-politician Jakrapob Penkair was still fully fresh and fit.
His voice was clear and his face beaming.
"Tired? Not at all. I've never felt as sturdy as this before. This is the most joyful moment of my life," Mr Jakrapob said, sitting relaxed in his air-conditioned Toyota Sport Rider waiting for the next round of speeches on Sunday night.
"The only thing that bothers me now is that I have no chance to swim. I like swimming very much," he said, "but the fact that I've had to change my safe-house everyday for the past month makes it impossible for me to go swimming regularly as I do when I stay at my condominium."
It is his conviction that a person who does what he likes and fights for his beliefs will always be happy and energetic.
When asked what he was fighting for, the close aide of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra replied: "I am fighting for democracy."
"And Mr Thaksin is the most vivid symbol of democracy," he added, "because he came to power through a general election under a democratic system.
"So, I believe that protecting Mr Thaksin is also protecting Thai democracy."
The PTV executive said leading the DAAD rally had added colour to his life.
"I have lived a very simple life, always acted politely and stayed in a safe environment. This is a very good chance for me to taste the real excitement."
He is addicted to politics _ outspoken politician Samak Sundaravej, a former Bangkok governor, is a role model _ and says he is now ready to take a risk by choosing sides.
"And by doing this I earn a lot of criticism and new foes, but I'm ready to face up to this," he said, referring to his devotion to the fight for the reinstatement of Mr Thaksin and his leading role in the anti-coup rally.
His strength came partly from the support he received from family members, all of them strong supporters of Mr Thaksin and the Thai Rak Thai party.
The young-blood politician said he made his own decisions, each political step of the way.
"I don't have a personal mentor. When I need help, I turn to textbooks, news articles and academic papers," said Mr Jakrapob, better known among his friends and close aides as "Ake".
"I study books and articles by a range of writers and thinkers _ among them Jean-Jacques Rousseau, John Stuart Mill, Pridi Banomyong, Jit Phumisak and even anti-Thaksin academics such as Nidhi Eowseewong and Kasien Techapira," he said.
Since he began playing a leading role within DAAD over the last month, the two books he has been reading are The Private Life of Chairman Maoand George Orwell's political novel1984.
Born in 1967 into a middle-class family of five, Mr Jakrapob studied at Satit Kaset school for 12 years before entering Chulalongkorn University's faculty of political science.
Mr Jakrapob furthered studies with a master's and doctorate degrees in economics at Johns Hopkins University.
After returning to Thailand, the politically-obsessed man worked briefly for the Charoen Pokphand Group before moving to the Foreign Affairs Ministry's information department.
While at the department, he also worked as a news analyst for some TV and radio stations, but real advancement came when he served as the government's anchorman reporting the Apec meeting in 2003.
Mr Jakrapob was appointed the government spokesman later the same year. Since then he has never strayed far from Mr Thaksin.
A Satit Kaset school teacher who taught Mr Jakrapob from Mathayom 4 to 6 said he was "different" from his peers.
"He looked much older than the other students. The boy always acted like he was a great professor," said the teacher who asked not to be named.
He wore thick eye-glasses, his school uniform was too big for him and his hair was always neatly set with thick wax.
"Jakrapob was always being teased by his friends because of his weird appearance," said the 62-year-old teacher.
"He was very good at acting when assigned to speak in front of the class, but his ideas and points of view were not so sharp," the teacher recalled. He won a number of awards in school-level debates. "Jakrapob is a good public speaker, but not a good thinker."
A Foreign Affairs official who is one of Mr Jakrapob's best friends but declined to be named described him as "easy-going and sincere, although he has very few close friends".
"We love him because he is honest to his thoughts. If he likes someone or something, he will readily make a sacrifice," he said.
The close friend conceded that Mr Jakrapob's mission as a staunch supporter of Mr Thaksin had upset some of his friends.
"When we meet, we try not to talk about politics," he said.
"However, his political standpoint will not affect our friendship. His friends will still love him as he is."
Although the DAAD demonstration has fizzled out over the past two weeks, Mr Jakrapob said he did not think he and the other PTV executives who spearhead the rally will lose the struggle.
But the form of the battle might change, from street rally to an information war.
"We will continue our fight, whatever form the war takes," he said.
And if the situation turns violent and "this country has no place for me to stand, I might apply for a job as a political lecturer in a foreign university," he added.

