I'd just like to say a thank you to 2Bangkok for providing this awesome informative web site. Every major city should have a site like this.. Happy lunar new year to 2Bangkok and it's readers.

Just out of interest, what caused the Songkran traffic spike? Was 2Bangkok linked to by some major Thai site...?
But I'm glad to see you're back online!
ConorBracken

Links from a * Thai* site would be unlikely to cause that kind of spike.
I heard that the Songkran content was picked up by the biggest blogger sites and got passed on to many smaller blogger sites.
Then it made the first page in Google under "Songkran" which no doubt helped to maintain the higher levels. (Currently it's on page 2 of Google for that word)
The first 2Bangkok.com meeting
The very first 2Bangkok.com meeting will be held at the rooftop restaurant at Tower Inn (533 Silom Road) at 19:30 on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 (map-> http://2bangkok.com/towerinnmap.jpg)
The Tower Inn Restaurant is a relatively inexpensive rooftop restaurant and a good alternative to the super-high priced rooftop restaurants of the nearby Baiyoke and Sirocco.
Hopefully all the 2Bangkok.com regulars can meet each other in person and swap Bangkok lore. Let us know if you can attend (or have any better idea about the timing) by posting to this thread.
Thanks for making this possible, Ron.
Yes, I suppose I will be able to attend, though the later, the better..... 8 pm should be perfect. We also don't know how much time it takes everyone to go to Silom - though I can at least use the Subway now :-)
Looking forward to meeting you all!
I'd love to go but..., too bad, I won't be back in Bangkok yet. :(
I hope the turnout will be good enough to have a second one soon.
Please do take lots and lots of pictures and, most importantly, have fun. :)

Khun Ron,
I got your message already ... I'll try to go there but may be a little bit late sicne I need to catch the company bus at 5 PM so as to go downtown without problems. :D ;) :p
Hi Ron.. yes I'd love to go too, but I won't be back in Thailand by then. I am planning to go back in mid-late August.
I hope those who attend have great time. I hope there will be more meetings like this in the future :)

That's great, so we will be 4 persons at the very least? Anyway, please wait for the late comers.
Excited to met the Thai railway experts Wisarut and Reiner!!! :D
Just a question that crossed my mind - how to find y'all in the restaurant? Will any signs be put up for the meeting? ;)
There should be a table for "Ron" (it was easier than trying to explain 'a table for 2Bangkok.com' in Thai!). If it's raining we'll have to find another restaurant in the building...
Yes, cheers!
It started slowly, but now it's advancing relentlessly...
I think what it takes to get forums moving is someone to post something/start a new thread everyday... this encourages everyone to post. I always meant to, but after updating the main page each morning at 6am, I too tired to think of anything else. ;)
I'll be there for sure, and I've forwarded the www.2bangkok.com and meeting info URLs to carefully selected longtime working expats of quality. I suggest others do, too.
Ron's created one of the best quality websites on Bangkok, as y'all already know ... and it's good to support Ron so that he continues these contributions for a long time to come!
All the best,

Well, I don't know what Ron will write tomorrow, but let me shortly summarize:
We were 7 persons - 2 Americans, 1 Australian, 2 Germans, 2 Thais. One female (i.e. my gf), the rest male.
All agreed that the venue was very nice. Quite peaceful and with a good view of the nighttime skyline around Silom/Sathorn.
Hopefully more people will be able to join next time. Admittedly, this meeting was announced on very short notice.
Nevertheless, it was fun. Most of the talk revolving around Railroads/SRT (the hottest subject by far), the Skytrain and Subway (of course) - as well as construction (Suvannabhumi, Highrises, Mega Bridge) and a whole lot of other things.
We left at 11 pm, agreeing that the meetings should be continued in the future and hoping that some more experts (such as Khun Pas) will join. But of course EVERYONE is welcome!
Here's a photo of the 2Bangkok.com gang...

I wish I could have been there - but 6,000 miles is too far to go!
I look forward to ore and more interesting and useful stories - particularly about SRT, and especially anything about freight!

