have you tried the google earth application?

it has alot more high resolution images then they got on the web including alot more of Bangkok. it was a good tool to learn where everything realy is istead of just thinking that you know where you are all the time :)

yes the Google Earth is a quantum leap on Google Maps

Quicker and heaps more functions and optional features

Like the grid overlay - very handy when using conventional maps.
Also the rivers and roads overlay is very useful when these details
don't show clearly on the images.

Be sure to download the regular updates [help menu at top]

Word of warning: be careful - it's addictive :)

Thought about upgrading to Earth Plus but will wait till more high resolution coverage is available.

I could've sworn there was some discussion about this earlier here, but I can't find it so here goes again --

Is there any way to choose an alternate data set for Google Maps or Earth? For example, if you punch in Singapore to either, great big chunks of the Central Business District are covered by cloud. I'd be happy to use older data if it actually showed what's underneath...

For any deadline the authorities announce add two months... and then there is bigger chance it won't happen at all. Officials announce programs and plans without any funding or approval. This is done to begin to generate public awareness and approval of the project. The press just reports "this will happen." I'm not sure of the details of the map program, but I'll believe it when I see it...

well, i did say that it might attract the attention of terrorists who only think of promoting their cause and not world peace

As mentioned on the front page:

http://www.thaigoogleearth.com/

Not really sure what it's all about; but the site provides .kmz files (Google earth overlays) for download. Maybe something like a 'Google Earth Community' site for Thailand.

E.g. clicking "download thai map" on the left will bring you to a selection page with

provinces and districts
golf courses
roads and bridges
nature, oceans, forests, mountains, waterfalls
temples
etc. etc.

The province/district page (here (http://www.thaigoogleearth.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=0&func=select&id=4)) has tons of overlays for all of Thailand as well as for single provinces.

Try the file described as "English alphabet sorting 798 Ampers / 50 Khets / 79 Pre_Ampers" (currently fifth from the top). It includes different point markers (no boundaries though!) for all the administrative divisions from changwat to amphoe, king amphoe and khet (Bangkok).

The direct link (http://www.thaigoogleearth.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=0&func=download&id=547&chk=c35e02a36f10114c18d2cd4bdfa87f7d) to the file might also work. The difference to this one (http://www.thaigoogleearth.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=0&func=download&id=537&chk=5e10cc877e5e08c858537d65da496a66) is that the first is sorted alphabetically by districts - the second by provinces, then districts. Pretty neat if you want to find the location of something.

Maybe this is the one I have been looking for, a reported new service. Am I missing an English version??

Seems like it's only the software which is updated. New high-res image data would have become visible in the older version as well, and the new standard layers (Panoramino photos and Wikipedia articles) have become active in my older GE client before already. And now there had been a first update of these two layers, so now several of my photos are now visible in GE, and I also made sure more Wikipedia article have a geocoding...

Yes it's actually the Beta 4 version which has been trialling for a while and as of 8th January is the "new" version, called Google Earth 4

More details http://earth.google.com/earth4.html

Spent a few hours with it this evening and it seems pretty good - plenty to play with:)

There are some new areas of Thailand covered now, in case you wait for some place to get displayed in hires it's worth to look again now. But still loads of interesting places without hires coverage, I have listed a few in my blog (http://tambon.blogspot.com/2007/12/new-satellite-images-in-google-earth.html).

See also the original announcement in the official Google Earth blog (http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2007/12/where-in-world-is.html). You have to use Google Earth to see the new areas, Google maps did not pick these updates yet. And no need for an update of the Google Earth software...

google earth has recently added some new areas in Thailand,
Yes, there was a big update this week, however several areas you listed were available in hires for several months already, e.g. Kuiburi or Ko Lanta. You have missed Cha-Am however, Wiang Sa (Surat Thani), Chumphon and Pathio. I have reported the last three GE imaginary updates in my blog, see http://tambon.blogspot.com/search/label/Geotagging

The easiest way to confirm a data update is recent is to browse the same area in Google Maps, which gets the new data a bit later.

Just noticed there has been another data update today or yesterday. I haven't yet started to compile the list of places covered this time, but especially in Surat Thani province there are a lot of new tiles in hire now. I'll post the list of places in my blog and here later.

Strangely this time Google Maps catched the new data directly, so it is not possible to confirm something is new in GE by looking into GM. So I can only list those places where I am certain that they are new:

- several areas in Surat Thani, e.g. Don Sak (sadly the town is under clouds), Chaiya and Tha Chana, but not the interesting part with the towns Talad Chaiya and Phumriang, Ban Na San and Vibhavadi
- Sawi, Chumphon
- the area between Samut Songkhram and Ratchaburi, including Damnoen Saduak
- Sangkhlaburi, Kanchanaburi, including a big part of the Khao Laem lake
- Mae Fa Luang, Chiang Rai
- Wiang Kao, Khon Kaen
