Anyone has a clue why they tore down the Brew Pavilion (Ratchada, near the Chinese Embassy/opposite True Tower and Thai Cultural Centre subway station)??? It was a nicely designed beer garden/music hall style venue, complete with wooden embellishments and landscaped surroundings, a little bit up-market. Apparently rather new, or in excellent condition, and, as far as I know, quite popular with the locals. (I met with some Thai friends there earlier this year.)

Some weeks ago, when passing in a taxi, I noticed a wrecking crew reducing it to a pile of rubble.

Now all that is left is a large empty lot.

Sidenote:

Why in Bangkok they always seem to destroy only the beautiful buildings and let the ugly ones stand, or replace them with new eyesores? (See Siam Interconti, or the recent threat to Soi Luenrit.)

Usually, in Thailand, next to nothing is done for building maintenance, which results in all those derelict structures, posing dangers to bypassers. Or when do you actually see one of those grimy, crumbling concrete shophouses being renovated (though it does happen)? On the other hand, every so often, structures that are beautiful or at least still usable/habitable are demolished and no effort is made to preserve them..... and sometimes for what? I remember some months ago Ron posted a photo on the main page of the old villa at the corners of Si Ayutthaya and Phaya Thai Rds being torn down - now it is still there, they didn't finish the job, just dismantled the roof and presumably the interior. What a pity.

Yes, that site has a new nightclub/restaurant built on it about every six months (alternating between a building at the back of the property and the side). Even in Bangkok's frentic nightclub scene the changes on the site are unsually quick.
I think another shopping center is eventually palnned there...