The same to me krub. Seems the distance plays the main part indeed. Well... all in all, at least now you know that it's not only 7 people who are really "into" this site. I myself will live in Chiang Mai and I am thinking about the younger brother site of 2BKK contenting the urban issues particulary on Chiang Mai city. It's now important that the CM needs a site like this too. I will keep both (small) eyes on this wonderful site. What a great load of works and dedications you guys have to do! :-) I really do appreciate it so much.
CHeers for all the team and for the hard work krub (and hope I can join soon the next meeting when I can).
All the best krub.

congras! let's party!!
So Ron (and the others),
should we keep it this way, holding a meeting every last Tuesday of the month at the rooftop garden of Tower Inn, starting around 19:30?
I think it's quite good like this! :)
That'd mean the next one would be Tuesday August 31st 2004. Or maybe one week earlier, as this is really the last day of the month? How about August 24th (and then September 28th)?

Good day, everyone!
Regular meetings seem a very good idea to me. Nothing wrong with Tuesday, as far as I am concerned. The location is excellent.
However, I shall be "out of circulation" for the next three months,
travelling "home" and to North America.

Hai Guys,
I like to see Bangkok from a roof top and for sure was willing to attend the first meeting but a plane ticket AMS - BKK is a bit expensive for the purpose only.
So go on, by the time I am back in Thailand - beginning next year -hopefully there will be a meeting while I am in Bangkok.
I'll bring tulips from Amsterdam!

That's sounds good--however, this month, Pas, the webmaster of Bangkok Highrises will be in town on August 29th... I want to schedule to next one at a time so he can be there. I am asking him his schedule now...
Hi everyone..
I really look forward to meet you all at the next meeting but as Ron mentioned I won't be in Bangkok until 29th August. Please, could the meeting be held after the 29th - NCR suggested Tuesday 31st August, that date would suite me better ;) :)
regards
Pas
How about it?
Is August 31st ok for the next 2B meeting?
We'll have a new Bangkok Governor by then too!
That sounds OK to me. What about other people's opinions?
If you missed the first one, the second 2Bangkok.com gathering will be held at the rooftop restaurant at Tower Inn (533 Silom Road, photo left) at 20:00 on Tuesday, August 31, 2004.
Pas from Bangkok Highrises will be in town and at the meeting. We also will have a new bangkok Governor to talk about by then.
The Tower Inn Restaurant is a relatively inexpensive rooftop restaurant and a good alternative to the high-priced rooftop restaurants of the nearby Baiyoke and Sirocco. Even if it is raining we can sit at one of the covered areas. If it is raining too hard we can find another restaurant in the Hotel.

We've posted a notice about the second 2B here: http://www.angkor.com/2bangkok/2bangkok/forum/showthread.php?threadid=296

As with the last meeting, I will unfortunately not be able to attend. Perhaps in December when I am next in Bangkok.

I have seen a picture by Krungthep Turakij on 2Bangkok that looks just like my brother. We have not heard from him since Christmas day and he was staying on Kho Phi-Phi. I would really like to find out where the picture was taken, when and whether Krungthep Turakij knows the name of the person in it, where he is staying etc. Sorry if this is an innapropriate forum for this request but I'm sure everyone can understand my urgency. Evening all (or at least in the UK).
I'm flying out to Thailand on Saturday 15th for the first time, on business. It is in connection with a high speed rail line ( I can't say which!) and am looking forward to it very much.
It will be my first trip to SE Asia but I am expected to be there for around three months altogether this year.
I was pointed towards 2Bangkok by our local representative and I have learned much about the rail system, Thailand and the general politics from this site, for which I give thanks. These things can be invaluable when starting work in a new country. I only wish that I had the same information in the last country I worked!
In return, I will try to keep people on 2Bangkok informed about developments in rail in Taiwan as long as I can do so without breaking confidentiality.
Regards

Thanks for the hello's. As I said before, this will be my first trip to Thailand and I am looking forward to it.
"Hope you manage to make a nice profit out of the feasibility study. Unlike the politicians, you'll almost certainly deserve it. However, I wouldn't waste too much time waiting for it to happen. I believe it was the Big Yin (or some other political clone) who promised this place a high-speed train back in about 1996; to be built shortly. So far not a sausage. I guess it served its real purpose of securing a nice position at the feeding trough; and was then dropped. And of course its now re-emerged for electoral purposes only. Trucks and airlines are so much more lucrative in the long-term. I'd advise you not to get too enthusiastic about your own studies."
Do I detect a note of cynicism in the above post? Don't think Thailand is unique in having large infrastructure projects dangled as an enticements for votes. In the UK we were promised 20+ new light rail lines by our then new government. In nine years, the only ones opened (3) were all started under their predecessors.
Unfortunately, I tend to agree that the future of this project seems to be, at least, questionable. From what I have learned so far it appears driven by regional politics rather than any obvious need. However, no doubt I'll find out more next week.

