Nice picture here of Khlong Ngae Station & a ticket to go. Sorry I can't link directly,so you'll have to endure the blog. You'll have to scroll about 70%:-

I was always under the impression that Khlong Ngae wasn't really a functioning passenger station; and that the staff were occupied with freight & signalling duties only. And that the International Express just stopped there to let freights run past. A recent post by Khun Wisarut got me wondering, when he described it as the only active station between Hat-Yai and Padang Besar. It seems you can board the International Express there, but I'm still not sure if you can also board the KTM sleeper to KL in the afternoon.

This station view is looking south from the level-crossing for the main drag to Malaysia. The bridge demolished by Indian sappers probably lies about a kilometer further south. Expedition coming up when work schedules allow!

Well, as Ihave said before, ONLY International Express 35/36 has
made a stop at Klogn Ngae. Langawi Express would NOT make
a stop at Klong Ngae ... justg go straight from Padang besar to Hat Yai

Royal Thai Survey maps (even 1:50,000) do not indicate all the stations or halts. Added to which are widespread inaccuracies and very dated surveys. And many 50,000 maps are unavailable to Joe Public (Thai or Farang) for very (lame) security reasons; especially in the south.

You might want to procure a Thai language timetable which will show more stops & more local trains. They certainly won't show all the stops & halts either. And then get your 'pardner' to read it for you. Even a fairly scanty knowledge of Thai characters will help you to read such timetables.

Some stations have a complete list of stations and fees for the whole system (probably long out-of-date) in Thai & English if you have a good look around the Ticket Counter & Advance Booking areas.

However, I think Khun Wisaruth might be telling us that these Thai Language timetables have deliberately been withdrawn on the Southern Route for security reasons.

Hua Hin, Prachuap Khirikhan - Three train workers were killed and over 50 passengers were injured when a passenger train rammed into another in this seaside town early Sunday morning.

The accident happened at 3 am at the Nongkae railway station in Hua Hin district.

Police said the Bangkok-Yala train was being parked at the station to wait for the Langsuan-Thonburi train to pass through the station first, but the coming train was directed into a wrong track and rammed into the Bangkok-Yala train.

The engine and three passenger carriages of the Bangkok-Yala were thrown out of the track by the impact, which also cause the front part of the Langsuan-Thonburi train to derail at well.

The driver and a female worker of the Bangkok-Yala train were found dead inside a carriage.

A male worker of the Bangkok-Yala train died on his way to a hospital.

Some 50 injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals.

The remaining passengers were taken to a bus station to continue their travel.

The accident disrupted the southern train service.

Wow, I just left Bangkok two days ago thinking that it has really not a good start to the year in Thailand.

BBC is now reporting 73 injured. Where is Nongkae exactly from Hua Hin? Tiredness/exhaustion would seem to be an obvious possible factor given the time that it occured?

Off hand, I believe it is one stop North or South of Hua-Hin; and I currently favor South. I'll look it up when I get home from work. A bit more detail here: -

MAJOR TRAIN ACCIDENT
3 killed, 73 injured in train crash

Hua Hin, Prachuap Khirikhan - Three train workers were killed and 73 other people were injured when a passenger train rammed into another in this seaside town early Sunday morning.

The State Railway Authority said it has yet to investigate to find out whether the accident at the Nong Kae staton in Hua Hin district was caused by the system or human error.

Police and railway officials said the Bangkok-Yala train was being parked at the station to wait for the Langsuan-Thonburi train to pass through the station first, but the incoming train did not enter the alternative track. Instead, it rammed into the Bangkok-Yala train.

The impact reduced the engine of the Bangkok-Yala train into rubble, pushed it back to crash into the first passenger carriage. Three passenger carriages were also derailed by the impact.

Siva Saengmanee, chairman of the SRT board of directors, said the accident took place at 2:30 am. The cause of the accident has yet to be investigated, he said.

He said a total of 73 were injured and most of them slightly. He said 65 passengers were discharged after receiving treatments at hospitals.

He said eight people were severely injured and three of them were SRT employees.

Five of the eight severely injured were being treated at the Hua Hin Hospital, and three in San Paolo Hospital.

The three slain train workers were on the Bangkok-Yala train. They were identified as Phaichit Chuyod, the driver, Wanida Photihpan, a train attendant, and Thirapong Boonchai, a mechanic.