Veera Musikapong also has a house in Phattalung Province. Apparently the Songkhla mob had a plan afoot today to demonstrate outside the Phattalung house. Veera got wind of the plan and decided to do an overnight bunk.
Difficult to really believe that the protestors have done much more than block the main gate:
Protest at Prem's house
BangkokPost.com, dpa
Thousands of anti-coup protesters on Sunday marched on the home of statesman Prem Tinsulanonda and demanded his resignation as president of the Privy Council.
About 10,000 members of the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) marched from Sanam Luang to Gen Prem's residence.
The protesters were met by pro-Prem supporters who had lined up outside his house. Both sides were sporting yellow shirts as supporters of His Majesty the King. There was no violence.
Gen Prem, a former army commander-in-chief who was prime minister between 1979 to 1988, has been accused by the UDD as being the mastermind of the Sept 19 military coup that ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.
The UDD, a loose coalition of anti-coup groups, charged that Gen Prem abused his position at the Privy Council to interfere with Thai politics.
Popular opinion continues to be divided on whether Mr Thaksin, who was prime minister from 2001 to 2006, was a benefit or a bane to Thailand's 75-year-old search for democracy, which has been derailed by numerous military coups.
The tension between the pro-Thaksin and anti-Thaksin camps is likely to intensify over coming months as Thailand gears up for a referendum on Aug 19 to decide the fate of the country's 18th constitution. A general election is expected to be held in either November or December, but that could depend on the constitutional referendum.
Besides staging anti-junta protests, the UDD has also launched a campaign to get the people to vote against the draft constitution written by a junta-appointed committee, arguing that it would weaken the political party system and grant amnesty to the coup makers.
"If we can get people to vote no that will mean there will be no more coups," said Sant Hatthirat, a pro-democracy activist and advisor to the UDD.
The UDD hopes Thailand will revert to the 1997 constitution, which was revoked by the junta when it staged the Sept 19 coup.

Protesters move to Privy Council President's house
BANGKOK, JULY 22 (TNA) -- Anti-government protesters led by the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD) broke through police barricades Sunday afternoon during their move from Sanam Luang to the residence of Privy Council President and Senior Statesman Prem Tinsulanonda.
Minor violence erupted during the failed blockage at the Makkhawan Bridge when demonstrators threw assorted objects at some 2,000 police and security personnel and managed to remove some steel barricades before dumping them into a nearby canal.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol. Lt-Gen. Adisorn Nonsee said arrest warrants will be sought on Monday for eight core leaders of DAAD, based on existing photos and TV footage. Some demonstrators will be prosecuted for physically assaulting state officials and vandalising state property.
Speaking through loudspeakers on the back of a truck, DAAD core leader Veera Musikapong stated that the protesters will continue their demonstration until Gen. Prem resigns from his post.
The traffic around Gen. Prem's house came to a stand-still amid an afternoon rain shower while negotiations were underway.
The DAAD -- comprised of former members of the now dissolved Thai Rak Thai (TRT) party -- earlier condemned the privy councilor for his alleged support for last September's coup that overthrew former TRT leader and then Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Gen. Prem is a former prime minister and army chief.
In May 2007, a tribunal constitution dissolved TRT for electoral fraud with their 111 executives including Mr. Veera himself being banned from politics for five years. (TNA)-E002

Protesters clash with police outside Prem's residence
Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda was barricaded inside his house late last night as anti-coup demonstrators threw a barrage of rocks, chairs and debris into the compound.
In the first major outbreak of violence since the anti-coup movement started in September, protesters from the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DADD) clashed with police outside Prem's home.
Several thousands of people kept up the barrage of missiles for about three hours as Prem was reportedly taking shelter inside. Television footage showed a number of people were injured, but police late last night released no figures, but some reports said an officer had his leg broken.
Protesters belonging to the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DADD) yesterday clashed with police in a melee outside the residence of Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda, resulting in several injuries.
It is the first major violence since the anti-coup movement started last September.
The clash began at around 9.05pm when a number of riot policemen climbed onto a truck to arrest DADD protest leaders who were speaking against the junta.
The policemen retreated without arresting anyone after the numerous protestors on the truck pushed them back down. The officers also came under a heavy barrage of missiles thrown at them by members of the roughly 5,000-strong protest.
The officers were then pushed further back behind their own barricades, which were later seized by the protesters.
The protestors later destroyed a nearby police box and vowed to stay at the site until Prem resigned.
The protesters clashed with police at Makkhawan Bridge yesterday morning and later charged through a police blockade near the headquarters of the First Infantry Division by driving a municipal garbage truck they had seized through the police line.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lt-General Adisorn Nonsee said the protest's leaders would be charged, some with assaulting officers and others with destroying government property.

Update: Police try to break up protest
Bangkok (dpa) - Thai police on Sunday attempted to disperse thousands of anti-coup protesters demonstrating outside former Thai prime minister Prem Tinsulanonda's house, demanding the senior statesman's resignation as the top advisor to the country's monarch.
Sunday afternoon more than 6,000 members of the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) marched from Sanam Luang - the Royal Grounds - to Prem's residence to demand he resign as chairman of the privy council to Thailand's much-revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
After allowing the protesters to voice their demands, police attempted to disperse the demonstration at 10:30 p.m. by using pepper spray and threatening to arrest the ringleaders of the UDD, a loose coalition of opponents to the September 19, 2006, military coup.