According to 3-9 February 2005 Montreal's Mirror (http://www.montrealmirror.com/2005/020305/worthy.html), 2bangkok.com is networthy.
2Bangkok is an award-winning blog about popular culture and political life in Thailand, seen through the eyes of an American guy who happens to be a techie and a Hoosier... (http://www.montrealmirror.com/2005/020305/worthy.html)
Been doing a lot of searches on the net using Copernic Agent Basic. The search terms are fed to about 14 search engines in one go, so a lot of returns turn up. On Bangkok & Thailand issues, 2Bkk.com turns up consistently on serious issues. It seems to me it strikes a good balance between fairly serious reportage (with good photos) and the 'froth' sites that Thailand has so many of. Best English language site I've found so far in Thailand.
Personally, I think ajarn.com sucks. In fairness, I don't think that is the proprietor's fault. He certainly tries hard. The fact of the matter is that English teaching here is almost devoid of real bonhomie. It's incredibly cut-throat; despite having such meagre long-term returns and prospects.
On another note, who is the Dr Has who is sending some insightful photos of the situation down south? I think we would all like to know more about his background; although it's possible he doesn't want to be too high-profile. Life is pretty cheap down there right now; no exaggeration!
Best English language site I've found so far in Thailand.Yes, that's for sure! (Can we imagine a life without our daily dose of 2Bangkok anymore?) :) :) :)

I just added some user ranks to the forum (with Nils' input):
20 User rank - Tuk-tuk passenger
50 User rank - Bus driver
100 User rank - Skytrain passenger
250 User rank - Subway passenger
500 User rank - Railroad engineer
750 User rank - Transport Minister
1000 User rank - Tram conductor
This means when you reach 20 posts, your rank is Tuk-Tuk passenger, etc.
I've tried to make something clever that has to do with 2B, but this can probably be refined. Anyone have any ideas?
I'm a Skytrain passenger then.
How about Chao Phraya Express Boat passenger? I occasionally use it. Also Bangkok was once called "Venice of the East". :)
the question is where "Chao Phraya Express Boat passenger" fits in the ranking...

the question is where "Chao Phraya Express Boat passenger" fits in the ranking...
Agreed on a boat passenger theme, even 'ferry passenger'. Perhaps, between 75-100 posts.
Thank you admin, good idea.
One query though, in keeping with Thai organisational hiearchy social status, are bus drivers drivers of non-aircon buses or air-con version buses?
75-100 sounds good to me.
Anyway, keep posting Khun Yappofloyd.
You're almost done with your "bus driver" rank. :)
20 User rank - Tuk-tuk passenger

100 User rank - Skytrain passenger
250 User rank - Subway passenger
500 User rank - Railroad engineer
750 User rank - Transport Minister
1000 User rank - Tram conductor
Quite nice, but why would a tram conductor be above a transport minister?
Okay, okay, I know...... You just love those tramways, Ron! :)
i put tram conductor last because it is a fantasy position now that no longer exisits... so in some way it would be the ultimate experience

Hmm -- what's the logic between some positions being drivers and others being passengers? I think it would be better to either stick with one, or then put the drivers in the higher ranks.
Also, ticket collectors deserve their own rank! I nominate the Saen Saep canal boat ticket collectors, who cling to the slippery sides, bump their heads against the bridges and get doused with unspeakable filth while the ferry barrels down the khlongs at ludicrous speed, as the worst underpaid heroes of this city
Hmm -- what's the logic between some positions being drivers and others being passengers? I think it would be better to either stick with one, or then put the drivers in the higher ranks.Agreed, better make all the passengers 'drivers'.
(But then, who wants to be a 'stupid' subway driver after that accident....?)

wow! this is really unique. thanks! very different. :D
ok, i changed them all to driver, conductor, or captain (no more 'passenger')
That's much better now!
Only one gripe - the range for the Expressboat Captain (75-100) doesn't quite make sense. It is too narrow and the difference to the previous level is also too small. (It's 20 posts for tuk-tuk driver, 30 more for bus driver, and then 25 more for expressboat captain. And then suddenly 150 more for Skytrain driver.)
This range should gradually increase the higher we get. The system should be as follows:
0 Registered User
20 Tuk-tuk driver (+20)
50 City bus driver (+30)
100 Chao Phraya Expressboat captain (+50)
150 Skytrain driver (+50)
250 Subway driver (+100)
500 Railroad engineer (+250)
750 Transport Minister (+250)
1000 Tram conductor (+250)
Numbers in brackets show difference in posts from subordinate level.