Other passengers were provided a temporary shelter before were transported to a nearby bus station to continue their travel on buses.

Channel 7 reported quoting an official as saying that the driver of the Langsuan-Thonburi train might be responsible for the accident because the station already flashed the red light for him to stop pending the switching of track for his train.

The accident disrupted train service until 7 am.

Siva said six Bangkok-bound trains from southern provinces resumed their travel to Bangkok at 7 am.

Including this rather strange paragraph right at the end. I somehow doubt the guv' was there to witness the crash, and if he has never 'heard of' two trains colliding (in Thailand or elsewhere) he can't be the sort of politician who takes much notice of the news  Presumably, the reporter meant to quote the governor as saying that his province as not previously witnessed the collision of two trains. I'm in no position to say whether that is correct, but I do note that the Hua-Hin area has more than its fair share of truck-train collisions on level crossings : -

Prachuap Khiri Khan Governor Prasong Pitoonkijja said he never saw two trains colliding before.

MAJOR TRAIN ACCIDENT
3 killed, over 100 injured in train crash

Prachuap Khiri Khan - Two trains crashed at the Nong Kae station in Hua Hin district early Sunday, killing three people and injuring more than 100 other passengers.

As of press time, eight victims including a seven-year-old girl and a monk remained hospitalised.

Screams rang across the accident scene immediately after a Thon Buri-bound train crashed head-on to a Yala-bound train on a diversion track at 2.42 am. Five train compartments were derailed, as passengers woke up to the nightmare scene in the middle of the night.

"I was sleeping when I heard an extremely loud bang. When I opened my eyes, things were scattered all around and people were screaming. I tried to look out of the train window but it's so dark outside," Anas Yodkham, a 59-year-old passenger, said.

He later managed to get out of his compartment with minor injuries.

"It's my luck that I have survived," Anas said, after seeing the battered compartments from outside.

Paijit Chuyod, driver of the Yalabound train, was found dead inside his locomotive compartment.

Train hostess Wanida Phokhan, an employee of JM Food Industry Co Ltd, died shortly after she was retrieved from the debris.

Train technician Theerapon Boonchai was conscious throughout nearly four hours when rescue workers tried to help him out of the battered compartment. However, he too later succumbed to serious injuries. Paijit and Theerapon were employees of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT).

Medical professionals and rescue workers from various units rushed to help the victims at the accident scene.

Siva Saengmanee, the chairman of SRT board, said the accident caused between Bt150million and Bt200million in damage.

According to him, primary investigation suggested that the Thon Buri-bound diesel railcar ran against the light and thus hit the Yala-bound train that was on the diversion route. A fact-finding committee was now established to carefully look into the case and determine the cause of the accident.

By 7.10 am Sunday, SRT removed all debris from the affected railway and train services were now available as usual.

Public Health Ministry's spokesman Dr Suphan Srithamma said the train crash injured more than 100 people but most of them received only minor injuries such as bruises.

"The hospitalised victims are also out of danger now," he said.

Prachuap Khiri Khan Governor Prasong Pitoonkijja said he never saw two trains colliding before.

So it does seem that driver fatigue played a major role however more concerning is the information that only 35% of the 212 automatic stop devices installed in locos work!!!

This effectively means that with all the old (this is the inference in the article) overworked drivers, due to staffing shortages, driving trains there appears to be a fair possibility of similar events occuring! And in the lack of an appropiate level of maintainence....

Anywhere else after an article such a this being published and the leadership of the state railways would be going into major damage control and implementing urgent remedy strategies.

Train driver probably fell asleep, says SRT AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK BKK Post 16/01/07
A train driver probably fell asleep and caused Sunday's crash which killed three people and injured 93 others in Prachuap Khiri Khan's Hua Hin district, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT)'s preliminary investigation has found.
There was also a good chance that the automatic system which should stop the train if the driver does not respond to the controls was not working, SRT chairman Siva Saengmanee said yesterday. The driver of the north-bound Chumphon-Thon Buri rapid train probably fell asleep and his train ploughed head-on into the Bangkok-Yala sprinter at Nong Kae station, he said. The crash happened at 2.42am when the sprinter was waiting for the Chumphon train to pass so it could continue south.