As the violence began to wane at about midnight, chairman of the Council for National Security General Sonthi Boonyaratglin said there was no need to impose a state of emergency.
"The behaviour of the demonstrators today gives us some idea of what to do in terms of legal action," he said.
"Tomorrow we will have a meeting with security agencies about tonight's events."
Just before midnight, the protesters moved away from Prem's house and headed towards Sanam Luang. Police said they were back in full control of the situation.
Observers said the protesters began to move away when rumours spread that the Army was preparing to move in to break up the protest after midnight.
The surrounding streets of Thewes district were littered with mounds of garbage, smashed bottles, rocks, broken chairs, and other debris. A Bangkok metropolitan Administration vehicle was damaged. An Army recreation club nearby had all of its windows broken.

Prasong blames Thaksin for clash
(BangkokPost.com) - Prasong Soonsiri has encouraged authorities to take legal action against anti-government demonstrators who clashed with police outside Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda's Sri Sao Thewes residence on Sunday night.
The President of the Constitution Drafting Committee insisted that the protesters provoked the clashes which resulted in dozens of security officers and demonstrators being hurt.
Sqn-Ldr Prasong was also quick to suggest that ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra may have been behind Sunday night's incident by providing financial backing for the demonstrators.
"He is probably responsible for supporting the clash and he won't stop here," the former intelligence chief warned. "That's why I'm urging police officers to hand out severe punishments to those responsible to deter others from doing the same again in the future."
He also accused Sunday's demonstrators of using slanderous language during public speeches and of unnecessary use of foul language.

Anti-coup leaders: Arrest us
Anti-coup leaders have dared the police to arrest them en masse at Sanam Luang ground in bid to intensify their sustained movement against the military junta, following Sunday's incident outside the residence of Privy Councillor president Gen. Prem Tinsulanonda in which dozens of demonstrators and policemen were injured.
The anti-coup leaders held a press conference attended by local and foreign newsmen to accuse the police of having provoked the violence and assailed the protesters during a tumultuous, late-night "gathering" outside the home of Gen. Prem, who has been alleged to having orchestrated last year's military coup staged by the Council for National Security which toppled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and repeatedly urged by the protesters to step down as chief privy councillor.
A videotape was shown during the press conference on Sunday's brawls, in which the protesters hurled objects at the policemen who fired tear gas and sprayed pepper at them.
In addition to the raising of the foreign media's attention, the anti-coup leaders also planned to call on the United Nations to take into account the alleged suppression of the demonstrators by the authorities.
They suspected a number of soldiers had disguised themselves as policemen involved in the clashes in which more than 70 demonstrators and nearly 30 policemen were injured.
Weng Tojirakarn, an anti-coup movement leaders for whom an arrest warrants has been issued, dared police to arrest him and his colleagues, following Sunday's clashes between the demonstrators and policemen outside the home of Gen. Prem.
Natthawut Saikua, another anti-coup leader, said he would not resist arrest or seek bail, but would prefer to be detained behind bars rather than live in an undemocratic environment. He said the injured demonstrators would file a petition at the Crime Suppression Division Tuesday against the police with whom they had clashed at Gen. Prem's residence Sunday.
Jakraphob Penkair confirmed the anti-coup movement would continue to fight against the CNS led by army chief Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin.(TNA)

Anti-coup protesters blame police for clash
Published on July 24, 2007
Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD) leader Weng Tojirakarn said Sunday night's violence at an anti-coup rally were precipitated by police use of tear-gas.
Skirmishes broke out as demonstrators attempted to reach the residence of Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda after marching from Sanam Luang at noon.
An alliance march last month with the same objective was halted by police near the councillor's residence. "We understood police would send representatives to talk with us to control the situation. They did not," he said.
He said there had been no suggestion of violence until 9pm, when about a thousand police commandos attempted to take protest leaders into custody.
The commandos' action caused tempers to fray, he said. Some demonstrators became angry and broke through police barricades.
The situation got out of control when police used tear-gas to disperse protesters, Weng said.
Weng said protest leaders were unable to control some marchers and had asked police to arrest those that damaged property.
The melee broke up and headed back to Sanam Luang after leaders learned the Army had sent soldiers and would use weapons to disperse the crowd.
"As soon as we discovered the military might use guns we thought it was not safe, so we went back to Sanam Luang," he said.
The DAAD yesterday held a press briefing to call for international human rights organisations to condemn and take action against the police's suppression of the anti-coup protest.
Natthawut Saikua, another anti-coup leader, said the DAAD was gathering evidence to show that police assaulted protesters and would file a complaint on Tuesday.

Or perhaps it has degenerated to the extent that their personal profit has become far more important than the ideology?