On a side note, try out Aware (http://www.AwareSearch.com). It doesn't search as many engines, but you can refine the results by feeding back on which ones are good and which are bad. Pretty cool.

So this is not a story on 2Bangkok but it's about 2Bangkok, close enough?
Anyway, I recently stumbled onto Blogshares (http://www.blogshares.com/?referer=27077), an interesting virtual stockmarket kind of thing where the shares being swapped around represent blogs. Sure enough, there are also 2Bangkok shares being traded, in duplicate at that:
www.2bangkok.com (http://blogshares.com/blogs.php?blog=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.2bangkok.com%2F&referer=27077), shares B$247.89 ea, valuation B$8,944.64
2bangkok.com (http://blogshares.com/blogs.php?blog=http%3A%2F%2F2bangkok.com%2F&referer=27077), shares B$0.68 ea, valuation B$2,410.53
The first one is locked up by some Indian guy who owns all the outstanding shares, the second one is publicly tradeable but I'm currently the only shareholder. :) I've already dropped a note to the admins to merge 'em and add bangkokairport.info and bangkoksubway.com as additional URLs.
Ron, you can claim (http://blogshares.com/help.php?node=7&referer=27077) 2Bangkok for yourself by putting a tag on the main page until their spider sees it, then you'll get 1000 shares as "CEO" and you can do fun stuff like issue more.
And everybody else, all you need to do is register and you'll get B$500 to invest in as you wish. Let's see if we can replicate a Thai-style stockmarket bubble online as well... :D
Unfortunately I still stay in The Netherlands. Next year january will be the first time that my wife and I will visit Thailand for about 10 weeks. Hope than to meet some memberrfriends if possible.
At the moment I'm preparing a map of Ban Buathong Railway and Bangkok trammap thai version. I hope to present this maps end of april.

Yes after having a look this morning (Sudan time) and posting a couple of brief posts I found that I couldn't bring up the site tonight and was disturbed by the CAT annoucement (which give no explanation nor email or phone details to query). I only hope that this is a brief oversight for some reason and not an over reaction by some civil servant to something Ron has put on the website recently.

Well, the fact that the message appears to be the actual index page (rather than some kind of intercepting page from a different source) suggests it might be a fooler. That said, I doubt it. If fooled & disgruntled 2bkkers went ahead & complained to CAT about something they hadn't done, the consequences might be even more serious.
Could it be that IceT's sister objected to the comment about her not going to Sanoh White's Birthday Party?
Perhaps too, CAT has a humorous streak.

Atleast the name servers are USA side... and a simple traceroute to the servers proves the server is in Lansing Michigan. So technically the CAT could not possibly block the site, unless they are into hacking servers an ocean away.

From looking at all the posts, I am now assuming that this is a Aprils fool joke esp. as Ron has been absent from the forum and that one can still access all of the other 2BKK pages via google cache, http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:coWHm1wMNI8J:www.2bangkok.com/+&hl=en&start=1. I'm sure that even the relevant authorities responsible for blocking sites would not be so incompetant as to only block the mian address.
As Khun Enforcer rightly says April Folls finishes at noon but perhaps Ron is on US Pacific time.....
Perhaps Ron decided that switching it back on at midday wasn't really long enough to make an effective online April Fooler, given that some folk probably don't check in until the late evening.

...this splendid idea earned Ron a mention in the latest Stickman Weekly (http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/Weekly/weekly205.htm):
[...] This past Friday saw some great April Fools Day jokes across the Thai websites. One site had a notice erected saying that it had been closed down and was done in such a way that many people were fooled, hundreds in fact. Another said that the Prime Minister had resigned while one said that 2 AM closing had been re-instated. The last one got a few people's hopes up. [...]

