It isn't every day of the week you see 50 heavily-laden horses on the main North-South highway. I imagine quite a few people would be interested in capturing this. No itinerary as yet:

Caravan Of 50 Horses To Ferry Tea Leaves From China To KL

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) -- In yet another event to add to the festivities of the 50th National Day celebrations, a caravan of 50 horses will cart 50 tonnes of tea leaves overland from Yunnan, China, to Terengganu and make its way to Kuala Lumpur.

The two-month journey, which will pass through several Asean countries, begins in September and is scheduled to reach the capital in November, said organising committee chairman Datuk Abdul Aziz Singah.

"In the old days, horses were used to carry tea leaves overland to every nook and corner in China and we hope to relive the history," he told a press conference here today.

Dubbed as the Tea and Horse Caravan Road, the event is organised by Tea & Horse Caravan Sdn Bhd with the cooperation of the Palace of the Golden Horses Hotel. The 50 horses in the caravan represent the 50 years of Malaysia's independence.

Called "ChamaXindao" in Mandarin, the event, which symbolises the economic relations between Malaysia and China, would also herald Visit Malaysia Year 2007 and Visit Terengganu Year 2008.

He said Malaysian traditional performances, tourism products and handicraft would be shown to the public at various places where the caravan breaks journey.

Abdul Aziz said that after passing through Yunnan, the caravan would break journey in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand before heading to Terengganu and later to Kuala Lumpur.

"In Terengganu, we hope to declare Kuala Terengganu a twin city of Kunming in China to enable the rich cultures of both places to flourish," he said.

He said diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China have grown stronger since 1974 when Malaysia's second prime minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, visited Beijing to establish the ties.

Don't worry! It's only tea! And probably the Chinese want the Malaysians to believe they're getting a tonne per saddlebag.

I can't really imagine a traditional Chinese tea caravan on the Laos border using waggons somehow. Also, are we talking mules or ponies? I believe Jin Haw use ponies for their 'tea' caravans. :D