Message from Jakrapob Penkair
My assistant and good friend Oley, who has been associated with me for the past several years, was kidnapped last night by 4 men and currently held against his will at an unknown location, reportedly outside Bangkok. After the incident involving the use of pepper spray, tears gas and other arms agias innocent protesters, this incident is like rubbing salt into wound. For the people aspiring for the return of democracy. I urge you to join me in condemning this act of cowardice and awareness so that Oley will be released and healthy at the earliest.

A long Thaksin arm?
(TNA)
A connection between outsted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and last Sunday's violent anti-coup protests is highly possible, Thailand's junta leader Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin thinks.
"Based on an analysis of their preparation process, we are fairly sure that there is a connection between Mr. Thaksin and the violent protests," the Council for National Security (CNS) chairman said on Tuesday in an exclusive interview with Modernine's morning news programme.
However, during the TV Channel 9 broadcast he did not confirm wide speculation that Mr Thaksin was the main financial supporter for the protest.
"There have been many news reports suggesting that the former PM provided them with financial assistance," Gen Sonthi said, "but there has not been any confirmation."
Violence erupted last Sunday when anti-coup protesters clashed with police in front of the Bangkok residence of Privy Councilor president and Senior Statesman Prem Tinsulanonda.
The demonstrators demanded Prem's resignation from his post, because they believed he had supported last September coup that overthrew Mr. Thaksin's administration.
The demonstration was led by the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD), whose leaders were key figures of the now-defunct former ruling Thai Rak Thai party.
Gen. Sonthi -- who also serves as army chief -- added that the CNS would hold a special meeting with the cabinet, at which he will report on security issues.
"The situation is now under police control," the CNS chief said. "It is therefore unnecessary for the army to take part in (Bangkok) security operations."
"The army now serves only as a backup for the police," he said. "We will take action if the protest goes out of control and an Emergency Decree is declared. Public sentiment is the most important factor that leads to an emergency declaration," Gen. Sonthi said.
From now on, strict enforcement of the laws will be imposed against the demonstrators, said Gen. Sonthi.

This kind of sycophancy really does nothing to dispel the notion that Prem is the puppetmaster of the coup:
Surayud apologises to Prem
Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont Tuesday apologised to Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda for the lax security measures that let anti-junta protesters riot in front of his Sisao Theves residence on Sunday night.
The government would do its best to prevent such clashes, he said after leading his Cabinet to Prem's residence at 2pm.
He said people who lost their power recently tried to frame Prem.
Surayud quoted Prem as saying that he was not angry with the people involved in the clash because nobody had expected the incident. However, he asked the government to do its best to lead the country back to democracy successfully.

Protesters file complaint against police
(BangkokPost.com) - Leaders from the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship filed a police complaint against Acting National Police Chief Seripisuth Temiyavej for ordering police to attack anti-coup protesters who clashed with police in front of Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda's residence.
About 200 police and 30 demonstrators were injured in the Sunday night's clash.
The protesters rallied to demand resignation of Gen Prem, accusing that he was behind the September 19 coup.
The leaders including Nattawut Saikua, Jakraphob Penkair, Chatuporn Promphan and Weng Tojirakarn claimed that Pol Gen Seripisuth ordered police to use forces inappropriately.

Protest leaders to hear charges Thursday
(BangkokPost.com) - The Criminal Court ordered nine key members of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) to return to the court on Thursday to hear the charges after they led a group of protesters to march to Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda's residence on Sunday night.
The protest led to a clash between riot police and protesters, resulting in 200 police and 59 protesters injured.
Deputy metropolitan police chief Jade Mongkolhatthee asked the court to issue arrest warrants for the nine key members of the UDD but the court asked the two parties on Wednesday whether they want to negotiate.
The police said they are willing to withdraw the requests for the warrants for the core leaders if all of them come to hear the charges on Thursday. The key members said they are willing to report themselves to the court and fight the case.
The core leaders, comprising PTV executives Chatuporn Promphan, Jakrapob Penkair and Nattawut Saikua; PTV president Veera Musikhapong; Viputthalaeng Pattanaphumthai, spokesman for the Saturday Voice Against Dictatorship; Weng Tojirakarn, adviser to the Confederation for Democracy; Jaran Ditthapichai, former member of the National Human Rights Commission; Manit Jitjanklab, former chief justice of the Criminal Court; and Apinant Viriyachai, a former Thai Rak Thai party MP, are scheduled to report themselves to the court at 10 am to hear the charges.
Dr Weng said all of the leaders will definitely go to court on Thursday to show their honesty.