Just been reading in the news about the recent bomb blast in Had Yai.
Does this really mean that the violence is going to shift to other places in the future?
I think a lot of damage will be done to the tourist industry if this carries on.
I hope somebody finds a way to stop this before it goes too far.
... as well as in The Nation's/Phil MacDonald's hilarious Farangaffairs today (not yet online).
It took exactly 2 months for the last 1000 (average: 17 per day). Perhaps the rate will stay something like this for the near future? Saturation point reached?

I first stumbled across this website in 1999 (I think it used to be just Angkor.com back then). I remember I was in the uni computer lab browsing the net in between writing a 10000 word uni thesis!!
Like Hitesh, I was also curious about the impending opening of skytrain (after what.. so many years of delay!!) I've been away from Bangkok for a few years but still keen on following progress of this project.. well back in the days when lavalin was awarded the contract to build a 'skytrain' and they shot themself in the foot by proposing to build a train depot at Lumpini Park!!
Anyway I did a random search on yahoo and came across the exclusive photos "first ride on the skytrain" and a peek of subway construction. This website!! I remember seeing the photos of tunnel sections stacking along Ratchadapisek Road. Though I really enjoy the photo tour of Ta Phrom as well as I've never been to Cambodia. It was like being there!
So much to reminisc.. Thank you Ron for keeping the site going after all these years :)

How do I attach image(s) to a post? GWR seems to have mastered the trick, but my profile tells me I may not post attachments...
No, it doesn't depend on the user, but rather on the settings for each thread or sub-forum.
If you go to the threads where GWR inserted pics, you'll see that it says [IMG] code is On, and if you start a reply, it has a symbol "Insert Image" as well.
Don't know why it's enabled in some parts of the forum, ask Admin......
But actually, I don't really like it when threads get cluttered with imagery and take ages for loading, especially when I see how people on other forums don't seem to be able to use some image processing software (and common sense) to downsize their pics before posting them --- we can also link to pictures hosted elsewhere, rather than inserting them directly.
It has to be said that there is indeed a certain saturation. Posting is somewhat on the decline for the first time:
It took almost three months for the last 1000 - the average is down to 12 posts/day.
Nevertheless, we are slowly but surely approaching 1000 threads.....

Not quite sure what real use this is, but is interesting to run a comparison with other websites; and there is a function on this page that will allow you to do just that. I ran one by with http://www.ajarn.com ; which has a slightly higher traffic rating than the frontpage of this site. Their traffic is consistently a lot heavier, but 2Bkk.com is subject to much heavier sudden surges of traffic. There was one such surge in August. Could it have been the obsession with Google Earth that gripped everyone for a while?:-
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?q=&url=http://www.2bangkok.com
I remember the main page having a URL for an RSS feed.
Does anyone know what the URL is?
The RSS was an experiment i tried for awhile... it was a semi-manual kludge that i created off the 2B shtml pages (2B does not use any CMS--just old fashioned html).
Anyway it was a pain to maintain so i stopped doing it. I really want to have a database-driven system, but have just spent all my time updating the site each day. Most CMS's I have looked at are a pain to customize (for the way I want 2B to look) and resource heavy considering the heavy traffic 2B gets. I also can't imagine what it would take to port 2B's seven years of data into a database...
Other sites have asked about running feeds from 2B (including Google News), but I haven't had the time to figure out the best way to implement a CMS yet...
Looks like we're heading for 500 members in the next few days.
We just passed 7000 posts today (150 days for the last 2000 posts = 13.33 per day).
At the current pace, we'll reach the 10,000 posts threshold around June/July 2006, well before the forum's third anniversary.

Way to go! It gives us a sort of motivation to carry on contributing constructive ideas. and i must say, that this thread is a very useful guide.
Dear Wisarut/ 2bangkok.com thread regulator and postmaster,
I want to report to you about a serious case of malicious attack on me by your 2bangkok.com member Clayton. He came up with unreasonale and invalid examples to hurt me by his words at "Star Appraisals for Airlines" (my thread).
I am seeking for my comments on my web-site http://airpost.4t.com only but Clayton manipulated his comments by launching an unreasonable attack on my character and my right of freedom.
As a writer and publisher, I have every right to take charge of my writings outside 2bangkok.com. In the past, I have many positive writings on-line and because of limited space, i have to remove them from my external web-sites. I have not posted anything negative about Bangkok, Thailand nor made complaints about Bangkok's services on your web-site. So, I do not know why I have to be subjected to character manipulation by Clayton your member.
There is a right to freedom of expression but self-restraint must be exercised if the reader has something against the writer's charatcer, religion or race.
I feel that you as a postmaster should regulate the policy against malicious attacks on members using 2Bangkok.com forums, exercise Forum censorship and not let it be used as a platform for revenges or postings to hurt other nationalities' feelings.
Ok, I have closed the thread in question. I think all that could be said was said. Let's try to move on to another topic and play nice.