Three railway employees on the sprinter, including the driver, died at the scene. Ninety-three passengers were taken to hospital in Hua Hin. Most were allowed to go home later on Sunday. Mr Siva said the SRT would check the vigilance system of the Thon Buri-bound train to see whether it was operational when the accident took place. The vigilance system is set to lock the brakes automatically within 102 seconds if the driver does not respond to the train's controls or becomes incapacitated. The system had been installed in 212 locomotives to prevent drivers from falling asleep at the controls, but only 35% of the devices were operative, said Mr Siva. He conceded that most rail tracks and locomotives were also old and needed repair. "The SRT needs to speed up the repair of those devices," the SRT chief said. "But the problem is that the agency is short of funds to cover repair and maintenance costs due to its huge debts."

The agency was understaffed, and particularly short of train drivers. Mr Siva said 2,400 drivers were needed, but the SRT had only 2,000 drivers and most of them were almost 50 years old.The SRT budgeted 400 to 500 million baht for maintenance each year. This was inadequate, resulting in frequent train accidents, he said. The agency needed 21 billion baht to repair 813km of old and damaged track. The SRT earned about four billion baht a year from passenger train services, two billion baht from freight and another two billion baht from land rental fees, but its spending stood at 14 to 15 billion baht a year, the SRT chairman said.

Compare the differing accounts in these two reports. From the second report, I believe that the Langsuan to Thonburi train is an ORDINARY. I think I'm also right in saying that 42 Yala to Bangkok is neither strictly speaking a RAPID or an EXPRESS, but an EXPRESS DIESEL RAILCAR:

Train derails near Hua Hin, no injuries

(BangkokPost.com) - A rapid train travelling from Yala to Bangkok derailed as it was approaching a station in Prachuap Khiri Khan province early Thursday.

There was no report of injuries but all southbound trains were halted.

Police said the accident took place at around 2 a.m. when the last car derailed as the train was passing another going in the opposite direction at Sam Roi Yot station.

A spokesperson of the State Railway of Thailand said it had sent a new train to pick up passengers from to Hua Lamphong station in Bangkok.

It was expected that the car would be put back on the tracks and the train could resume operations in the afternoon.

Don't know if I'm right in this, but it seems to me that SRT should concentrate on doubling it's existing busy mainlines before its builds any new ones. Given that the most profitable future (and present) part of its business will be (and is) freight, it really needs to double the entire line to Padang Besar to help deal with these inevitable SNAFUs as quickly as possible. This is especially urgent when one considers that Malaysia has just given the go ahead to the doubling and electrification of its line from Ipoh to Padang Besar. Plus further doubling South of KL on the Singapore route.

State Railway extra cautious due to flooding along northern and southern rail route
The State Railway of Thailand is exercising extra caution around the southern and northern rail lines due to heavy rainfall and flooding at some rail segments.

The Public Relations Division Director of the State Railway of Thailand, Ms. Monthakarn Sriwilas (มณฑกาญจน์ ศรีวิลาศ), reported that a derailment of the 178th Express train from Lang Suan to Thonburi (หลังสวน-ธนบุรี ) occurred in Bang Saphan Noi (บางสะพานน้อย) district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province earlier this morning. No injuries were sustained and the track has been repaired and reopened for operations. A State Railway Committee is currently investigating the incident.

State Railway officials are currently monitoring the northern and southern rail route which are experiencing heavy rain. Flood inundation have been found at key rail segments accounting for delays and operation suspensions in many provinces, including Nakhon Si Thammarat and Pitsanulok.

Jazz Train Announces Last Trip of the Season

"It's been an amazing experience starting up the Jazz Train," says founder Rewat Siriwong na Ayutthaya (Mr. Ray). "We've learned a lot about organizing and producing a venture such as this. But more than that, we made so many new friends and we found out just how many folks love good music and are seeking experiences such as ours."

"There are a lot of ordinary sight-seeing tours out there. We offer something truly different, and people have responded to that."

The Jazz Train excursion package is notable for its musical theme, for the sheer amount of live entertainment, and for the innovative ways it is presented.

"We start the music at the station, continuing on the train all the way to our destination at Baan Krut. After a break to rest and relax, we have cocktails and dinner on the beach along with light, tranquil jazz and other styles. Then we really kick out the jams in our evening concert, featuring at least two, sometimes three, complete bands."