Footage of scuffle distributed to local tvs
(BangkokPost.com) - Chairman of the Council for National Security Sonthi Boonyaratkalin has given the go-ahead for footage of Sunday’s melee between anti-government demonstrators and security officers to be distributed to all news stations to prevent misunderstanding that the government had hurt people.
The video clips show members of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) attacking police officers in front of Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda's residence.
Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office Thirapat Serirangsan said the clips will prove that police did not incite the violence and that they were unarmed at the time of the attack, save for protective shields.
“The clips speak on behalf of every police officer there. The demonstrators attacked them with rocks and concrete blocks and they were defenseless. That’s why they received injuries,” said Mr Thirapat.
Meanwhile, the government is working closely with the Ministry of Information Communications and Technology to develop a war-room through which local news will be generated to the public.
The move came as deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra's official website www.truethaksin.com was set to launch on Wednesday.

Banharn lashes out at protest leaders
(BangkokPost.com) - Chart Thai party leader Banharn Silapa-archa has branded key leaders of the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) as ingrates.
Mr Banharn also condemned PTV executives Veera Musikapong, Jakrapob Penkair as well as others involved in the demonstration outside Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda’s residence on Sunday.
”Gen Prem has done so much for the country and for them to have the gall to hold a rally outside his house is appalling,” Mr Banharn said.
The former Prime Minister also called on the government, the Council for National Security and the National Police Force to hand down to the protesters the harshest form of punishment.
He also launched a verbal attack on ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra, hinting that he may have been behind the rally.
“Mr Thaksin should just accept that he was wrong,” Mr Banharn said. “He probably backed the protest to spite the Assets Scrutiny Committee’s decision to freeze his assets.”

Prem shrugs off pressure for him to quit as King's adviser
Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda on Wednesday vowed to work for the country until he died even though he has faced strong protests recently calling for his resignation.
Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda
"I've served the country for a long time and will continue [my mission] until I die," Prem said shortly after presiding over an anti-graft campaign launch at Suan Amporn.
"I haven't lost my spirit. I'm determined to work for the country," he said, adding he wanted political peace to return to the country.
He refused to comment on whether he would sue leaders of the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD) after Sunday's violent protest outside his home.
Prem was speaking to reporters for the first time since the anti-coup demonstrators clashed with police on Sunday.
The protesters had gathered to call on Prem to resign, alleging that the Privy Council chief, rather than Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin, was the real leader of the September 19 coup.
Prem said he was not concerned about a plan by some former key members of the disbanded Thai Rak Thai Party to join a birthday party for deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra to be held in London. It was a personal matter for them, he added.
Meanwhile, Sonthi insisted that the junta would impose tough measures on protestors if they tried to repeat a rally like Sunday's.
Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont also warned that the DAAD protestors would not be allowed to move from Sanam Luang. Otherwise they would face legal action, he said.
Surayud refused to comment on whether Thaksin was behind the DAAD protest, but he said no evidence had so far linked Thaksin to the violence.

The United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD)
Press Release
25 July 2007
Dear friends,
The events of the past few days leave me with great consternation. Firstly there was unprovoked aggression by the state, in the form of reckless baton wielding and tear gas showered upon what was an essentially peaceful protest against the unconstitutional activities of Gen Prem, leaving a lot of people injured and in pain. Secondly, my colleagues in select domestic media have chosen to offer a heavily biased coverage of the tragic incident, pushing into oblivion, the plight of the protestors and putting to rest the concept of "neutral reporting". To them, I can only make exhortations to display greater courage and responsibility.
Late on Tuesday night (July 23rd), the government demonstrated that not only it capable of displays of overt aggression, like the kind it did to the protestors, but its also capable of activities of subtle, private coercion. My associate Oley dropped me off at a safe house and later how his way home he stopped at a convenience store to pick up food , when all of a sudden, four men emerged from the darkness and whisked him off in a bag to an unknown destination. He was then forced to drink a strong dose of what is suspected as sleeping medicine, and led to other places, before finally leaving him in the passenger seat of his own vehicle at a Big C Super market in Bang Bua Thong district. A definite statement of the vulnerability of all elements of the UDD against the great government machine.
Let it be known that such threats of action will only make our resolve to stand up for democracy and individual freedom much stronger, and that our moral fiber is dyed to the last strand in the colors of the cause and cannot and will not fade with either force or lure of any kind. The government has resolved to arrest the leaders of the UDD under the trumped up charges of engineering mob violence at the demonstration, and is facing a tough time in the courts trying to prove its assertions. The UDD is wedded to belief in the power of truth and non-violence and is committed towards adopting just those means to accomplish its noble objectives.
The government has displayed its true colors by engineering the drafting of a constitution, that will prolong its stay in power, and is now looking to engineer its adoption by gagging free debate on the topic. Also, it might just be a matter of time before the UDD leadership is put behind bars to make smooth for the CNS.
However we're prepared for all eventualities, and will be proud to resist every force that will try to restrain fellow Thais from achieving their natural rights of freedom and self determination