Offence is meted when anyone undermines your character as long as you are a person. It need not be your religion, race or nationality. The offence is worse when anyone that does not wish to see your face bullies you behind the PC screen, on the Forum ! This is my perspective.

This was on the 2B frontpage a couple of days ago.
Knut from Sweden is looking for a girl he once met on Phuket. Well, I know him through an exchange of emails and am the one who originally introduced him to 2Bangkok, so I might as well post his request here once again to give it a more permanent place and increase the chances of someone recognizing her.
The story (http://web.telia.com/~u26400624/Patong%20Beach.html) as per his homepage (http://web.telia.com/~u26400624/Eindex.html):
Some years ago I decided to make a long walk from Patong to the waterfall in Kathu. After some kilometres a young Thai girl stopped her motorbike and asked me in very bad English where I was going. I told her and she offered me a ride. After some more kilometres she passed the cross road going to the waterfall. So I told her to stop and let me off. She stopped and said to me that we shall not go to the waterfall. I became a big question mark - what did she mean? She then said 'mai fon, mai nam tok', which means 'no rain, no waterfall'. I was still a big question mark - so where are we going now? Just hang on, you will see. My curiosity made me to obey. Soon we came to Kathu, where she stopped and asked me to join her. She entered a temple where she bought two bunches of incense. One she gave to me and told me to follow her and do the same as she. The air in the temple was thick of smoke, but I hold out and fell to my knees in front of Buddha and lit my incense on every place in the temple. When they were finished we hurried quickly away and soon we arrived to Phuket town, where a giant religious ceremony (katin) was passing through the streets with fire-crackers exploding around. I saw participants with masks (khon) representing different gods, among others Hanoman - the monkey god. In the long procession I saw many badly hurt by the fire-crackers. One had got it in his eye, which did not stop him from participating. I managed to get free from these and I don't think I was a goal. All the time the girl was running in a high speed and I had some difficulty to keep up with her. Finally the adventure was over and she asked me to sit up again on her motorbike. When we returned to Patong she told me that she should start working within 15 minutes. Her name was Cherry. I told her now that I wanted to talk to her, so we sat down on a stone bench. I first asked her why she had taken me up from the road. She answered: "I saw you were a Buddha". Now I really felt curious. "But - how ... ?". "Yes", she said "your white dress and you walked and walked and walked". When I showed her my Buddha amulet, she was not surprised. "I knew" she said. Now I asked her why she never smiled like other Thai people. She said "Cherry not happy, have no friends, no papa, no mama, no contact with brothers and sisters, Cherry not smile". I had to fight my tears - so touching. I told her she must smile a little to get friends. Then there was a little smile on her lips. "Oh, look", I said, "you just got a friend". "Have I", she replied with a big smile, "I will not work today, instead I bring you to Kata". So she did and now we were friends. In Kata I offered her a vegetarian lunch and we split. We never met again. I wish I could show a photo, but my camera was on my room that day, but see my painting (http://www.hellonewyork.com/art/ViewPiece.CFM?AAID=15767).
At the current pace, we'll reach the 10,000 posts threshold around June/July 2006, well before the forum's third anniversary.Bingo!
Nobody paid attention, but we did pass the 10,000 mark some days ago.
Probably time to close this thread once and for all..... the only big thing still missing is surpassing the 1,000 registered users mark (as of today we have 794).

… Nobody paid attention …
Sorry, there’s so much to attend to that things like this slip away. Do we really have to congratulated ourselves or do we just deserve it.
In the latter here some imaginary cakes, enjoy it.
Thanks for your cake, it was delicious. (Or I imagine it was.) I took the freedom to take two imaginary pieces. :D
Was it a Dutch cake or a Thai cake?

