Bangkok excavates 93 canals to honor HM the King

The Bangkok governor is cooperating with the military in excavating 93 canals in the capital, in an effort to clear the waterways in conjunction with the celebrations on the 80th birthday of His Majesty the King this year.

Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has 1,165 canals under its responsibility and its has found that the water in most of them are polluted because of trash and drained water. Thus the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is cooperating with soldiers from the Supreme Command Headquarters in excavating 93 canals. 55 of these canals are located in the eastern part of the metropolis and 38 are located in other regions. The excavation is aimed at reducing the problem of spoiled water and mitigating floods in Bangkok.

Furthermore Mr. Apirak said he has issued an order to every district office to have them persuade those living around waterways as well as students and private companies to join in the effort on March 22 at Bangkok City Hall, to honor the 80th birthday of His Majesty the King.

Nothing like a new found discovery:rolleyes:
Poor BMA, as fast as they dredge and clean the klongs they soon again fill up with tons of foul smelling junk.

Are the prisoners still cleaning the sewer drains around town?
Was a common sight back in the seventies. Prisoners had a day out of gaol, clad only in shorts down the sewers hauling out buckets of slush to be carted away in trucks (then probably dumped in another klong:rolleyes: )
Presume they were low risk prisoners as I don't recall the guards being armed. Often wondered how many of the prisoners took advantage of their day out and "fled the scene"