Police arrest 9 UDD key leaders
(BangkokPost.com) – Nine key leaders of United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) who are responsible for Sunday night's clashes between protesters and police were arrested by police after arriving at the Criminal Court to acknowledge charges against them.
The protest leaders include PTV executives Chatuporn Promphan, Jakraphob Penkair and Nattawut Saikua; PTV president Veera Musikhapong; spokesman for the Saturday Voice Against Dictatorship Viphuthalaeng Pattanaphumthai; advisor to the Confederation for Democracy Weng Tojirakarn; former member of the National Human Rights Commission Jaran Ditthapichai; former chief justice of the Criminal Cour Manit Jitjanklab; and former Thai Rak Thai party MP Apinant Viriyachai.
Police have refused to grant bail to all key leaders, fearing they may instigate unrest once out of police custody. All nine are being kept behind bars at Samsen police station.
All were charged with holding an illegal assembly of at least 10 people that caused unrest, instigating unrest and resisting orders from authorities. They denied all charges against them.
Mr Jakraphob, one of the detained leaders, accused police of betraying them by using the court's hand.
Police earlier asked the court to issue arrest warrants for the nine leaders, but it decided not to consider the police requests for the warrants, after they agreed to go to court to acknowledge the charges on Thursday.
Acting national police chief Seripisuth Temiyavej reportedly went to see Prime Minister Surayud at the Government House on Thursday morning, possibly to inform the premier about the arrests.
Pol Gen Seripisuth was said to be upset by the court's decision on Wednesday. He insisted that police would not withdraw the warrant requests.

Part of 2,000 cars that formed a convoy in Songkhla to campaign against Veera Musikapong, who led protest against Privy Councillor Gen Prem Tinsulaond. Prem is a native of Songkhla.//Charoon Thongnual
The banner reads something like " Ey Veera - Don't attempt to cross the Prem Bridges!". (Ey is a diminutive term.) The explanation of this is that Veera Musikapong is a Phattalung Province resident. I don't know the exact area he lives in, but this probably indicates that if he were stupid enough to travel to Songkhla, he would probably have to cross the two Prem Tinsulanonda Bridges across Songkhla Lagoon. Prem used to live on the island that divides the two bridges.
A couple of elections back, Veera also stood as a candidate in the Singhanakorn area North of the Lagoon estuary and the bridges. Although unsuccessful, he polled quite a few votes, so I guess he has some support base there - if now somewhat diminished. That area is the home turf of Trairong Suwankhiri, a rather blunt former Democrat Party MP of a rather comedic turn. Trairong is almost certainly a Prem supporter too.
Prem may take UDD to court
Likely to decide soon on defamation charges
WASSANA NANUAM & WASSAYOS NGAMKHAM
Gen Prem Tinsulanonda is considering whether to take legal action against the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) for defamation, said a source close to the Privy Council president yesterday.
The source said Gen Prem was compiling evidence and would soon decide whether or not to file defamation charges against nine key anti-coup figures.
His move comes after the UDD staged an anti-coup rally outside Gen Prem's Si Sao Thewes residence on Sunday. The protest culminated in violent clashes between demonstrators and police.
The UDD leaders, comprising mostly executives of the People's Television station (PTV) and former members of the disbanded Thai Rak Thai party such as Veera Musikhapong and Jakrapob Penkair, have strongly criticised Gen Prem for allegedly engineering the coup d'etat on Sept 19 last year which toppled the government of Thaksin Shinawatra. They also demanded Gen Prem resign as Privy Council president.
''Gen Prem is still undecided. He is considering whether to sue them [key figures in the UDD] for defamation,'' the source said.
''If Gen Prem decides to proceed against them, he will certainly make the decision known to the public,'' he added.
Gen Prem yesterday gave an interview to reporters for the first time since the demonstration on Sunday, after presiding over an event on counter-corruption organised by the Royal Irrigation Department at Amporn Gardens near his Si Sao Thewes residence.
Gen Prem said he had not been demoralised by the UDD's criticism of him but he was concerned about the ongoing political problems facing the country and wanted peace to be restored.
''I have been working a lot for the good of the country and I will continue to do so until the last day of my life,'' he said.
The source said Gen Prem was not receiving anyone who wanted to give him moral support for the time being, after Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont and Council for National Security chairman Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin visited him on Monday.
Gen Surayud said court proceedings against the protesters accused of breaking the law should be allowed to take their course, without any government interference in them.
On the subject of crowd control measures to cope with future demonstrations, the prime minister reiterated that the gatherings must be restricted only to the grounds of Sanam Luang.
Legal action will be enforced strictly against protesters who break out of the area, he said.
He did not rule out emergency rule, saying the government has crowd control measures of varying degrees, ranging from soft to tough.
Gen Sonthi said relevant authorities already have in mind what steps should be taken to deal with the protesters. Legal measures, he said, would be given priority.