A real Dutch cake with a lot of “slagroom” (Shlagsahne / whipped cream) but in this case a real Dutch treat I fear. Sorry guys.
you remember your birthday don't you? :)
have a good one.
Pas
...and you never forget to congratulate me? Has become something of a ritual on this forum, hasn't it. :D
Thanks, Pas.

Perhaps one of the political parties will deliver this year and give you a mass transit line or two for next birthday?

Hello
How do you insert pictures in a forumtread?
/Enis
Not every subforum allows the insertion of images at the moment. However, if there is something you want to insert in a subforum that doesn't currently allow images, just send me a 'private message' in this forum saying roughly what it is you wish to post and in which subforum. I may then be able to get the image function operating on that subforum. If you are not sure if a subforum has this function, look at the buttons above the message text box. (This subforum doesn't have it, for example.) There should be a small button with the tooltip 'Insert image' on mouseover. Click that button and it inserts this in the text box:
You can then paste the image location between the and the . This is only an example, as 'Image' is not available in this subforum:
http://www.angkor.com/2bangkok/head2b.gif
Of course, you can always just insert a link to an image instead. I often do this with:
http://www.tinypic.com/
You can upload an image to Tinypic very quickly, and then will provide you with a link that you can paste in between the tags. I also use Tinypic if I think that the image will end up wider than a normal forum posting, because I can't be bothered to figure out the HTML code for reducing the image size. Example:
http://media.tinypic.com/23svlds_th
The Maps and History forums allow image insertion. Some other forums too.
And it's Pas' birthday again!
Best wishes to you, Mr. Highrise. ;)
(Funny - we only met each other once: at the second 2Bangkok Meeting on 31 August 2004. But the birthday thing has been going on ever since. See, he's such a friendly guy. :D )
thanks Nils :) lets keep this thread going as a perpetual birthday wish thread :D

A few days ago we passed 12 000 posts. Not going to work out the average per day but I am sure someone will. The number of threads is nearly 2000 and also approaching 1000 members but not sure how many are active.

The number of threads is nearly 2000 and also approaching 1000 members but not sure how many are active.Well, the members list (http://www.angkor.com/2bangkok/2bangkok/forum/memberlist.php) now only seems to show those who have at least made 1 post (I remember that used to be different), and there are 338 users listed as of today, 19 of which with > 100 posts. (If you want to take "has actually once posted something" as the definition for "active user".) But if you go to the list and sort it by number of posts, on the first page you'll get 30 users with more than 50 posts. And if you look at those names, I think that pretty accurately sums up our currently active users. Whereas the second page (< 50 posts) already shows lots of users who haven't been active for months or years.
Happy New Year!

All Thais should join hands to solving the various problems confronting the country, such as political, economic and security, His Majesty the King said in a New Year message to the nation.
On a positive note, His Majesty thanked the people for organising a "beautiful and grand" celebration to honour the 60th anniversary of the King's accession to the throne.
His Majesty also thanked all the well-wishers while he was hospitalised for their expressions of "genuine concern".
"I am still impressed to see all of you, regardless of gender or age or position, offering me moral support. This moral support is a vital force that enables people to confront problems and obstacles and allows them to live life successfully and complete their vocation."
His Majesty wished that everyone should give compassion, goodwill and encouragement to one another for the good of themselves and the Kingdom.
His Majesty's New Year greeting card to the Thai people this year showed the King dressed in long-sleeved yellow shirt sitting on a chair with his favourite canine, Khun Thong Daeng, and nine puppies descended from her.

The forum just passed 2000 threads a day or two ago as we also approach 13 000 posts.
The number of members is very slowly creeping up to 1000 but may still take some time to get there. As Khun ncr rightly points out the members who are active posters are few.

2Bangkok.com editor Ron Morris comments: I am not sure I trust our webhost in the U.S. anymore. There have been too many incidents on critical news days where an "unexpected" problem stalls us from posting updates and news for a day or so.
On Friday night a "freak accident" (their words) on the server removed a day's worth of forum posts, bounced back all emails sent to 2Bangkok, and prevented the update of the site.
We do have all of the missing forum posts from the last 24 hours and will attempt to restore the information today. As soon as ftp access is restored, we will be posting photos from the Friday night rally.
It is almost 12 hours and we have yet been able to gain control of the 2Bangkok.com main site.
Some photos of the Friday night rally we were going to post on the main page have been put here: http://www.angkor.com/2bangkok/2bangkok/forum/showthread.php?t=2493

Is the problem with the webhost because of the increased traffic on critical news days? Or because of other unexpected "interference"?
You should look into a back-up site on wordpress or blogspot for temporary posts as the "interference" might not go away quickly.
>Is the problem with the webhost because of the increased traffic on critical news days? Or because of other unexpected "interference"?
Traffic does spike on these days, but I don't think that is it. And I don't want to be someone who sees conspiracy at every turn... The problem actually started Friday morning, but I had some access in the evening before it went off again. Right now I have been locked out of the site for 17 hours (so far) because of a "server problem."

