They have been promoting the Paknam Tower for over two years now. It would seem that it was delayed for political reasons. However, finally on Friday 18th May 2007 at 2.19 p.m., a Brahmin ceremony was held for the laying of the foundation stone. I have written a report about this at thai-blogs.com (http://www.thai-blogs.com/index.php?blog=5&title=foundation_stone_ceremony&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1). I would be interested if any members can add more details to this ceremony.

This is what the 139 metre high tower will look like once it is finished. Itis definitely going to dominate the landscape as there are no high-raisers in Paknam City. On a clear day, the views from the top should be spectacular. You will be able to see into Bangkok to the north and the Gulf of Thailand to the south.

The Paknam Tower is being built on the site of the old Paknam Prison. This was demolished about four or five years ago. Only the watch towers are remaining and I believe some of these will be kept as a feature in the surrounding park. Over at our Thai prison blogs (http://www.thaiprisonlife.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=95&Itemid=90), you can see some more background information, including satellite pictures, for this location.

I will post more pictures here as and when things progress.

Sorry Richard, cannot find Paknam prison on a map. Is it close to the City Pillar?

The new Paknam Prison is 30 kms further down Sukhumwit Road towards the Klong Dan community. The Paknam Tower will be built on the site of the old Paknam Prison which is close to Paknam city center. You can see it clearly marked on the above map I did for paknam.com (http://www.paknam.com). Bangkok and north is to the left.

I was speaking to a local historian this morning and he reckons that the foundation laying ceremony was politically motivated for the upcoming elections. He says it doesn't necessarily indicate the commencement of building work.

What a surprise.

Thanks for the image and location.