Police to ask court to detain UDD leaders for 48 days
(BangkokPost.com) - Police investigators planned Friday to ask permission from Criminal Court to detain nine key leaders of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) for a total of 48 days to prevent them from stirring more unrest, police spokesman Supisarn Pakdeenarunart said in a radio interview on Friday morning.
The protest leaders in connection with their alleged involvement in Sunday's clash in front of Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda's residence were held in detention at Samsen police station on Thursday evening, after the court approved police investigators' requests for detention warrants for them.
They were accused of holding an illegal assembly of at least 10 people that caused unrest, of leading illegal acts, of resisting authorities and using force to harm them. In addition, they broke the law by holding illegal processions blocking traffic and using loud speakers without permission.
Pol Col Supisarn said police have the right to request the court for detention warrants. Each detention period is 12 days each time, and police can ask for the renewal of the period for four times, he said.
Pol Col Supisarn said releasing the nine UDD leaders may lead to unrest, plus there are many witnesses to be questioned, thus police will use the right to ask for the detention warrants for four times, until investigation is completed.
Supporters of the UDD came to the Samsen police station on Friday morning to bring breakfasts including coffee, soybean milk and fried popover for the detained leaders, who greeted them with a smile.
Security at the police station has been tightened since they were taken there. About 100 police have been deployed to prevent violent acts.
The clash between police and protesters on Sunday night resulted in injuries of 200 riot police and 59 protesters.

Jaran appeals letter to UN HCHR on violence against prodemocracy demonstration on 22 July

News

25 July, 2007
Mr. Homayoun Alizadeh,
Regional Representative,
Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
UNESCAP
Bangkok
Thailand
Dear Sir,
I, Mr. Jaran Ditapichai, an interim National Human Rights Commissioner and one of the leaders of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), would like to draw your attention to the recent act of human rights violation against a peaceful rally organized by the UDD on last Sunday July 22, 2007.
A Peaceful gathering and demonstrations of democratic and anti-dictatorship protesters have been organized by the UDD every night at Sanam Luang over these past two months during which several protest marches of tens of thousands of people protesting against the military junta were carried out peacefully and successfully without any violent clash. The UDD and its political assembly adheres to non-violence, and moreover with our past lessons of the Thai democratic movement which led to several bloody suppressions, we take great pre-cautions to avoid violent clash and we do our very best to protect human lives.
On July 22, the UDD led a demonstration of about 30,000 protesters from Sanam Luang to protest against the Privy Council President General Prem Tinsulanonda who we believe was the key person behind the 19 September 2006 coup d'etat. The prtotesters left Sanam Luang at around 2 PM where we were later obstructed twice on the way to the Privy Council President's residence , however, we could manage to peacefully negotiate with the police and moved through the barriers without any clash. We reached General Prem Tinsulanonda's residence at around 5 PM and set up our stage to demand for his resignation from the post of the President of the Privy Council. At around 9:30 PM, the several hundreds of policemen, with anti-riots shields and batons, moved in to disperse the crowd in order to arrest the speakers and the leaders who were on the stage. I witnessed the incidence myself as I was one of the speakers on the stage. Four such attempts by the police took place at approximately 20 minutes interval. The police used their batons, pepper and tear gas to disperse the crowd causing 42 minor to severe injuries with 6 arrest who are still being detained. The people tried to protect us, speakers on the stage, pushing back the police force with their bare hands; throughout the time, we made announcements from the stage asking the police not to hurt the people and observe our rights to assembly and to demand for democracy. It was apparent that military personnel was mixed with the anti-riot police force in use for the operation while military troop was on standby ready to move in for the final suppression. We decided to retreat back to Sanam Luang in order to avoid further possible violent suppression in order to save the lives of the protestors.
As a human rights advocate, this brutal action to disperse the crowd is against the rights to lives and physical integrity of the people; it is against the rights to assembly and expression of our democratic movement. The police is now preparing for a court order to arrest 18 leaders including me in an attempt to put an end to our struggle for democracy.
I request your attention and demand that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights report to the Human Rights Council and Treaty body of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Yours sincerely,
Mr. Jaran Ditapichai

