Everyone who's interested -

For a list of (heavy rail) mass transit systems of the world, see the ever-growing (and improving, and more and more useful, and interesting and astonishing) Wikipedia web-encyclopedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_metro_systems

Under 'Bangkok' (Skytrain/Subway) in the table, it also links back to 2Bangkok.com........

I just wonder why don't you include those lists from Urban rail (http://www.urbanrail.net)

That's also a very good link, of course!

What I forgot to say: The Wikipedia page has some top ten lists at the bottom, which I pasted here.

Just imagine that, 3.2 billion (!) passengers per year in Moscow, that makes a whopping 8.77 million per day! (In other words, the entire population of the city takes one subway ride every day, on average.) In comparison to the figures below, if we want to estimate, let's say, 300,000 (Skytrain) + 250,000 (Subway) for Bangkok per day, that's a comparatively meagre 200 million per year at current. Network extensions, please......... :D

Top 10 in terms of annual passenger rides

Moscow 3.2 billion
Tokyo 2.7 billion
Seoul 1.6 billion
Mexico City 1.3 billion
New York City 1.3 billion
Paris 1.2 billion
Osaka 957 million
London 886 million (4.6 billion miles)
Hong Kong 798 million
St. Petersburg 784 million

Top 10 in terms of number of stations

New York 468
Paris 369
London 275
Tokyo 266 (Eidan 165, TOEI 101)
Seoul 263
Berlin 254
Munich 229
Melbourne 200
Madrid 190
Mexico City 175

Top 10 in terms of length

Munich 527 km (U-Bahn 85 km, S-Bahn 442 km)
Berlin 473 km (U-Bahn 146 km, S-Bahn 327 km)
London 415 km
New York 368 km
Tokyo 290.3 km (Eidan 183.3 km, TOEI 107 km)
Seoul 287 km
Moscow 265.2 km
Madrid 226.5 km
Paris 212.5 km
Mexico City 201.7 km

Earliest lines

1863 London Underground
1875 Istanbul
1892 Chicago
1896 Budapest, Glasgow
1897 Boston
1900 Paris Metro
1900 New York Subway

The whole point of Wikipedia is that it's editable by anybody -- and you can thank me for both the link and the first version of the Bangkok Subway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangkok_Subway) article. :D

The problem when one lists tables of ridership or networks or stations is that one is seldom comparing lychees with lychees!

London may have 275 'Metro' stations but one third are not underground, so are they Metro? In outer lying areas the service is half-hourly or even peak only!

Equally, whilst 90% of NY railway network is deemed 'Metro', in London over 50% of the commuter population are served by rail networks (some with 10' frequencies) that are not regarded as Metro!

ncr suggested that for Bangkok we add BTS to MRTA, so why not in London do we not add the old Network South-East to London underground/Croydon Tramway/Dockland Railway, thus we have a network of over 660 stations, 800km and 1.6 Billion passengers!!

Sadly I doubt there is an easy way to compare!

seems so then. yes, above-ground tracks and stations, etc are considered metro. metro is short word for metropolitan transport i think. subway is a sub classification. sub means under, way is of course. thus, subway is underway, ie underground rail. metro is the general classification.

metropolitan is a city... eg bangkok, kuala lumpur, singapore, new york

Except, sir, that 'Subway' in English is a foot passageway under the ground not a railway!

And, of course, the area defined as 'Metropolitan' changes as the politicals wills. Until 1975 Thonburi was not part of Greater Bangkok thus it was far smaller, same goes for London prior to 1965!

I think, personally, one ought to talk about all commutter rail systems within the defined metropolitan boundary thus for Bangkok that includes SRT Commuter Lines as well as BTS and MRTA!