"We continue the following day with breakfast, local sightseeing, and more live music. Finally, we bring everyone back by air-conditioned coach, arriving at Hua Hin in the afternoon. Altogether, it's several hours of quality live music. You just can't get that with any other excursion package."

"Naturally, we plan to build on our success of this season. Our idea is a simple one. We take people places they've never been, in ways they've never traveled, and surround them with quality live entertainment and warm hospitality all the way there and back. With that in mind, we'll be coming up with some genuinely exciting options for the 2008-2009 season. Watch this space!"

A ticket for the March 15-16 Jazz Train excursion includes all transportation and shuttles, beachside lodging, meals and snacks, and all musical entertainment. The all-inclusive price is 3,200 baht per person, double occupancy. Tickets can be reserved by calling Mr Ray at 081 880 4211 or 089 181 6328, or by visiting the Jazz Train web site at www.huahinjazztrain.com .

Channel 5 TV just reported that the Sungai Golok to Phattalung Train derailed at Ban Din Lan Station about 10 Kms. North of Hat-Yai Junction this evening. So far I only know that about 20 people were injured.

A very brief report on TPBS showed carriages jack-knifed on an embankment. It also showed what appeared to be a completely burned-out locomotive. But it was too brief to get a good impression. So perhaps pretty serious! There was also footage of people in hospital, but no mention of any deaths. The carriages appeared to have come to come to rest in a more-or-less vertical position.

Reports say it was the last train heading North out of Hat-Yai for the day. It appeared to be an 'Ordinary' train.

The train services from the deep South are expected to resume Sunday evening after a train derailment in Songkhla Saturday evening caused the services to be suspended.

At 11:30 am Sunday, Thanongsak Pongprasert, director of the southern office of the State Railway Authority, said the services from three southern border provinces are expected to resume at 4 pm.

The five-car Sungai Kolok - Phattalung train derailed between Hat Yai and Lan Din stations in Songkhla Saturday, injuring 29 passengers.

Officials were trying to remove the derailed train and repair the part of the tracks.

He said if the works could not be finished in time, passengers form the three southern border provinces would be transported from the Hat Yai station to catch other trains at the Nakhon Si Thammarat station.

Fatal derailment

One passenger died and 13 others were injured and hospitalised when four passenger carriages of a train ran off the rails in southern Songkhla province, raising suspicions that militants may have torn up the tracks.

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said Sunday morning that the cause of the accident was not yet determined. Normal service was to be restored Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred on Saturday evening, when a train enroute to Sungai Kolok on the Malaysian border derailed near a village railway station in Songkhla province, officials said.

Fourteen injured passengers were sent to a hospital in Hat Yai city. One man died shortly after admission, of multiple abdomen injuries, officials said.

An expectant mother travelling as well gave birth at the hospital, they said. Both mother and her newborn child were in safe condition.

The accident raised suspicions that southern militants had torn up the rails, as they have done dozens of times in the past. Railway experts were investigating the accident on Sunday.

Several hundred passengers were stranded at Hat Yai station because the accident preveented at least two trains from continue their journey as crews laboured to repair the tracks and remove the damaged locomotive and four passenger carriages, the SRT spokesmen said. (BangkokPost.com, TNA)

The south side of the bridge over Ror 1 canal. (The 1st Hatyai "Drainage" canal)

This bridge located in the middle of the horizontal curve as well as
in the middle of the vertical curve in the same time.
This situation should be avoided in the road design also the railway design (I guess).
Cars or trains should not change it's position in three dimensions at the same time.

The derailment occured few meters from this point.

Let's see the rail's curvature, the curve is not smooth as it should be.

Bangkok-Hat Yai train derails in Phatthalung

Phatthalung - A Bangkok-Hat Yai train derailed in Phatthalung Friday morning.

Officials said part of the track at the Makok Nua station in Muang district sank as sleepers under it had decayed, causing two cars to derail at about 6:30 am.

No one was injured in the accident, which disrupted the southern train services in the morning. Five trains could not pass the station as scheduled.

The derailed train is expected to be put on track and the track is expected to be repaired in the afternoon.

Interesting Google shot here taken during the construction of that bridge (in the quoted post) over the flood alleviation canal. Note the temporary line built slightly to the left of the existing line to allow construction of a new bridge. The image comes from a site run by Khun Rodfaithai who posted the bridge pics in the quoted post. (Note that the construction of the new bridge included a wide abutment to allow for a double track bridge in future.):