The injustice of July 27 and today is never end of the fight for Thailand's democracy, but rather the beginning of the end of Thailand's aristocracy. From Jakrapob Penkair
Can't help thinking that 'elite' is a better term than aristocracy, since there is a strong element of new money in the group that Jakrapob takes issue with. Although personally speaking, I prefer to apply the term thieving bastards to elements of the *******y, big business, politicians, judges, military, police, civil servants, monks, media moguls and others who persistently abuse their power. Thaksin falls neatly into this category, as his patronizing concessions to democracy were all designed to further his business and grip on power. Even if UDD never took a single satang of Thaksin money (highly unlikely), I would still not trust it. Both Veera and Jakrapob played a huge role in the Thaksin administrations. Thaksin didn't break the mold so much as play the old Puu Yai deception on an even bigger scale than ever before. And people like Veera and Jakrapob were there to help him and help themselves into the bargain.
"The beginning of the end of Thailand's aristocracy". Not a snowball's chance in hell! Real and significant political change might come about after years of hard slog and foot-pounding politics. A UDD-inspired revolution would almost certainly replace one tyranny with another. (We only have to look at the post-1932 dictators to figure that no-brainer out.) Most of these pussyfoots (including Thaksin) have done precisely zilch to bring about any real change, give or take their few rather naive attempts to go native in the NE's forests in the 70s. Since then, most of them have proved worthless as politicians.
Aristocracy is hydra-headed anyway. You never entirely get rid of it, so much as keep it at reasonable bay.
Spare us all that stupid headband-wearing storming of the barricades macho man BS. It's lazy-man's politics anyway.

Bangkok Post might want to spell out for us whether this was Dr Yongyuth's opinion on a matter in the public domain or his considered advice to one of his patients: ;)
Psychiatrist tells Sonthi to visit protesters
(BangkokPost.com) - A psychiatrist suggested Council for National Security chairman Sonthi Boonyaratkalin to visit eight key leaders of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) who are detained in the Bangkok Special Prison for their alleged involvement in Sunday night's clashes in front of Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanond's residence.
Dr Yongyuth Wongpiromsan, psychiatrist at Department of Mental Health, said the prison visit will ease political tension.
"In difficult situation, we should show sympathy to reduce violence," Dr Yongyuth said.
He urged the CNS to try to reconcile more with the anti-junta groups, adding that differences in political opinions is an improvement in the Thai society.

Now, Thai Insider has described they way papa prem has responsed to UDD Demostrators days by days from Sunday 22 July to Thursday 26 July
Monday: Bing Bung (Tiger No. 1) came to apoligize Papa prem - the Southerners go storming Ai Weera's and Ai jatuporn's houses .... and even the Midget Bunhardn jointed the bandwagons ...
Tuesday: Surayut and the old ginger cabinate went to Papa Prem to apoligize for the slow response ... and Appa Prem insists that he is not behind the coup that oust Ai maew and Co,.
Wednesday: Papa Prem told the journalists that he is worrking abotu the current situation
Thursday: the D-Day ... Morning Pap Prem is asking Ms. Yuwadee of the Government Hosue if she is okay .... durign the discourse abotu Thai language
Thursday Evening after the speech to Police ... Pol Gen Seriphisut told that his men had arrest 9 UDD ring leaders ... Pap p Prem said "very, very good"
Now, it is a sure prediction that Pol Gen Seriphisut will become de factor COmmander of police Dept. .... and the other one will control Calvary - to prevent thsoe remainging of Thaksin men from rolling a fllet of tanks ....
Big Bugn can either go int ceremonial Head odf Supreme Commander if everythign goes according to he plan or become involved in Politics if everythign did not go accordign to the plan.
Furthermore, the East Asia Dept of Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been assigned to translate the book "24 Hours after teh coup" written in Chinese by the Chinese writers ... for PR Propose to please the ego of Ai maew.
According to the brieft translation, the translators have to PUKE out due to the message in tha book praising Ai Maew as an honest savior for the Nation ... even though it is a wekll known fact that he has involved too many scandals alogn with corruptions ....
Furthermore, Ai maew's reference to the Charisimatic person outside constitution is the way to attack Papa Prem .... and cause the reaction that wake all Army Generals up ....

Now, Bangkok biznews Columnist has criticized Ai jaran and the Human right Committee that if they are accusing papa prem as the one who acts behind the scence for 19 September 2006 coup, why don't they use the regular mechanism of Human Right committee instead of goign with UDD ...
Worse, there are lots of poison pen attackign Ajarn Saneh Jamarik [the head of Huam nright committee] and co. by thsoe who worked with Ajarn Saneh ... while htey refuse to use regular mechanisim to censure Ajan Saneh and Co.
Worse still, the media reform seems no longer criticize ASTV and Khun SOndhi Limthongkul whcioh should not be this way ....
Howerver, the Worst of all of these abnpormalities is the intellectuals whose used to be critical to Thaksin regime .... they have beocme anti-coup and then take side with Thaksin whome they used to despite .,... Real hypocrtites to the core!

Worse still Ai manit (the judge) is seekign a bail by usign deteriorating health as the execute to get the bail .... further ruing the plan to gain international sympathy ...
On the other hand, AI Jarn had sent an open letter to the Head of UNHCR to gain international sympathy for theri plight ....
However those insiders said this kind of bailing otu is due to the fact that Money from Ee Sudarat has nto reached the hand of Ai Jaran ... . A mercenaryt without doubt
