I was pick-pocketed last night on Silom Road by the junction of Silom Road and Convent. I was walking through the food stalls when it suddenly got very congested with people from both directions and then cleared again. Seconds after, as I was crossing Convent on the way to the BTS I realised the sealed pocket I'd had my wallet in was empty. I quickly went back but none of the stall owners had seen a thing and there wasn't a copper in sight.
I'd recognise one of the flash mob - but I can't see what good that is at the moment.

I managed to cancel all my cards and lost minimal cash but it was fairly inconveniencing.

My building manager has been saying to me for the last couple of months to keep an eye on my wallet when I go out. She's never felt the need to say it before at any time in the last 3 or so years that I've known her.

So, is this part an increasing trend or have just been lucky until now?

You are lucky.
Wallets are very rare though.
Usually cellphones are the ones to go first.
My friend was walking through chatuchak with her purse, only to come home to find out that her purse was kinda light. When she looked at it the purse was slit on the back with a big enough hole for almost everything to slip out.

Actually I feel safer in Bangkok then I did back in Los Angeles. Over there they don't bother to slit purses or pick pocket. They just rob you straight forward "Gimme all your money and your car now!"

My tip, don't carry too much cash. I keep my wallet in my front pocket not back.

I keep my wallet in my front pocket not back.
I have had all my trousers made here since the late 1980s and I have my tailor insert an internal pocket inside my trousers: it is only accessibly from the top (the belt rim) but stores my money, cards etc.