Good idea. I am looking into this now...
19:23 on Saturday - we have control of the site again!

In the last 24 hrs the post count has gone over 15 000 which means that the last 3000 posts were done in the last 7 months. Seems to be a slight increase in daily posts?
Member count is slowly, slowly creeping towards 1000 (now at 986) but may still take another two months given that it was about 950 last Nov.
Congratulations to you all; I'm happy that interesting subject are always present among the 2000. I'm reading most of them, but as you know I only can give new info if it belong's to infrastructure, mapping or history of South East Asia in relation to the geography.
On the background I'm preparing railwaymaps of Thailand, with perfect sources from Dr. Wangemann, Khun Wisarut and other's. But please, give me some time, it's a lot of work.

Are there any maps showing the existing BTS/Skytrain with the current 'new' routes overlaid?
The wonderful System Map of Bangkok of several years ago (well done Chatchawat) has the Taksin Election promise lines, most of which have been abandoned.

Did the thread count not just go over 2500 in the last 24 hrs? Wonder who has read all of them?;)
Sorry to have to inform you that I've just knocked the thread number back to 2,462, as part of a subject consolidation exercise. Indeed, I may knock it back a few more yet. I seem to remember the excitement over an approaching 1,000 members, which Ron managed to frustrate for a further whole year + by weeding out many 'bot' members.:D

I'm not the expert, but these might explain something:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forum_spam
Spambots
Spambots are automated programs designed to register on forums, disseminate spam, and leave. They usually supply a fake name, freebase email address, and sometimes mask their true IP address. Spammers can set the message that the spambot will post. Most spambots target one specific forum software or hosting company. Spambots are easy to identify by the nature of the message they leave, or the links in the signature. A typical post contains no topical content, but is accompanied by either spam links in the post itself, or in the user's signature. Some spambots will never post, and rely on the links in their signature to increase their search engine visibility. Looking up the spambot's user name with a search engine will often reveal thousands of registrations in unrelated forums.
An example of a spambot which has gained some notoriety since November of 2006 is XRumer. XRumer attempts to bypass anti-spamming mechanisms put in place by forum administrators, with some success. It uses a database of known HTTP proxies to mask the IP address of the poster, making it difficult for administrators to use a naive IP-banning mechanism.
http://spamhuntress.com/2006/05/21/forum-bots-what-are-they-up-to/
Admin weeded out a lot of these, which is why the membership went backwards for a few months. He then created a 'manual' registration system to keep some of them out.
Now - hopefully - the bots are mainly guests. I think they are known as 'crawlers'. A lot of their work is in support of search engines. I note that they home in on certain threads, where there is probably something hidden to assist them in their work.
This thread seems to attract the interest of the 'crawlers' in droves:
http://www.angkor.com/2bangkok/2bangkok/forum/archive/index.php/t-511.html
Now there doesn't seem to be anything in of a suspicious nature, and I suppose you could argue that their interest is beneficial to the site anyway. So, I also suppose it is better NOT to delete it. The interest in this thread reduced for a few months, but it seems to be returning. I often take a look at this:
http://www.angkor.com/2bangkok/2bangkok/forum/online.php
If you click on some of the guest IP addresses, you get information that often makes it plain they are engaged in bot work.
But I'm out of my depth here, so don't trust everything I say on the matter!

The post count just passed 18, 000 which seems to be a large increase in the past year.
On 24/06, it went over 15K so the last 3K posts were done in under 5 months. Hence the last third of all posts (ie. 6000) were done in the last year which indicates an obvious increase in posts which should make sense given the increase in members.
There, that's my late night attempt to explain some figures.....

Well the post count has just passed 20,000 today so I guess that should be considered some sort of achievement for the forum!
