Here's my bit o' useless information for the day. (We all love trivia, don't we?)

Just returned from a drive upcountry over the long weekend and came up with this little list after passing so many gas stations:

Jet - Jiffy
Esso - Tigermart
Shell - Star Mart
Petronas - Suria
Bai Chak - Lemon Green

Most PTT stations seem to have a 7-Eleven attached, but that doesn't count......

Anyone can contribute more?

Bang Chak Petroleum rather than Bai Chak

Star Mart belongs to Cal Tex, not Shell!

Esso's Tiger Marts are now slowly replaced by Tesco Lotus Express shops.

PTT is tied with 7-Eleven.

Bang Chak (literallly "Nipa palm village") has two brands of its minimarts: Lemon Green and Bai Chak (literally "Nipa palm leave")

Conoco is about to make a deal selling Jet gas stations in Thailand to either PTT or Shell. I'm not sure if the new owner will keep the name Jiffy for its minimarts. There is a rumor that if Shell is to be the new owner, Big C will be the partner minimart operator; otherwise, 7-Eleven might be in.

I think Shell's stores are named "Select"?

I personally prefer the Jiffy shops. As I feel they have the best selection. Would be a shame if they went :(

I recently received a draft program for a conference on “Sufficiency Economy and Global Transformation: Carving Out a Realistic Path Towards Economic Change” to be held at Chulalongkorn University on 20-21 April. I was interested in the number of “co-organizers and partners” who featured on the program. They are:

Schweisfurth Foundation (Germany) and Sathirakoses Nagapradipa Foundation (Thailand) with Social Research Institute, Chulalongkorn University; Bangchak Petroleum PLC; Social Venture Network Asia (Thailand); Suan Nguen Mee Ma Co., Ltd.; Public Policy Development Office (PPDO); Heinrich Boell Foundation.

I am not sure how Bangchak Petroleum fits in with all this (any ideas?) but they are certainly keen supporters of the royalist sufficiency vision:

With its continuous work developing a good quality of life for Thai society, Bangchak embraces the philosophy of a sufficiency economy, in accordance with the suggestions of His Majesty the King. This philosophy directs our operations; for example, we have acted in conjunction with Mongkol Chaipattana Co., Ltd., in the establishment of Lemon Farm shops, which sell natural agricultural products from rural community organizations, providing health benefits to consumers, as well… Furthermore, Bangchak has assisted in the promotion of guidelines for a sufficiency economy to help communities become self-sufficient and encourage the use of Thai products, in order to save foreign currency. We have encouraged communities to sell their products at shops in our service stations, an additional useful service for Bangchak’s customers.

I am not suggesting anything untoward in this sufficiency network. But I do wonder how useful the sufficiency seminar will be when most of the key participants seem to be singing from much the same song book. University sponsored events should be prompting critical and diverse perspectives. This looks more like a love-in.

PTT to acquire Conoco's 147 Jet petrol stations

PTT Plc to sign agreement on Thursday with ConocoPhillips (COP) to buy the U.S. firm's petrol service stations in Thailand, PTT said Wednesday.

PTT is expected to pay over US$200 million for Conoco Phillips' 147 gasoline service stations in Thailand under the "Jet" brand name.

PTT is largest local oil company with 1,200 petrol service stations nationwide and a 30 percent market share.

Somehow I missed this thread - weird as it is so close to my heart. Gas station convenience stores (known in the trade as G-Stores) was my business for the latter end of my career - I opened over 200 G-Stores across seven countries!

The brands are:
Bang Chak - Lemon Green, Lemon Farm and Bai Chak
Chevron (locally trading as Caltex) - Star Mart
Esso - Tiger Mart - the trial of Tesco Express has ceased and they are being withdrawn slowly I am told
IRPC (TPI) - TPI Mart
Jet - Jiffy [only country it uses this name, do not know why!]
Petronas - Seria
PTT - was using AmPm, now leases out to 7-Eleven
Shell - Select
Thai Oil (PTT) - Rhino Mart

Uniquely, Jiffy was the only coco brand (i.e. company owned and company operated) the rest are franchises.

Sadly they will - PTT has two years to change them over to either 7-Eleven or an 'in-house' brand. The difference is that as Jiffy are company operated not franchised, PTT may thus try to run them as their own brand.

Either way, come 2009, Jiffy is not more.

How about other Thai (petrol station) brands, apart from PTT, Bang Chak and TPI? I recall:

*SUSCO
*Pure
*PT (seen along the highway between Khorat and Khon Kaen, maybe just local)

Who do they belong to?

And by the way - anyone ever seen a self-service gas station in Thailand? Or do they simply not exist?

The only other Thai brands I can recall are Cosmo, MP, RPC, PC, SP and ST but there are some 13,508 unbranded (or provincially branded) stations amongst Thailand's 18,407 service stations.

There were some once: In 1998 many MOPC trialled self-service offering 30 satang off a lite or something but they failed miserably.

'scuse me - Cambodia has convenience stores?

Talking about Cambodia, the coolest gas station I have seen was in the floating village on Tonle Sap near Siem Reap. Some barrels on a large raft (if I remember correctly); serving boats, not cars. It was Caltex - or at least they had an old sign saying so.

Caltex opened two and Shell opened one pre-1997 but then Shell's was destroyed by riots and not rebuilt. I do not recall if the Star marts are still open.

*Petro Asia
*CPF

What's more -

* Cosmo does have a convenience store brand: the fabulous Cosmo Mart! (Certainly not a common sight.)
* TPI (sometimes) also seems to have some sort of shop attached, though very lackluster and apparently without name (their stations all look old and run-down, anyway)
* In the case of PTT, we forgot to mention the Amazon Cafe coffee shop brand that has been popping up lately in many locations (excellent Ice Latte, by the way!). Furthermore, I have seen Book Smile (always strikes me as an extraordinarily stupid name...) stores at some of their stations - strange world we live in, book stores at gas stations, I wonder what's next......
